Netflix has unveiled the first look at Age of Samurai – a series that looks more like an action flick than a documentary.
The streamer has dropped the first trailer (above) for the six-part series, which is produced by Canadian production company Cream Productions.
The series looks at the warring kingdoms of feudal Japan in the 16th Century – the Sengoku period – a time of ubiquitous civil war, social unrest and political intrigue.
It tells the story of Date Masamune, a notorious samurai known as the ‘One-Eyed Dragon’ who fought alongside the three founding fathers of Japan – warlords who led fierce armies of samurai against each other to unite the nation 400 years ago. His is thought to have been the inspiration for the design of Darth Vader’s iconic helmet. As a child he infamously plucked out his own eye when it became infected with smallpox, murdered his younger brother to ensure his line of succession,...

This week on Origins: The Journey of Humankind, the documentary series hosted by Jason Silva examines how medicine has shaped human development. Early man and even our cousins the Neanderthals had a rudimentary understanding of medicinal plants and methods of helping set broken bones or fighting infection. However, it was not really until civilisation started to develop that medicine began to move on. With the classical world seeing great advances in surgery and other treatments, physicians like the Greek Galen carried out methodical research and documented their findings so well that they were used by doctors hundreds of years later. But they...read more...

Need to wake up after a long day? National Geographic has shows for that and brought three of them to the 2014 Television Critics Association tour: "Brain Games," "None of the Above" and "Duck Quacks Don't Echo."
"Brain Games" host Jason Silva started out the presentation with a video showing the psychological effects of "Free Money." Apparently, people will take lots of money without hesitation if no one is watching. A real person will slow down someone from taking the money. And a picture of big eyes makes people feel so paranoid that they run away with no money at all.
Tom Papa, the host of "Duck Quacks Don't Echo," challenged the audience to eat saltine crackers. No really -- it's not possible to eat six saltine crackers in under one minute. The reason has to do with the absorption of all your saliva by the cracker.

Revision3's TestTube sub-network only launched a few days ago, but it is already providing viewers with some incredible thought-provoking content. The network's newest show is Shots of Awe, where host Jason Silva rapidly delivers a complex philosophical idea while a hip-hop montage of cool images accompanies him. Silva, who hosts Brain Games on the National Geographic channel, has an abundance of deep topics stored in his head. In one episode, he talks about futurism, incorporating the wild philosophy of Ray Kurzweil. In the most recent episode, he discusses what it means to be awed, a fitting topic given his channel's title. If Shots of Awe has a contemporary, it is PBS Idea Channel, the similarly philosophical and fast-talking exploration of big ideas that has now surged past 235,000 subscribers. However, where Idea Channel is flip and rooted heavily in Internet culture, Shots of Awe is more serious and aims to...

If you like to play along with game shows and fancy yourself observant, National Geographic Channel's "Brain Games" is tremendous fun.
Hosted by self-described wonder junkie Jason Silva, the series launching Monday, April 22, delves into what it means to think and how our brains are conditioned. Though this sounds like an arcane subject, it's very accessible, and there's nothing stuffy about the show.
Rather, Silva, a fast-talking guru of the digital age who defines earnest, tells Zap2it, "One of my main things is to get people to think exponentially."
He's completely plugged into technology and marvels at how much more democratic information is today -- provided people have access to technology.
"A young person in Africa has better communication technology than the president did 25 years ago," Silva says. "How does this change our world? It means we don't have to wait 300 years for the impossible to seem possible.

Tune in alert for "Brain Games" on National Geographic Channel. The series premieres tonight at 9 Pm Et. Jason Silva, the host of .Brain Games. is a wonder junkie and self proclaimed idea DJ. As host, Jason will take viewers through brain games, allowing them to play along at home. In June 2012, Jason premiered a short video .Radical Openness. at the Ted conference, which has been generating considerable viral buzz since its premiere. At the summer TCA press tour, I asked the panel of producers and Mr. Silva about the series. One of the concerns I asked them was if these brain game tricks were being used in subliminal TV advertising: Producer Vin Rubino said, "We do...

Having auto-tuned and remixed Mister Rogers to great viral success, PBS's web originals branch PBS Digital Studios has given the same treatment to the perennially zen late host of the "The Joy of Painting," Bob Ross. "Happy Little Clouds," which you can watch below, is, like the Mister Rogers "Garden of Your Mind" video, the work of John D. Boswell. On his own YouTube channel, Boswell has science-themed remix pieces featuring Morgan Freeman, Jason Silva and Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Now how about some happy little trees, hmm?...

Growing up in Venezuela and New York City, Jason Silva and Max Lugavere had their own big ideas and big dreams. Then they met each other at the University of Miami where they both studied film, they hoped they might someday be able to make documentary films and explore their passions for technology and science. Their opportunity came sooner than they expected, when they were asked to join Al Gore's nascent CurrentTV in 2005, and before long Max and Jason were hosts of their own nightly show Max and Jason: Still Up on the network. They began with a novel concept, which was also their passion: to create and promote smart, engaging, thought-provoking, and entertaining content. With their show on Current as a platform, they became tastemakers and social curators, recognized as such they were featured in the Gap Icons campaign and asked to serve as co-hosts of Ted's Pangea Day.

Above, The Turning Into Gods trailer. Below, right, Jason Silva. You might recognize Venezuela-born Jason Silva from his work hosting shows for Al Gore's Emmy-winning Current TV network—and from his Gap's Icon campaign billboards. What you probably don't know is he's also a documentarian obsessed with the intersection of science, technology, and art, and is working on a new film called Turning Into Gods. Here he introduces some of the ideas he's exploring in the movie. At a recent Ted Conference, a dinner was organized by the Edge Foundation, a think tank and nonprofit that celebrates big ideas. The theme of the evening was the "New Age of Wonder," and the discussion drew comparisons to the Romantic Age, the period between 1770 and 1830 when science and art were friends. It was a time when astronomers and poets were in some ways indistinguishable, as artists were inspired by science's intoxicating sense of awe and wonder.
