Arsene Wenger reached the tremendous milestone of 1,000 matches in charge of Arsenal this weekend, a tally that has only ever been achieved once before- by Manchester United’s legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson. The stats show us that when you compare the two managerial greats, it is Wenger who has the best record during his first 1,000 games. Which in itself is a compliment.
During his 18 year tenure in charge of the North London club he has helped to make some fond memories for both Arsenal fans and football fans worldwide. There was the double winning sides, taking Arsenal to their first ever Champions League final, toppling Alex Ferguson’s dominant United side and of course the invincible side of 2004 that went the entire Premier League season undefeated, stretching their run to 49 games in total.

Crystal Palace are turning to Aston Villa’s Barry Bannan and Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner in order to bolster their squad for this season’s relegation fight, according to Metro.
The Eagles won their first game of the season on Saturday and are looking to keep the feel-good factor at Selhurst Park by signing the two Premier League stars.
The Scot is reportedly at Selhurst Park having a medical and Bendtner was apparently sighted at Palace’s training ground earlier this afternoon.
With Bannan frozen out at Villa Park and Bendtner unwanted at Arsenal, Palace boss Ian Holloway is hoping to lure the pair with promises of first-team football.
Bannan hasn’t played since March and with Arsenal keen to see the back of the Danish striker – they’re reportedly paying £3 million to encourage his departure – Palace look to soon add their 14th and 15th signings of the window.

Manchester United will miss out on summer transfer target Cesc Fabregas after the midfielder committed his future to Barcelona, write the BBC.
United had two bids for the 26-year-old rejected and were thought to be weighing up a third offer, which would have shattered the club’s transfer record of £30.7 million.
But the Premier League champions have had their hopes dashed after the ex-Arsenal skipper revealed he would remain at the Nou Camp this summer.
“Triumphing in Barcelona has been my dream since I was a child,” said Fabregas.

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club are the focal point of most of this summer’s transfer window gossip. They’ve made high profile signings such as Brazilian midfielder Paulinho and Belgian attacker Nacer Chadli, while speculation about Gareth Bale’s future has dominated the headlines for weeks.
However, very little had been discussed in terms of Spurs needing to bolster their defence. That is until yesterday, when Steven Caulker was sold to Cardiff City for an inbound transfer record believed to be in the region of £8 million.
Having released William Gallas in the summer, Spurs look set to be without last season’s most impressive defender Jan Vertonghen on the opening day of the coming season – the Belgian having injured ankle ligaments on the club’s pre-season trip to Hong Kong – while there are still concerns about the long-term fitness of Frenchman Younes Kaboul, who missed all but one game last season with a knee injury.

Manchester United have suffered yet another setback in their pursuits of Cesc Fabregas after Barcelona vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu declared the midfielder isn’t for sale – at any price, according to the BBC.
United have had two bids for the 26-year-old rejected, having made an an opening offer of £25 million on July 15 and an improved £30 million bid earlier this week.
Manager David Moyes said at a press conference in Japan on Thursday that a potential move for Fabregas was “ongoing” with Espn reporting the Scotsman was preparing a Third bid.
However, Bartomeu has told the Premier League champions not to bother, stating:
“United’s interest for Cesc Fabregas is obvious, he’s a great player but it does not bother us.
“It does not matter what they offer us, we are not selling him.”

Manchester United target Cesc Fabregas does not want to leave Barcelona this summer, according to his manager Tito Vilanova.
United made an opening offer of £25 million for the midfielder yesterday but, according to a recent report on the BBC website, the player wants to stay at the Nou Camp.
Vilanova has been quoted today as saying:
“I know he has received offers from other teams. But Cesc has told me he wants to stay here. He has told me it is his dream to stay with Barcelona.”
The former Arsenal captain was tipped for a move away this summer after struggling to nail down a regular starting berth in the starting Barca XI, but Vilanova continued:
“He doesn’t want to go to other teams for money reasons or playing time. He knows there is competition for places here, but his decision is to stay. I am relaxed about the situation.

Tottenham Hotspur’s push for Champions League football will see them overhaul their squad this summer with up to ten players expected to leave, according to the Metro.
Spurs came agonisingly short of qualifying for Europe’s elite competition on the final day of last season, two seasons in a row where they have missed out by just a whisker. To ensure they definitely do qualify next season, Spurs boss Villas-Boas wants a fresh look to his side and that may not involve several current key players as part of a restructuring process.
Former Football Writers’ Association Player Of The Year Scott Parker is thought to be one player set to leave. After a fine year in Harry Redknapp’s final campaign in charge during the 2011-2012 season, the 32 year old struggled for fitness last term and failed to make the same kind of impact he had previous.

Former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has ruled out a return to England and the Premier League, according to the BBC.
The 26-year old, who began his professional career as a Barcelona youth player, re-joined the Catalans in 2011 following eight years in North London.
As part of the deal, the Gunners were given the option of first refusal should the Spanish champions ever sell the player, which has led to speculation the midfielder could be set for a return to England.
Manchester United were also reportedly interested but Fabregas stated:
“I’ve always said that I’m happy at Barca. Whoever says that I’m leaving doesn’t know me and has never spoken with me.
“If someone says I don’t want to play at Barca, it’s completely absurd.”

Tottenham Hotspur welcome Sunderland to White Hart Lane this afternoon for what could be a pivotal game in the race for Champions League football. Spurs currently are fifth, one point behind Arsenal and with an inferior goal difference going into today’s game. Only a victory for Tottenham and Arsenal failing to beat Newcastle will see Andre Villas-Boas achieve his goal of taking Spurs back into Europe’s elite.
Tottenham vs Spurs kicks-off at 4pm and will be screened live on Sky Sports 2 on UK Television. Here’s the team news ahead of the game…
Spurs are still without long-term absentees William Gallas (calf), Younes Kaboul (thigh) and Brazilian midfielder Sandro (knee). Left full-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto could however return after recovering from the knee injury that saw him miss last weekend’s win at Stoke. He has trained with the team ahead of this final day clash and could be declared fit to start.

José Mário dos Santos Mourinho Félix, the man many call The Special One – a manager who has achieved plenty in the sport and is likely to continue his success wherever he decides to go. Although the chances of a return to Chelsea are very probable with Pep Guardiola joining Bayern Munich, Rafael Benitez leaving Chelsea at the end of the season and Real Madrid approaching Carlo Ancelotti this week, it is not set in stone that the Portuguese maestro will be appointed the next Chelsea boss.
One of the main reasons for this is the exact same reason that he left: Roman Abramovich. Mourinho claimed that the Russian billionaire attempted to get in the way and push through deals, with particular attention paid to the William Gallas to Arsenal saga. So, with all of the sackings, appointments and disruptions that have come Chelsea’s way since José left the club...

When these two sides met at White Hart Lane last week, Tottenham’s complacency cost them deeply. A 2-2 draw sees them come in to this match with their place in the Europa League on a knife edge. They will need a stellar showing to seal victory for the first time in six away outings.
Spurs come in to the match off the back of a last-ditch 2-2 home draw with Everton, whilst Basel are fresh from a 1-1 away draw with St. Gallen.

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club have been handed an enormous boost as Younes Kaboul came through an hour unscathed when the Lilywhites’ Under-21 side drew 1-1 with West Ham in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League on Monday night.
The commanding French central defender has been kept out of action since picking up a knee injury at Newcastle on the first game of the season, but looked at ease amongst Tottenham’s young guns. Initially, Kaboul was only expected to be out for four months, but surgery and a prolonged period of rehabilitation has meant that he has actually been out for more than seven.
The sturdy defender’s first spell at Tottenham came in 2007, but he was sold to Portsmouth before being brought back to White Hart Lane by Harry Redknapp in January of 2011. He has since become, undoubtedly, the best defender in the Tottenham squad – being the star defensive performer...

An entertaining match at White Hart Lane produced a poor result for Tottenham Hotspur this Thursday evening.
Spurs kicked things off in this Europa League quarter-final first leg and looked to get forward early on.
In the fourth minute, William Gallas went down under a heavy challenge and looked to be heading off early – the stretcher being brought out. But he managed to get to his feet and walk off before returning to the pitch.
The opening spell of the match was quite dull, with very little happening and most of the play occurring in the midfield.
The first opportunities of the match fell to Basel in the space of a minute around the 10 minute mark. First, Schar tested Friedel from 18 yards, before Streller got on the end of a cross and tested Friedel again from inside the box, until the spell of pressure ended when Salah blasted over from 12 yards.

A quiet and sparsely-filled San Siro played host to a thrilling game of football that saw Spurs progress to the quarter finals of the Europa League by the skin of their teeth.
Inter Milan kicked the match off but a composed start from Tottenham saw them comfortably keeping Inter at bay, whilst also playing some neat passing moves themselves.
However, it was Inter who opened the scoring after 20 minutes. A slick counter-attacking move from the Italians resulted in a totally free Antonio Cassano getting his head to a cross from Rodrigo Palacio, nodding downwards to beat Brad Friedel at his right hand post.
Five minutes later, Cassano returned the favour and played Palacio through on goal. The Argentinian had Friedel beaten again, but his lobbed effort hit the crossbar and bounced over.
The rest of the first half was very tentative from both teams, as neither wanted to concede any more goals,...

Tottenham Hotspur comfortably beat Inter Milan in the first leg of their Europa League tie.
Spurs got things under-way on a chilly night at White Hart Lane and attacked Inter immediately.
Two minutes in, Kyle Walker ran down the right and crossed in to the box. The ball managed to pass both Gylfi Sigurdsson and Gareth Bale without either man getting a touch and Sigurdsson swinging at the air.
Four minutes later, Spurs were in the lead. A throw-in arrived at Sigurdsson’s feet on the left hand side. He crossed it in and Bale jumped, unchallenged, to head the ball in to Handanovic’s bottom left.
After eight minutes, Bale was off down the left wing and cut inside to Jermain Defoe. The diminutive striker cut inside and struck from 18 yards out, but his shot was well saved when he should have done better.

Spurs got the match underway on a massive afternoon for both teams.
A tentative start saw no real openings until the 6th minute when Olivier Giroud was beaten to a cross by Michael Dawson, who headed it out for a corner. Giroud then met the corner with his head again, but headed straight at an alert Hugo Lloris.
This was followed by a short spell of pressure by Arsenal, in which Giroud found himself through on goal after 10 minutes, only for Jan Vertonghen to make a great last ditch challenge to prevent the shot as Spurs struggled to settle.
A minute later, Aaron Ramsey found himself through on goal, but the through ball was too long and Lloris beat him to it.
On 13 minutes, an attempted cross that was heading for goal from young Carl Jenkinson almost caught Lloris off guard, but he was alert again to catch it at his near post.

The teams are out ahead of today’s 12.45 kick off at the Stadium of Light and the big news is that Michael Dawson – who was reportedly on the verge of leaving Spurs in the summer – will replace Jan Vertonghen at the heart of the Tottenham defence to face the Black Cats. William Gallas also makes way for Steven Caulker who will line up with Dawson in a new look defence. The Frenchman isn’t even included in the match day squad.
Sunderland are without Danny Rose, who is still owned by Spurs and thus can’t play, and John O’Shea has shaken off illness to start in his place.
Adam Johnson and James McClean continue on the Sunderland wings, having been told by their manager to go out and try and take the game to the travelling Spurs:
They can be a threat and this is the whole point.

New Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen could make his Tottenham debut today after Younes Kaboul was ruled out of the game with a knee injury. Andre Villas-Boas decided to field William Gallas and Kaboul as his central defensive partnership in last week’s 2-1 defeat against Newcastle at St. James’ Park. Michael Dawson could also be involved after his move to Queens Park Rangers broke down this week, despite the defender holding talks at Loftus Road.

According to Goal.com, Queens Park Rangers are preparing to sign veteran Tottenham Hotspur defender William Gallas on a free transfer.
Qpr boss Mark Hughes has already acquired 34-year-old Ryan Nelson on a free transfer from Spurs and the club are now trying to complete the deal of his former teammate Gallas, also 34.
New Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas will allow Gallas, who is on a £60,000-a-week contract, to leave White Hart Lane on a free after Tottenham completed the deal of Belgian giant Jan Vertonghen and also have Sebastian Bassong and Steven Caulker returning from their loan spells away. Speculation is Caulker will receive more game time next season and he has jumped ahead of the high-earning Gallas and the new Tottenham boss would prefer not to have such an expensive salary drainer on the bench.

West Ham United are preparing to make a move to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s veteran French defender William Gallas, according to The Sun.
Hammer boss Sam Allardyce, as he often did at Bolton, is keen to add some experience to his side and is often prone to a free transfer bargain for a once world class player. Gallas, a two time Premier League winner at Chelsea, is thought to be surplus to requirements at Spurs as they would prefer not to continue paying his high wages and he is likely to move on a free transfer.
Allardyce recently released 34-year-old Stoke defender Abdoualye Faye and is unlikely to make last season’s loan spell for 31-year-old Stoke defender Danny Collins a permanent one and is in the market for a new defender. He is also mulling over making an ambitious offer to Dutch legend Clarence Seedorf, 36, who may want to...

Arsene Wenger’s search for attacking reinforcements continues to gather pace with the news now circulating that Ivory Coast man Salomon Kalou has been in talks with the Arsenal boss. The forward was released by Chelsea this summer following their Champions League triumph in Munich, which means he is available on a free.
However, this “free” status will likely mean Kalou will be seeking a high salary, with the Mirror estimating that figure at £70,000-a-week. This means a number of highly-paid second-string players will have to be moved along in order to make the deal a reality, with Nicklas Bendtner, Carlos Vela, Denilson and Seb Squillaci players cited by the paper, though Park Ju-Young and Marouane Chamakh will likely also be among those told to find new clubs.
Kalou joined Chelsea from Feyenoord in 2006 for approximately £9 million, though he rarely commanded a starting place in the side and found appearances...

Tottenham Hotspur face Fulham in the Premier League today knowing that a victory will mean at least a fourth spot finish and should Arsenal struggle to beat West Brom, they could finish as high as third, guaranteeing them Champions League football for next season.
Here’s the team news ahead of the game which has a 3pm Kick-off time and is not televised live anywhere in the UK.

Tottenham cruised to a 2-0 victory over a lifeless Blackburn side, in a game that was lit up by a sensational second-half free-kick from Kyle Walker, and moves Spurs back into the Champions League places.
It was a particularly insipid performance from Rovers who failed to register a single shot of any kind and now face the possibility of being relegated next Monday when they face Wigan.
Tottenham, on the other hand, dominated from start to finish and having taken the lead through Rafael van der Vaart half-way through the first period there was only ever going to be one outcome to this match.
Aaron Lennon missed a glorious opportunity to put his side 1-0 up within the first 60 seconds of the game but the winger failed to put the ball in the net after superb play by Luka Modric down the left. The Croatian burst through the Blackburn ranks...

Every game seems to be a must-win for Tottenham right now. Going back as far as the last minute loss to Manchester City in January, Harry Redknapp and his men have needed to pick up wins and points. Unfortunately results have not gone Spurs’ way and their season is in danger of imploding.
A game against a team battling relegation would normally be a prime opportunity for Tottenham to get back to winning ways but Qpr are fighting for their lives and at Loftus Road at least they are entering a rich vein of form. The 20th Premier League London derby of the season sees Queens Park Rangers, still on cloud nine after their victory last week against Chelsea (their first against them in 16 years), travel to the 13 mile journey to White Hart Lane to take on in-form Tottenham Hotspur.
Harry Redknapp’s side are on a great unbeaten run of seven games without defeat and are clawing their way back into the thick of the Champions League contention having bounced back superbly from the opening defeats to the two Manchester clubs, and having always been a game behind the rest of the pack after their opening day fixture against Everton was postponned, which always gave them a false impression on way they were in the table.
Although quiet over the summer, Redknapp’s two major signings Scott Parker and Emmanuel Adebayor have been a revelation and they have only dropped two points since their arrival to the first team.
