Who were the best LGBTQ couples in daytime soap opera history? The sad truth is that there aren’t that many to choose from. Despite the shows dipping their toes in the water with queer characters and storylines in the 1990s — like Ryan Phillippe as groundbreaking gay teen Billy Douglas on “One Life to Live” from 1992 to 1993 — the show shied away from romance for its queer characters until the 21st century. Scroll down to read some of our forum posters’ favorites below.

"8 Tales of Horror." Ammo Content + Hewes Pictures have debuted the first official trailer for a new horror anthology feature titled Murder Manual, available to watch sometime on VOD this summer. Frightening, interlocking chapters depicting horrific and psychologically altering tales of death. Yet another fun horror anthology project, but with a bit of a twist. "While Murder Manual is an anthology film, the trailer reveals that all the stories are intertwined in sinister ways. They are all brought together to form the titular purpose, a murder manual, with horrifying events to accompany its creation." The film's main cast features Emilia Clarke, Melanie Cruz, Bryan Manley Davis, Hadley Fraser, Anthony Goss, Van Hansis, Sally Hughes, and Sophie Knapp. From this first look footage, there doesn't seem to be much in here that is interesting or unique, perhaps there's more substance hidden inside the manual. Only one way to find out... Here's the...

“EastSiders” is an Emmy-nominated dark comedy about a gay couple and their friends in Silver Lake, Calif. For creator/star Kit Williamson, the seven-year journey of making the series — which began as a $2,000 self-financed project, and ended with its fourth and final season dropping on Netflix back in December — has been an education. Along the way, he’s shared his insights with IndieWire about why actors should consider making a web series, what you need to consider before starting an indie series, his secrets to successfully crowdfunding, and how he sold the series to Netflix. Here is his final take on the series and what he learned from it.
“If it was easy, everyone would do it.”
After seven years and four seasons, my indie series “EastSiders” is coming to an end. It’s been a wild ride from YouTube to Netflix, where the show is now available worldwide, subtitled in more than 30 languages.

Exclusive: The fourth and final season of Kit Williamson’s Emmy-nominated Lgbtq series Eastsiders will be available on Netflix on December 1.
Thanks to a Kickstarter campaign that raised over $140,000 from fans, Eastsiders, a co-production with Wolfe Video, will be back with a fourth season that picks up with the Silver Lake gang one year later. Executive produced by Williamson and his husband John Halbach, who also star, the six-episode Season 4 tackles heavy, adult-world questions like how do two human beings make love last? What does commitment really look like in a long-term relationship? And what unique challenges does a “gay marriage” present?
Cal (Williamson) and Thom (Van Hansis) are back home from Season 3’s cross-country road trip, still a couple but wondering if they are really just best friends with benefits. Douglas (Willam Belli) and Quincy (Stephen Guarino) are engaged to be married, but with very different ideas about what a gay wedding should be.

If you’re a fan of cinema, chances are, you’re also a fan of Ethan Hawke. The multi-hyphenate actor/writer/director has made a career out of exploring interesting avenues. As stated once before in a look at the man, there seems to be almost nothing that Hawke can not do. He’s directed films (including a documentary), written novels, starred in tiny indies, large scale movies, and everything in between. He’s likely best known for his collaborations with Richard Linklater, but they hardly define the man. A four time Academy Award nominee, he’s a perfect candidate for a Spotlight piece. After all, if he ever gets to a fifth Oscar nomination without a win, he’ll be hugely overdue for a statue. Hawke’s new film is, of course, First Reformed, which pairs him with filmmaker Paul Schrader. The movie is described cryptically as follows on...

"It's been a while since we've talked. Even a pastor needs a pastor." A24 has debuted the first official trailer for the indie drama First Reformed, which premiered at the Venice / Telluride / Toronto trifecta of film festivals last fall. And you need to see this trailer. First Reformed stars Ethan Hawke as a middle-aged parish pastor at a small Dutch Reform church in upstate New York, dealing with a spiritual identity crisis. The film's cast includes Amanda Seyfried, Michael Gaston, Cedric the Entertainer, Van Hansis, Philip Ettinge, Victoria Hill, and Satchel Eden Bell. Described as a "a gripping thriller about a crisis of faith that is at once personal, political, and planetary." This had some mixed reviews coming out of the festivals last fall, but it looks darn good from this fine trailer here. I mean really: Hawke at his best, amazing cinematography, just the right amount of melodramatic spunk.

On July 1, my independently produced Lgbt series “EastSiders” made its debut on Netflix. This is the first time in the series’ four-year history that it has been made available internationally, with subtitles in more than a dozen languages. It’s been a long road from YouTube to Netflix, and looking back there were several key decisions we made that helped our show compete in an increasingly crowded space.
I wish I could say that I predicted this, that it was all part of some master plan, but the truth is I had no idea a series could have as many lives as “EastSiders” has had. My goals when I created the show were simple; I wanted to write, direct and star in a project and see it through to completion, because I had been involved in so many micro budget projects that never saw the light of day. I also...

Chicago – The Red Carpet was rolled out at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago on September 17th, 2015, as the 33rd “Reeling” Film Festival – the second oldest Lgbtq celebration in cinema history – had its Opening Night. The film that kicked off the fest was “Fourth Man Out,” beginning a week long showcase of Lgbtq films.
The film is a hilarious and sensitive comedy about modern attitudes and relationships, as a small town man reveals to his friends and family that he is gay on his 24th birthday. Walking the Red Carpet were featured performers Kate Flannery (“The Office”), Parker Young (TV’s “Arrow”) and Evan Todd. Also lending support was Van Hansis (“As the World Turns”), who is featured in the festival entry, “Kiss Me, Kill Me.”

To find the latest offering for its On Demand library, Vimeo has turned to the independent web series community. There, it has found EastSiders, an acclaimed drama that will premiere its second season exclusively on Vimeo On Demand beginning on September 15th.
EastSiders tells the story of Cal (series creator Kit Williamson) and Thom (Van Hansis), a gay couple looking to save their relationship after infidelity threatens to break it apart. The first season of the series premiered in December 2012 and completed its nine-episode run more than six months later. Eventually, a single-installment version of the series made it to TV via Logo.
In April 2014, Williamson began his quest for a second season. He launched a Kickstarter campaign through which he hoped to raise $125,000 to fund additional episodes. Despite that hefty price tag, EastSiders met and surpassed its goal, ultimately raising more than $150,000.

Here's your daily dose of an indie film, web series, TV pilot, what-have-you in progress -- at the end of the week, you'll have the chance to vote for your favorite. In the meantime: Is this a project you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments. Ms. Guidance Logline: "Ms. Guidance" is an irreverent and absurd dark comedy about trying to give up the dream that won't give up on you. Elevator Pitch: After a mental breakdown on the New York stage, struggling actress Jenny Bump returns to the performing arts boarding school she attended in her youth to act as a guidance counselor. However, listening to the dreams of her students only stokes the dying embers of her own, and soon Jenny is back to her old tricks, scheming for fame and ruining lives -- potentially her own -- in the process. Production Team: Van Hansis (Producer,...

Project Name: Ms. Guidance
Asking For: $35,000 on Kickstarter
Amount Raised Thus Far (At Time Of Post): $11,515
Days Remaining In Campaign (At Time Of Post): 22
Description: Van Hansis and James Ryan Caldwell are taking aim at the culture of the East Coast upper crust. They are the creators of Ms. Guidance, which follows a failed actress as she returns to the boarding school where she received her education.
The protagonist of Ms. Guidance is a woman named Jenny Bump. Despite her somewhat adorable name, she is a self-absorbed egotist filled with vanity. As she returns to the stuffy place where she spent her formative years and takes up a guidance counselor position, she continues to think of herself and her potential career in show business. Her interactions with students and colleagues, as seen in the Ms. Guidance pitch video, often consist of two self-important sniping at each other.

This year, a number of actors, athletes, and musicians came out of the closet, reminding fans to be true to who they are. Their statements came with messages of honesty, courage, and pride. But it was their actions in the wake of these public declarations that had the most impact. None of them suddenly were out of a job, or shunned from Hollywood. These entertainers were not denied adoration or encouragement from fans and the industry alike.
Instead, they continued to push forward, owning their truth, and breaking down barriers all at the same time.

Trevor Einhorn (l) and Kit Williamson (r) on Mad Men. (AMC)
Kit Williamson is finding himself in a pretty good place these days. He has his recurring role of Ed Gifford on the uber-popular AMC series Mad Men, which is currently airing the first half of its seventh and final season. And then, on the opposite side of the spectrum, he has his popular online series EastSiders, which we’re big fans of here at TheBacklot. The series follows Williamson’s Cal in his relationship with Thom (the newly out Van Hansis) as well as their circle of friends.
As is the case in the entertainment business, it all comes down to money and while EastSiders has planned a second season, much of it ever coming to life depends on the success of a new Kickstarter campaign to raise production funds. But Kit and the gang have a few other ideas where you can help.

We first fell in love with Van Hansis during his stint as the groundbreaking Luke Snyder on As The World Turns, and Luke’s relationship with dimbulb explosives expert Noah, and lovably crusty trainwreck Reid. Van garnered three Emmy nominations for the role, and he helped open the floodgates for gay characters on daytime drama.
Van moved to TV roles and a few indie films after Atwt, but came roaring back into our lives when he co-starred in the web series phenom Eastsiders, as Thom, one half of a troubled couple. Eastsiders will be back for Season Two, and the show’s creator (and Thom’s partner on the show), Kit Williamson sat down with Van to discuss the show and his career.
It’s a great interview, as Van talks about the impact that Luke had on Daytime TV, and the differences and similarities between Luke and Thom, and...
