From outspoken stand up comedian, to regular star of children’s television and even a BAFTA to his name, it is safe to say that over the past few years, Glasgow based Billy Kirkwood has been making a name for himself in. To many however, he is better known as simply: Billy Kirkwood, pro-wrestling fan.
Having toured with WWE legends Mick Foley and William Regal, and assuming the role of colour commentator for Insane Championship Wrestling and the Scottish Wrestling Alliance, Billy has become one of the most recognisable figures in Scottish wrestling. Not content to leave this at the commentary desk however, Billy and fellow stand up Chris Brooker have embarked on a mission to bring pro-wrestling comedy to the world renound Edinburgh Festival with their new show: I Am the Tag Team Champions. This past week, WhatCulture’s Simon Cassidy had the chance to speak to Mr Kirkwood about wrestling,...

Gervais collaborator gets his own TV pilot, Pegg's Comic-Con costume fetish causes offence, and Russell Brand wants to be a vicar ... so it seems
Best of the week's news
Stephen Merchant is working on his own TV project – his first outside of his partnership with Ricky Gervais. The lanky star is to write and appear in a pilot entitled Hello Ladies, based on his 2011 standup tour of the same name. The pilot – like the standup show – will focus on Merchant's supposed cackhandedness with the opposite sex, and will shoot later this year, according to Deadline. Merchant (who will also executive produce) has written the episode with Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, both former writers on the Us version of The Office. Eisenberg and Stupnitsky also worked on the comedy films Year One and Bad Teacher.
Lovers of comedy, look away now: Russell Crowe is to direct a biopic of Bill Hicks.

With The Woman In Black out in the UK on Friday, we spoke to star Daniel Radcliffe about his role in the film, leaving Harry Potter behind and more...
The Woman In Black marks a few firsts. One, it’s the first foray into the gothic ghost story for the revived Hammer, a studio famous for its classic, gory interpretations of Dracula and Frankenstein. Two, it marks the cinema debut for Susan Hill’s 1983 novel of the same name, having already conquered the West End as the second longest-running stage play in its history.
Three, this is the first post-Potter outing for Daniel Radcliffe, who stars as Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer haunted by both the recent death of his wife and the terrifying ghost of the film’s title. Having already made a successful debut weekend at the Us, The Woman In Black arrives in UK cinemas this Friday,...

Having seen Andy Parsons (off of Mock the Week) live a couple of months ago as part of his Britain’s Got Idiots tour, the release of the DVD before Christmas seemed inevitable. For an in-depth review check this out. I re-watched the performance in its edited DVD form, and the process of cutting it down for the small screen has fine-tuned and tightened some of the material. This makes it a slightly sharper experience, but at nearly an hour and a half long it still feels bloated in some places. If you are looking for extensive DVD extras you’ve come to the wrong place. You get his Live at the Apollo performance as well as Parsons commentating over the top of the main show. The final extra is quite funny, but I won’t spoil it for you if you’re planning on buying the DVD. Britain’s...

Montreal - Up-and-coming talent was in the spotlight Wednesday night at the 26th annual Just For Laughs comedy festival here as an annual competition of Canadian comedians and the first of two "New Faces" showcases drew big crowds of industry folks and fans alike.
As the English-language portion of Jfl moved into its hot phase, Tyler Hawkins Wednesday won the annual "Homegrown" competition of Canadian standups, with Phil Hanley clinching the runner-up spot.
The competition was judged by an industry jury made up of "Chelsea Lately" talent executive Michael Cox, the Tonight Show's Ross Mark, Michelle Daly from the Comedy Network and TV Land Canada, as well as ABC/ABC Studios casting manager Billy Murphy.
Hawkins scored laughs with jokes with a tongue-in-cheek twist on men's experiences meeting women at bars ("I just wanna dance with my buddies.") and his fat buddy Dave who keeps him out of trouble.
Hanley drew a strong audience response with his stay-at-home son shtick. His opener ("I am not only a comedian, I'm also a stay-at-home son.") already had the crowd in stitches, and he followed up with punchlines about wearing his father's cardigan ("It is also a powerful contraceptive.") and his being less computer-savvy than his appearance might suggest. He closed with a relationship joke (asking why people know right away when they meet "the right one," but take a year to realize when they meet the wrong one) that led to a loud ovation from the audience.
Among other "Homegrown" performers, Dan Bingham and host Deb Digiovanni also drew consistent laughs from the crowd.
Sean Patton in the New Faces show also earned positive reviews for his offbeat and edgy Wednesday night set about such things as picking fights and broken hearts.
At a midnight show that put the spotlight on musical comedy and was also a hot ticket among agents, managers and TV executives, the audience particularly loved online favorites Jon Lajoie with his rap about being an average guy and young Bo Burnham with his songs about love and sexuality.
Among the other acts that industry attendees of Jfl were buzzing about Wednesday were one-man shows by Danny Hoch and Brendon Burns, as well as standup Maz Jobrani.
Thursday marks the start of the inaugural Just Comedy industry conference and market organized by Jfl and Achilles Media.
