It was Marisa Miller in the jeweled bikini. Well, less of a bikini and more of a big necklace (was it even that big?) strategically placed to cover her nipples. The magazine had arrived at our apartment unceremoniously. My boyfriend, taking advantage of a seemingly last ditch effort by the publishing industry to save the future of print, had purchased a bundle deal on magazine subscriptions. Thusly, we had copies of various weekly publications jammed into our mailbox until the post man had to ring our bell for us to come down and get them.

The Internet can’t stop talking about Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue’s first-ever plus-size model Robyn Lawley, and rightfully so. It’s about time. Not only is Lawley’s inclusion creating discourse about the screwed up standards of beauty in fashion and entertainment, which are so far removed from society, but it’s also encouraging to see for women who don’t fit the crushing supermodel stereotype.
Lawley isn’t carrying the torch alone: here are 12 plus-size models who’ve made history. Side note: the next goal should be to get rid of the term “plus-size” altogether. Models are, by definition, models, not matter what size, shape, form.

The 24-year-old Sydney-based model didn’t just make history with the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. She’s also the first plus-size model star in a Ralph Lauren campaign, cover Australian Cosmopolitan, and be shot for the Aussie version of Vogue and GQ.

Diets seem to be the perpetual topic of conversation in both Hollywood and the fashion industry, so it's refreshing to hear a top figure in both worlds eschew the topic altogether.
Tyra Banks sounded off on the obsession with dieting during an event for the new cycle of "America's Next Top Model" on Wednesday, telling Us Weekly, "I don't believe in diets." Of course, Tyra has seen it all when it comes to body scrutiny, rising to fame for her thin, model-ready figure and serving as the subject of harsh criticism after unflattering swimsuit pictures surfaced at the pinnacle of her career.
Thankfully, the television host knows how to stay down to earth, despite her weight fluctuations:
"To me, it's like, I lost weight a couple of years ago and that just changed the way I ate, it changed the way I thought. I actually got too thin because I have tunnel vision.

To kick off New York Fashion Week, stars stepped out in elegant gowns and dazzling jewels at the annual amfAR New York gala at Cipriani Wall Street to support AIDS research. Crystal Renn once carried just 95 pounds on her 5'9'' frame. She had moved from her hometown down South to New York City, signed a modeling contract and spent eight years trying to be as thin as possible. After being told she wasn't thin enough to model, she began eating again and relaunched herself as a "plus-sized" model at size 14.
Now she has been spotted out and about sporting a decidedly thinner frame, though thankfully, it is not a 95-pound one. Her agent, Gary Dakin, tells ABC News, "She reintroduced exercise back into her life after finally feeling she was ready to. Hiking and yoga are part of her life now. She is healthy and feels amazing right now."
Renn also said in an interview posted at the Ford modeling agency website that she cannot maintain the plus-sized frame pictured above, right, in 2009.
"I think that by placing a title on my head,...
