London, Jan 6 (Ians) The third round of the Fa Cup in England will allow some coaches to give minutes to fringe players against lower-league opposition. But Everton coach Frank Lampard has no such luxury, as his side dropped into the bottom three in midweek after a dreadful 4-1 home loss to Brighton.
Everton visit a consistently-improving Manchester United, and another defeat for Lampard’s men could see his tenure at Goodison Park come to an end after just under a year.
Liverpool could hand a debut to new signing Cody Gakpo when they entertain Wolverhampton Wanderers. The visitors are showing signs of recovery under Julen Lopetegui and will look to take advantage of Virgil Van Dijk’s absence with a muscle injury.
Newcastle United are riding high in the Premier League and showed their defensive talents with a 0-0 draw away to leaders Arsenal on Tuesday. Eddie Howe’s side visits League One,...

If you’re going to unseat Avengers: Infinity War at the global box office, you have to aim for the stars. Or Manchester United, in this particular case.
Yes, it can only be the latest promo for Deadpool 2, Fox and David Leitch’s superhero sequel that is now only a few days out. Such a tight deadline means the studio’s marketing machine has been firing on all cylinders for weeks – albeit with the Merc’s own signature touch of meta humor.
The result? A zany, irreverent promotional push that practically screams ‘Deadpool’, and a football-themed TV spot has arrived today in order to drive home the point that Wade Wilson will stop at nothing until Infinity War has been cut down to size. At the domestic box office, at least.

West Ham United may have spent the first six months of the 2015-16 Premier League campaign in the top half of the table, but experiencing such lofty heights has been a rare occurrence in previous years.
Since 1993, the East London outfit have only finished in eighth position or above on three occasions, something which was last achieved during 2001-2002 when the likes of Michael Carrick, Joe Cole and Jermain Defoe plied their trade for the Hammers.
Despite twice being relegated to the second tier of English football since that year, West Ham have always been considered an attractive option for players looking to impress in the Premier League, but like with many clubs, they find themselves in the position of acting as a stepping stone for players who believe their future lies elsewhere.
In some cases, that has been inevitable. When Alan Pardew pulled off one...

Newcastle United ended a run of seven successive away defeats by claiming a battling point at Old Trafford against Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United.
Aleksandar Mitrovic even had a couple of chances for the Magpies on his full debut, but in truth it was Newcastle’s defence that starred in Manchester to earn Steve McClaren a 0-0 draw on his return to his old stomping ground.
Florian Thauvin also made his Newcastle debut off the bench as Tim Krul and Fabricio Coloccini in particular kept the Red Devils at bay.
In terms of McClaren’s starting line-up at Old Trafford, Steven Taylor came in for the suspended Daryl Janmaat, with Chancel Mbemba shifting to right-back, while the injured Moussa Sissoko was also replaced by Ayoze Perez. Additionally, Aleksandar Mitrovic made his full Newcastle debut, coming in for Papiss Cisse up front.

Team Selections
Both sides lined up roughly with similar shapes in variations of the 4-2-3-1. Arsenal went for a slightly more aggressive shape than predicted with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain being selected ahead of Tomas Rosicky and Aaron Ramsey who has recently returned from injury but could only make the Gunners bench. Szczesny and Monreal overcame injury concerns to take their places in the starting XI.
Manchester United lined up almost as predicted but Fellaini continued in the side at the expense of Juan Mata who didn’t get any game time, Herrera started ahead of Michael Carrick and Luke Shaw passed a late fitness test to start ahead of Phil Jones, which meant Marcos Rojo shifting to centre back.
Quite surprisingly, Arsene Wenger decided to utilise Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain In a wide right position which was risky considering that the selection of him or another player in midfield would have...

As often happens after England’s biennial tournament humiliation, the British press and public call for an injection of young blood. This was perhaps louder than ever following this summer’s World Cup in Brazil. The problem is, there isn’t always a hotbed of talent to pick from, especially when the domestic league is full of so much money and foreign purchases.
Nevertheless, coach Roy Hodgson has the task of finding such talent to replace the likes of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Glen Johnson, Michael Carrick and Phil Jagielka. So far, the revolution has introduced Calum Chambers, Nathaniel Clyne, Fraser Forster and John Stones to the Three Lions but, going into 2015, who is next?
When looking for new internationals, it was a shock to see so many average to mediocre players that already have one or two caps, therefore ruling them out of this list.

A large number of top players have left Tottenham Hotspur over the years. Sol Campbell, Michael Carrick, Dimitar Berbatov, Luka Modric and Gareth Bale spring to mind immediately – but those players had, in their minds, outgrown the club and effectively forced their way out. With that in mind, it was best to let them go, as their hearts were no longer with the Lilywhites and their enduring presence would only have disrupted the White Hart Lane dressing room.
However, there have also obviously been players sold who weren’t as vital to the team as most of the aforementioned superstars and who Spurs decided to sell off their own backs. Some of these players simply never performed, others hadn’t broken in to the first team yet, others didn’t fit the club’s style of play and others were deemed to be...

West Ham have long had the reputation of a ‘feeder’ club, highlighted most prominently by the 2003 season which saw countless players including many academy players leave following the club’s relegation. A team which included stars such as Jermain Defoe, Paulo Di Canio, Joe Cole, Frederic Kanoute and Glen Johnson, saw these players all leave in following season’s transfer windows to varying endeavours. Other notable players such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick were sold on at the beginnings of what could have been illustrious careers at West Ham.
Frank Lampard is a prime example of a player that went on to great post-West Ham success with Chelsea, but the decision to leave West Ham has not been a wise one for everyone. Whether higher expectations for money or an ambition for a bigger club, players have left in search of something more; something that they failed to find.

Spurs have had some great players in the Premier League era – Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Carrick, David Ginola and Jurgen Klinsmann to name but a few – but none of those players really ended up sticking around for a particularly long time.
In the twenty-two years since the Premier League began, there have been hundreds of players coming in to and out of White Hart Lane and the majority of those players either don’t make the grade or only end up playing a handful of times (you only have to look at the fact that Spurs currently have fifty professional players on their books to realise that that’s the case).

Manchester United may well be the biggest spenders of the summer transfer window, having spent £131.7 million since last season on left-back Luke Shaw, midfielder Ander Herrera, defender Marcos Rojo and his Argentina teammate Angel Di Maria, but there is still plenty of work left to be done at Old Trafford before Monday’s deadline day.
The transfer window will crash shut until January in a little under four days and while United have certainly compensated for the horrors of last summer – in which they signed only Marouane Fellaini this time 12 months ago – they cannot be 100% pleased with their wheeling’s and dealings as we approach next week’s cut-off point.
The likes of Rio Ferdinand and club-captain Nemanja Vidic have not been fully replaced, the experience of Ryan Giggs has gone while more worrying still is the gaping gap in the centre of their midfield, with Fellaini,...

Manchester United may well be the Premier League’s biggest spenders in this summer’s transfer window, but there’s still a great deal of work left to be done before Monday night’s deadline. The market will close at the beginning of next week and United manager Louis van Gaal remains in urgent need of a new central midfielder.

Competition: Premier league

Head-to-head league record: Manchester United wins 11, draws 5, Swansea wins 6.
Can United recapture their form and better their 13 year low of 64 points from last season? Will Swansea’s eye-catching strike force give Van Gaal nightmares?
For the second season in a row the Welsh side face United on the opening game – though this time at Old Trafford rather than the Liberty – and Garry Monk will be hoping that they can avoid a repeat of the 4-1 defeat handed out by David Moyes.
A lot has happened since then, and Swansea fans might well be buoyed by the fact that they’re not facing the champions this time out. But United have been given an injection with the arrival of extremist manager Louis Van Gaal, of whom you can’t help but expect big things...

When Louis Van Gaal took over at Manchester United, it was somewhat expected that the Dutchman would plunder his international squad to bring some of the best players to Old Trafford and kick off the rejuvenation project needed after last season’s disaster. Sadly for United fans, mooted moves for Arjen Robben, Ron Vlaar, Jordie Clasie and Memphis Depay have so far amounted to nothing.
But there may be cause for celebration in Manchester again as one of Holland’s most bruising enforcers is apparently in talks over a €10m move from AC Milan. That would represent a significantly impressive coup, considering De Jong’s pedigree, but it’s not surprising considering the state of Milan’s finances currently.
According to Goal, United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward met with up with the defensive midfielder’s epresentatives in London yesterday to discuss a move.

In recent years, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club have developed something of a reputation of buying a decent players and turning them in to great players. Michael Carrick, Dimitar Berbatov, Luka Modric and Gareth Bale, for example, all arrived at White Hart Lane as young players (of varying degrees) with bags of talent and even more potential, only to leave for astronomical fees after stepping up their games to new levels for the Lilywhites.
However, there have been an equally large number of players who showed a certain level of promise at White Hart Lane that was never fulfilled. Whether they were complete disasters, youngsters who fell from grace or players who were very good, but could have been truly great had it not been for injuries or other extenuating circumstances – and that’s what this article is going to be about.

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club have made some excellent signings over the years – and with highly profitable outcomes (in terms of financial profit, at least). Gareth Bale is the prime example – the Welshman cost the club a mere £7 million and, after six years of service to the club, he was sold to Real Madrid for a world record fee of around £85 million.
With other top players like Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Carrick and Luka Modric signing for relatively small fees and being moved on for at least double the price when a bigger club came calling, Spurs have garnered a reputation as something of a feeder club to the truly big teams in Europe – bringing players in, turning them in to world class professionals, and selling them when they apparently outgrow the White Hart Lane side. Tottenham Hotspur Football Club are always one of the most active in the transfer market when it comes to the relevant windows – whether it’s bringing in seven players like last summer or selling their high-profile stars to bigger clubs (see Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Carrick, Luka Modric and Gareth Bale, for example) for extortionate sums, Spurs always seem to be wheeling and dealing. If they aren’t actually doing the buying and selling, they tend to be more strongly linked to an abundance of potential transfers than any other club.
In the cases of Berbatov, Carrick, Modric and Bale, you would be hard-pressed to see any reason why their moves haven’t been justified. Berbatov and Carrick found success with Manchester United – winning seven Premier League title medals, two League Cup winning medals and a Champions League title between them – while Modric and Bale (albeit after...

Players come and players go, some stick with you, and some are irreplaceable when they leave. Sunderland’s ups and downs since the turn of the new century are such, that written down it would make a compelling, though ultimately unbelievable screenplay.
Obviously, it is due to these low points that Sunderland have had to shed or lose players they haven’t wanted to get rid of. On some occasions it has been beyond our control, while there have been plenty of players who have spoken so fondly of their time here that they must hanker regrets that they ever had to leave before their playing days were up.
Here is a run-through of what I believe are the ten players who most regret leaving Sunderland for one reason or another. There are plenty of former heroes and one or two villains in the pack,...

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will be hoping to join an elite group of players to have represented the Red Devils and won the World Cup when the tournament gets underway in Brazil.
As many as six current United stars could represent England at this summer’s tournament with Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Danny Welbeck and Rooney named in Roy Hodgson’s provisional 23-man squad, with Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley on standby.
Meanwhile, Shinji Kagawa, Juan Mata, Javier Hernandez, Robin van Persie and Luis Nani will each represent Japan, Spain, Mexico, Holland and Portugal, respectively, at the finals.

Manchester United’s season plunged all new depths on Sunday afternoon as they were held by basement side Fulham at Old Trafford.
Steve Sidwell and Darren Bent scored either side of two quick-fire Robin van Persie and Michael Carrick goals to stun the champions and leave them off the pace in the race for the top four.
United are now nine points adrift of fourth placed Liverpool and if this result doesn’t end their hopes of grabbing a Champions League place next season, it at least puts a big dent in them.
Yet it could have been worse because up until the 78th minute it looked as though the Red Devils would crash to their ninth league defeat of a truly miserable season so far.
But a draw against the topflight’s rock-bottom side is still an ignominious result, more so considering...

A frustrated David Moyes bemoaned his side’s draw with basement side Fulham as Manchester United blew the chance to keep pace with the top six.
With Tottenham and Liverpool both winning this weekend, United had to win against bottom of the league Fulham to keep within touching distance of the sides above them.
But Steve Sidwell and Darrent Bent struck in the first and second halves to deny the champions and leave them nine points off fourth-placed Liverpool.
After the game, Moyes said in his post-match press conference that his side were unlucky not to have taken the three points and claimed they should have won 3-1.
The Scot said:
We deserved to win the game, we deserved to get back in the game – even when it was 2-1 with about five minutes left Fulham never came up the pitch so it...

Manchester United were held to a draw by basement side Fulham thanks to a late goal from Darren Bent.
Steve Sidwell had earlier given the visitors a shock first-half lead but United fought back to go in front with quickfire goals from Robin van Persie and Michael Carrick.
But the drama wasn’t over and Bent would have the last say when his close ranged header on 90 minutes again reduced Old Trafford to silence.
United started the game brightly but fell behind when Sidwell stabbed in Lewis Holtby’s cross after 19 minutes as the bottom of the league club went in front.
The Red Devils may even have been two goals down at half time when Muamer Tankovic broke with another counter attack and played in Kieran Richardson, who blazed over.

After a relatively quiet January transfer window, it appears David Moyes is moving quickly to set up his summer targets, if today’s story in the Daily Star is anything to go by.
With United facing accusations all season of lacking bite in midfield (as well as creativity, at least until Juan Mata came in,) it is plainly obvious that the Reds needs further defensive midfield options, especially with Michael Carrick prone to injury and Darren Fletcher not yet looking the same player as before his debilitating illness took him out of the picture for so long. The Star say that Moyes will look to rectify that issue in the summer with a bid for Newcastle United’s Ivorian enforcer Cheick Tiote.

Manchester United have been told they can have Juan Mata – for £40 million.
That’s the news that broke at the start of the week and though Chelsea are apparently reciprocal to the idea of selling their unused star to the champions, a move remains unlikely.
Mata is very much on the fringes at Stamford Bridge having only made 13 Premier League appearances this season, and was left out of the Blues’ win over United at the weekend.
The Red Devils are desperate to add creativity to their midfield and the Spain star would certainly be a tonic, having created more chances than all of their central midfielders combined this term.
With 30 chances created, that’s more than half that mustered up by Michael Carrick and dwarfs Tom Cleverley’s seven, Shinji Kagawa’s six, Darren Fletcher’s two and Marouane Fellaini’s one.
But a move is probably not going to happen.

Samuel Eto’o became the first Chelsea player since 1954 to hit a hat-trick against Manchester United. A heavy defeat at Stamford Bridge despite Javier Hernandez’s consolation left David Moyes and the Red Devils 14 points off the pace, effectively ending their bid to defend the Premier League title.
Ashley Young drew a low early stop from Petr Cech as United made the better start. Despite that hosts Chelsea went ahead after a quarter of an hour through Eto’o. The veteran African saw his near post shot loop off Michael Carrick and over David De Gea in the opposite corner.
Goalmouth action scarcely followed in this tight, cagey contest. Danny Welbeck scuffed a close range effort straight at Petr Cech late on in the first half after. Cesar Azpilicueta did just enough to put the Red Devils frontman off.

Manchester United travel to Chelsea on Sunday hoping for better than the bore draw the sides produced in August. David Moyes also knows that Jose Mourinho has never lost a home Premier League game in English football. No pressure then.
The Red Devils ship was steadied in their last outing as Moyes ended a run of three successive defeats by being injury-hit Swansea. Mourinho’s Blues meanwhile recorded five straight wins since another tepid goalless draw with Arsenal before Christmas.
United have only one victory in their last six against Chelsea, coincidentally a 3-2 win at Stamford Bridge in October 2012. Sendings off for Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres proved pivotal as the Blues had comeback from 2-0 down to equalize before Javier Hernandez sunk the nine men.

Sunderland have not beaten Manchester United since they last met in the League Cup over 13 years ago. Kevin Phillips’s extra time penalty took the Black Cats into quarter-finals in November 2000 with Red Devils goalscorer Dwight Yorke being sent off.
United have since won 16 of the 20 subsequent encounters that have all come in the Premier League and the other four were drawn. The Black Cats will have home advantage first in this two-legged tie with the winners to face either West Ham United or Manchester City at Wembley.
Gus Poyet has had defensive injuries worrying him, but despite Sunderland’s struggle in the league they remain in both domestic cup competitions. The basement club of the English top flight will be targeting an upset in this first leg similar to their shock win over City in November.

Swansea made history by winning at Old Trafford thanks to Wayne Routledge’s early chip and a late Wilfried Bony header. Manchester United fell at the first Fa Cup hurdle despite Javier Hernandez scoring as substitute Fabio was sent off.
Defeat for the Red Devils – their fifth at home in all competitions this term – increases the pressure on David Moyes. United are still in the Capital One Cup, but look short of strength to defend their Premier League title and make a big splash in the Champions League.
Wayne Rooney joined a lengthy injury list for the hosts as Moyes made six changes from the home loss to Tottenham Hotspur on New Year’s Day. Defenders Nemnaja Vidic and Patrice Evra were rested completely whilst Michael Carrick, David De Gea and Adnan Janzuaj dropped to the bench.

Despite all the talent Juan Mata undoubtedly posses which saw him win back-to-back Player of the Year awards at Chelsea, you could sense that as soon as Jose Mourinho returned to his spiritual home at Stamford Bridge, that Mata would not be of such of importance for Chelsea compared to the past two years.
And after being substituted after just 53 minutes at St. Mary’s on Sunday, (where Chelsea went onto to win 3-0, with Mata’s replacement Oscar playing a part in all 3 goals) the Spaniard did not hold back on showing his frustration, raising more questions over the future of the playmaker.
Since then Jose Mourinho went on to say that he would prefer if Mata was to remain at the club, however he will not hold back the Spaniard if he requests a transfer.

Tottenham Hotspur won at Old Trafford for the second successive season thanks to goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen. Manchester United responded through Danny Welbeck, but the Premier League champions stay 11 points adrift of leaders Arsenal.
Welbeck forced Hugo Lloris in the Spurs goal to parry away early on as he raced through on goal and left Michael Dawson for dead. Chris Smalling also drew a save from the visiting keeper.
David De Gea was then worked by Aaron Lennon when Adebayor found Soldado and the Spanish striker slipped in the Tottenham winger. Nemanja Vidic headed wide from a right wing corner on 20 minutes, but the Red Devils later conceded on the counter.
Adebayor headed home Eriksen’s stood up centre ten minutes before half time and Hotspur then could have gone in two goals ahead. Soldado shanked wide, however, when found by a lovely Lennon cross.

Premier League champions Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have drawn their last two meetings. They start 2014 level on points and next to one another in the table both looking to close the gap on the top four.
David Moyes’s Red Devils have hit fine form in their festive fixtures by recording six successive victories after failing to win the first three matches in December. Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood meanwhile got the second win of his reign against Stoke on Sunday.
Spurs are also buoyed by the fact they won on their last visit to Old Trafford in September 2012. Clint Dempsey netted the winner then, but has re-joined former club Fulham on loan from Mls franchise Seattle Sounders.

United will assess Wayne Rooney’s groin injury that kept him out of the away victory at Norwich last time out. The England talisman has been unable to train and remains doubtful.

Manchester United confirmed their place in the Champions League knockout stage with their biggest ever away win in the competition over Sami Hyypia’s Bayer Leverkusen in Germany.
Antonio Valencia completed a fine team move to give the Red Devils the lead following early scares. Emir Spahic then headed Wayne Rooney’s free kick past his own keeper to make it 2-0 at the break.
Jonny Evans exploited more set piece frailties in the second half, tapping in at close range when Patrice Evra nodded on a Ryan Giggs corner. Chris Smalling then added a fourth and Nani a fifth to cap a consummate away performance.
David Moyes’s team put their poor showing in San Sebastian against Real Sociedad last time out firmly behind them here. United had to do without senior names Robin van Persie, Nemanja Vidic and Michael Carrick as they were all out injured.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has been given a new, two year contract, tying him to the club until 2015 with the option of a one-year extension, according to the BBC.
The new deal means the 32-year-old could play past his 35th birthday, having been with the Red Devils since 2006 after signing from Tottenham Hotspur.
Carrick is currently nursing an Achilles injury he aggravated during the 1-0 win over Arsenal, causing him to miss each of England’s two friendlies over the subsequent international break.
However, he has done enough to impress manager David Moyes and earn the new contract, coming in for glowing praise from the former Everton boss.
He is an exceptional man and a true professional,” Moyes said.
During Carrick’s stay at Old Trafford, he has helped his side win five Premier League titles, one Champions League, one League Cup and one Fifa Club World Cup.

The summer transfer window was one of great disappointment for many United fans. July began with them favourites to land Barcelona’s much-coveted Thiago Alcantara, whose subsequent move to Bayern Munich’s midfield oligopoly was merely an indication of what was to follow.
After a lengthy silence, Cesc Fábregas emerged from his summer holiday to rubbish claims that he had been in talks with the Manchester club, and proceeded to declare his love affair with the Catalan giants very much ongoing.
Rumours of Luka Modrić angling for a way out of Madrid were quickly quashed following Xabi Alonso’s broken foot, and, mysterious lawyers aside, a move for Bilbao’s Ander Herrera never came close to materialising.
Through all of the miscommunication, rumours and confusion one thing was clear – Moyes was determined to add a creative spark to aid the oft overworked Michael Carrick in the deeper parts of the pitch,...

Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana and forward Jay Rodriguez have been rewarded for their club’s excellent start to the Premier League season with England call-ups.
Under Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino the Saints sit sixth in the top flight level on points with Manchester City. Uncapped pair Lallana and Rodriguez join St Marys teammate Rickie Lambert in Roy Hodgson’s squad for the friendlies with Chile and Germany.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson earns a recall and right back Glen Johnson returns. Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere has also been included despite an ankle injury. Gunners pair Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remain sidelined.
Hodgson has selected three left backs for the Wembley dates in Leighton Baines (Everton), Ashley Cole (Chelsea) and Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal). Raheem Sterling drops down onto the Under-21 roster.

Manchester United travel to the Basque Country knowing another win over San Sebastian side Real Sociedad would take them to the safe haven of ten Champions League group stage points.
Defenders Jonny Evans and Rafael miss out with back and ankle problems respectively whilst midfielder Tom Cleverley has travelled, but is a doubt after suffering double vision in the win over Fulham. The Guardian’s latest report is that Michael Carrick won’t travel for the game.
An early own goal in the reverse fixture was enough to take the Red Devils past last season’s surprise package in La Liga. Sociedad gave a good account of themselves at Old Trafford, but look destined to finish bottom of the group in their maiden Champions League campaign.
Like United the Spanish club are under new management. Philippe Montanier left Sociedad as he was out of contract in the summer and moved to Rennes.

The Cottagers will be without Hugo Rodallega and Matthew Briggs for today’s tough home fixture. Influential defender Brede Hangeland remains doubtful. Manager Martin Jol is likely to stick with Darren Bent and Dimitar Berbatov up front, while Kacaniklic could be preferred in midfield over Bryan Ruiz.
Manchester United have Danny Welbeck and Darren Fletcher as the confirmed absentees. Marouane Fellaini is likely to start alongside Michael Carrick in midfield – replacing the equally unimpressive Tom Cleverley. Manager David Moyes must consider whether Javier Hernandez deserves a starting birth after his recent goal-scoring form.
Fulham are coming off the back a 4-3 defeat to Championship side Leicester City in the Capital One Cup. The side also lost to Southampton 2-0 prior to the cup game. Jol is under intense pressure as the London outfit are...

With Manchester United enduring one of their worst starts to a Premier League season in recent years, manager David Moyes has already had his future with the side called into question.
After former manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired this summer to end a trophy-laden 26 years with the Premier League holders, he gave a rousing speech in his last home game in which he urged the supporters to ‘stand by the new manager’.
Was he seemingly hinting how United won’t have it all their way upon his immediate arrival?
Many experts looking at the Manchester United side within the last 12 months highlighted the potential problems awaiting the new manager this season, and it’s already rung true early on this campaign.
The Lancashire outfit are currently 8th in the Premier League with 11 points after 8 games – 8 points adrift of Arsenal in 1st place. They’ve succumbed to three league defeats already.

The 2013/2014 season is one of the most open seasons since the Premier League began. This is the first time, in my memory, that there has been no clear favourite to win the Premier League title. In fact there are six clubs that all have a very good chance of winning the league.
All of these six clubs have strong reasons why they might win the Premier League this year and equally there are reasons why these clubs may falter and miss out on the top spot. I have listed these reasons here so read on and decide who you think will be Premier League Champions come next May.
1. Manchester United

After a 2-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion this week, Manchester United manager David Moyes was informed it was the worst start the side have made since the 1989/90 season.
The Premier League holders have seven points from their first six league games, and have already been defeated by Liverpool (1-0), Manchester City (4-1), and West Brom (2-1) this season.
Moyes insists he can turn the club around, but their dismal start is a worry for many who were backing the side to retain the Premier League crown – as United are currently eight points off first-placed Arsenal.
A number of longer-serving Manchester United players have been at fault early on this season, and their poor showings may give Moyes pause for thought whether they can re-find their form or if they need to be replaced – most notably, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia, Nani, Anderson, and Michael Carrick.

Manchester United crashed to their worst start to a Premier League season since 1989 with a shock defeat against West Brom at Old Trafford.
Second half goals from Morgan Amalfitano and Saido Berahino either side of a sumptuous Wayne Rooney freekick condemned the defending champions to their second consecutive league loss.
The Red Devils started the brighter of the two and had the Baggies hemmed into their own half in the early exchanges, with Javier Hernandez and Nani looking threatening.
The latter almost created an opening midway through the first half after floating a cross in toward Rooney, who saw the ball drift past him out of play.
West Brom weren’t without their chances either, and were happy to operate on the counter attack for large swathes of the first half.
Stephane Sessegnon came the closest for the away side when he flashed a header across the...

Manchester City’s box-to-box midfielder Yaya Toure is widely regarded as one of the side’s most influential players since signing from Catalan giants Barcelona in 2010.
Often known for his rampaging runs through midfield and his casual swagger style of play, Toure has risen to star status during his time in the Premier League. He’s been utilised largely in two positions for the Citizens – as a holding midfielder or a central midfielder given license to roam up the pitch.
This season has once again seen him playing a relinquished role in midfield, positioned in front of the defence as protection. New manager Manuel Pellegrini has used the 30-year old to break up the attacks and move the ball on in a swift fashion, or to set up counter attacks – dribbling the ball out of midfield at a minimum.

In the side’s first Champions League game of the new campaign, Premier League holders Manchester United ran out 4-2 winners against Bayern Leverkusen – with new-boy Marouane Fellaini enjoying an impressive European debut.
The Belgian international played alongside Michael Carrick in the heart of the midfield – looking assured and comfortable in front of the defence.
If there were any doubters of why the Red Devils shelled out big money to sign the midfielder on deadline day, Fellaini certainly silenced his critics.
Certainly one of the strongest players on the pitch, the visitors were second-best coming up against him, and Fellaini battled hard to win the ball and lay it off to teammates. He was even showcased his vision with a selection of long-range passes to advancing players.

As far as most gamers are concerned, there’s only one game that’s worth having coming out this month – Grand Theft Auto V.
With all the hype currently surrounding Rockstar Game’s upcoming crime epic, it’s easy to forget that a week on Friday, FIFA 14 is released in Europe.
But that’s not to say we’ve forgotten, and here at What Culture!, we’re just excited about scoring a 30-yard free-kick as we are stealing someone’s car and taking it for a spin into the desert.
But once the excitement of pre-release has washed off, there are bound to be niggles and complaints from unsatisfied fans – and that’s particularly true of FIFA 14.
Here then, we take a look at 10 inevitabilities we aren’t looking forward to.
