Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

Our own Tyler Nichols gave the Frankenstein-inspired horror film Birth/Rebirth a 9/10 review after catching a Sundance screening earlier this year (you can read his review Here), and now a wider audience will have the chance to see it when it receives a theatrical release on August 18th. With that date just one month away, a trailer for Birth/Rebirth has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.
Birth/Rebirth is coming to us from IFC Films and Shudder, so we can probably expect to see the movie reach the Shudder streaming service sometime in the near future.
Judy Reyes of Scrubs stars in the film alongside Marin Ireland of The Umbrella Academy and Aj Lister of Challengers. The feature debut of director Laura Moss, who also wrote the screenplay with Brendan J. O’Brien, Birth/Rebirth has the following synopsis: Rose (Marin Ireland) is a pathologist who prefers working with corpses over social interaction.

It’s been over 100 years since Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein was released, so it’s fascinating to see how different storytellers have approached her material to try and add their own clever twists to the timeless story. The latest take on Shelley’s classic novel is from Laura Moss, whose film birth/rebirth examines the themes at play in Shelley’s book but also incorporates an explicitly maternal take on the material, resulting in a haunting, fascinating, and wholly unique tale of biological horror.
In birth/rebirth, we’re introduced to Celie (Judy Reyes), an Ob nurse who specializes in being supportive to expecting mothers and helping them through the pregnancy process. Celie herself is a single mother doing her best to raise her daughter Lila (A.J. Lister) in a loving environment. Out of the blue, Lila contracts and succumbs to a case of bacterial meningitis, leaving her in the...

We’re all aware of the hokey old “the doctor is a woman!” riddle, but what if that doctor were Dr. Frankenstein? Distaff riffs on Mary Shelley’s Og horror novel do exist — schlocky 1971 Italian exploitation flick “Lady Frankenstein,” for one. But given that it’s a story of life-creation, it’s slightly surprising that it’s taken till now for it to be repurposed, however loosely, into a Midnight-Madness-style motherhood fable. Better late than never: Laura Moss’ superbly performed, enjoyably queasy “Birth/Rebirth” proves just how well the classic tale of scientific hubris and the desire to conquer death maps onto a gory maternity morality play, reanimating the truism that there’s little more (un)deadly than a mother’s love.
In a prologue, hospital midwife Celie (Judy Reyes) is assisting at an emergency C-section for a pregnancy gone suddenly, heinously wrong. The baby lives. The mother dies.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (or, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus for purists) has been retold countless times in the 100+ years since its original publication, with many creators sticking to the tried and true formula and a select few opting instead to give the story a new spin. That’s just what screenwriters Laura Moss and Brendan J. O’Brien aim to do in birth/rebirth, a look at the lives of two women in the medical field who come together to defy death after one of them endures an unspeakable tragedy.
After the sudden death of her 6-year-old daughter Lila (A.J. Lister), maternity nurse Celie is overcome with grief until she crosses paths with pathologist Rose (Marin Ireland), a cold, calculated woman who is far more interested in the corpses she examines than the living people in her life. Potential unavoidable spoilers follow.
Ever since Mary Shelley got together with a bunch of poetry nerds one dark and stormy night and penned "Frankenstein," the horror genre has taught us that reanimating the dead is always a bad idea. And yet horror movie characters keep doing it, again and again. When will they learn? Not anytime soon, I suppose, especially not in "Birth/Rebirth," Laura Moss' delightfully twisted horror drama about cheating death. It's dark, even bleak subject matter, and there's an abundance of gore and body horror sprinkled throughout. And yet, the script, penned by Moss and Brendan J. O'Brien, is frequently funny in an extremely macabre way. That deep, dark humor injects life into "Birth/Rebirth" just like a lightning bolt hitting Victor Frankenstein's creature.
That humor is aided by a knock-out performance from Marin Ireland, playing Rrose, an extremely socially awkward pathologist who seems to have never developed anything approaching people skills.

The Sundance Film Festival’s Midnight sidebar launched with a stomach-churning (literally, on-screen for real) meditation on extreme motherhood with the premiere of Birth/Rebirth.
“This is where things get nasty,” said one of the Midnight programmers, Charlie Sextro. No, he was not referring to the man who brought in a rack of BBQ ribs from the grocery store into the screening, although that image does give you insight into the kind of atmosphere one can expect at midnight.
This was the first year the festival kicked off the midnight section at the Rey Theatre, after years of screenings at the Library Theatre. And while some years Midnight movies can be raucous and sweat-inducing affairs, depending on the offering, this opening was shaded with tragic grotesqueness of grounded mad science.

Laura Moss’s birth/rebirth, a Sundance premiere, is unexpectedly funny for a movie in which the body of a dead child is reanimated by a somewhat spooky morgue technician. That may be because most of the horrors of this movie are drawn from everyday. For a morgue technician or, say, a nurse, even the freakiest medical procedures or biological traumas have a whiff of the routine about them. Even under the most dire circumstances, as in the case of a dead child. There’s nothing unusual about an amniocentesis...

“Purpose is a moving target,” Dr. Rose Casper (Marin Ireland) flatly declares towards the end of Laura Moss’ “birth/rebirth.” The Bronx pathologist is talking about her goals for the six-year-old girl she’s just Frankensteined back from the dead in the bedroom of her Co-op City apartment, and yet by that point in this thoughtful but wildly miscalculated Mary Shelley riff it’s already been well-established that Rose is also talking about her own unique sense of womanhood.
The inexpressive mad scientist has always felt at odds with the biological processes that supposedly define her body, and now she rebels against them by creating life with her mind; a rebellion that finds her masturbating random men in bar toilet stalls, injecting herself with their sperm,...

If David Cronenberg were suffering from a severe case of the baby blues, he might have cooked up something like birth/rebirth, a queasily clinical horror debut from Laura Moss that explores the darker sides of child rearing, from birth to death and way beyond.
Not for the fainthearted, this twisted if not exactly terrifying feature takes some cues from Stuart Gordon’s 1985 cult flick Re-Animator, as well as from classics like Dracula and Frankenstein, in its grisly portrayal of two women resurrecting a little girl’s dead corpse in the name of science and love.
Loaded with placentas, fetuses and enough plasma to supply several blood banks, the film uses its ample gore less for shock value than to channel the invasive medical procedures and transformations female bodies undergo while procreating, as well as the loss that women can experience afterwards. In other words, birth/rebirth is one big creepy metaphor for motherhood.

Filming has begun on the Shudder original horror film Birth/Rebirth, and Deadline has announced that the cast of the film includes Judy Reyes of Scrubs (who will also be seen in the horror movie Smile when it’s released on September 30th), Marin Ireland of The Umbrella Academy, and Aj Lister of Challengers.
Birth/Rebirth marks the feature debut of director Laura Moss, who also wrote the screenplay with Brendan J. O’Brien. On October 3rd Rising Up: the Story of the Zombie Rights Movement, directed by Laura Moss, made its New York City premiere at the Coney Island Film Festival, playing in a sold out block to an enthusiastic crowd.
I've been an attendee/participant at the super fun, well-run Ciff for the past several years, and this year's Block 6 (which preceded the fest's official horror block but contained several horror/comedy-ish films) was one of the most solid programs I've seen at this or any other film festival. But even with all that strong competition, Rising Up was still a standout...
Rising Up is a History Channel-esque documentary spoof chronicling the troubled hippie- and beatnik-led fight for the rights of the nation's undead. It sort of occupies that same world presented in Fido or at the end of Shaun of the Dead, where zombies have been begrudgingly accepted into society...
