Update: The latest numbers show Tom Cruise’s latest has already garnered an impressive $16 million, including Tuesday night previews. While this is below recent opening days, such as Dial of Destiny, this is noteworthy because it’s on a non-holiday Wednesday. More numbers to come!
Paramount and Skydance‘s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is looking to be another monumental hit for the over-the-top action franchise after earning $7M in preview screenings. The seventh installment of Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie’s blockbuster opened in 3,300 markets, with reach expanding to 4,000+ on Wednesday, including IMAX and Plf screenings. Sources indicate the $7M does not include money earned from Monday’s Plf screening. If you’re keeping score, 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout achieved a $6M Thursday preview take upon release.

Shea Whigham thought his pursuit of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker would forever be his toughest assignment, but then Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt quickly proved him wrong in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.
In Christopher “McQ” McQuarrie’s critically acclaimed seventh chapter of the spy action franchise, Whigham plays Jasper Briggs, a foot soldier for the CIA’s Clandestine Services, and together with his partner Degas (Greg Tarzan Davis), he’s tasked with the tall order of chasing Ethan Hunt around the world. And while his similar role in Todd Phillips’ box office smash hit Joker (2019) would seem like the inspiration for his Mission casting, it was actually his Dod bureaucrat character from the Sam Esmail-directed and Julie Roberts-led Homecoming that piqued McQ’s interest.
“Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Homecoming were nominated for some stuff at one of those functions [24th Critics’ Choice Awards]. And [McQ and I] happened to be behind each other,...

Angela Bassett joined the Mission: Impossible franchise as CIA Director Erika Sloane in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. The actress was slated to reprise the role for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, but was forced to drop out due to Covid-19 travel restrictions. Thankfully, the Mission: Impossible franchise isn’t done with Angela Bassett.
While speaking with Variety on the Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One red carpet, director Christopher McQuarrie spilled a few details on how Angela Bassett would have fit into the new film, while also teasing that we’ll be seeing her again. “It’s interesting, she was going to be the head of the CIA, she was going to be in that room with all the other heads of the intelligence community that you meet,” McQuarrie said. “And we’re not done with Angela Bassett.” McQuarrie continued, “Angela is too fabulous. When it comes to screen tests, most involve the actor(s) performing a scene to the camera. Some, like the recent Superman: Legacy screen tests, also involve full costume and makeup, but when it comes to the Mission: Impossible franchise, they want to make sure you can keep up with the action. Hayley Atwell revealed to The Telegraph that her screen test for Grace in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was two hours of stunt choreography.
Hayley Atwell performed her Mission: Impossible screen test with stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood, which she said involved “two hours of stunt choreography just to see where my natural abilities lay.” Atwell continued, “We did an unarmed combat sequence and mixed martial arts to see if I was someone who could grapple and trap or someone who was more into high kicks. [It’s to] ascertain my natural style.“

The Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One premiere is happening in Rome this afternoon, with stars, filmmakers, and press gathering to celebrate the latest chapter of the action-packed blockbuster franchise. After posing on a red carpet along the Spanish Steps, Dead Reckoning director Christopher McQuarrie began fielding questions from excited press members. Speaking with Deadline, McQuarrie commented on the likelihood of directing a film in the James Bond franchise one day.
“I like watching James Bond movies,” McQuarrie said when asked if he’d be game to help create a film in the famed 007 franchise. “The fun of those is going and getting to actually sit down and watch them, and not worry about whether or not I messed it up. I just enjoy watching them.” Adding to the conversation, McQuarrie says writing the movie and directing might not sweeten the pot. “That would come in handy,” McQuarrie said about writing the film.

Tom Cruise's Journey with "Mission: Impossible" began all the way back in 1996 with the first live-action movie adaptation of the classic spy series. Now, nearly 30 years later, Cruise is once again returning as Ethan Hunt to finish what he started all those years ago in the two-part (presumably epic) finale "Dead Reckoning." Part one hits theaters this summer, and the folks on the ground at CinemaCon just got a fresh look at some brand-new footage from the much-anticipated blockbuster. Fortunately, we're here to let you know what was on display for the crowd.

I hope Ethan Hunt knows a good biscuit recipe because Hannah Waddingham is joining the cast of Mission: Impossible 7. The Ted Lasso star is mixing it up for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, director Christopher McQuarrie revealed on Friday via Instagram. The image posted to McQuarrie’s account depicts Waddingham wearing a “boring man beige” colored cap and standing aboard what looks like an aircraft carrier or fortified military base. With a serious look, Waddingham is all business while remaining snug in her matching jacket with a fuzzy brown collar. The caption for the post includes the hashtags #Godspeed and #DeadReckoning.

Can you limit the amount of awesome in a Mission: Impossible movie? Paramount Pictures thinks so, as the studio recently said the current version of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is too long. What is this madness, you ask? Indeed, Paramount woke up on the wrong side of the money pile and didn’t know what they were suggesting. Let’s dig into this story and find out more, shall we? During the Paramount panel at the 2023 Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, & Telecom Conference on March 8th, Bob Bakish, president of Paramount Global, revealed test screening for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has begun, and the studio has thoughts about the film’s runtime.
While audience reactions to the film have been overwhelmingly positive, Paramount feels the movie still needs to be shorter. “I haven’t seen all of ‘Mi:7,’ but I’ve seen a bunch of it,...

Ethan Hunt’s next death-defying adventure won’t roll out in theaters until next summer, but Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning director Christopher McQuarrie has teased the meaning behind the vague title while speaking with Empire.
“There are many things emerging from Ethan’s past,” Christopher McQuarrie said. “‘Dead reckoning’ is a navigational term. It means you’re picking a course based solely on your last known position and that becomes quite the metaphor not only for Ethan, but several characters.” Make of that what you will, but it’s important to note that Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning is the first half of a two-parter, which McQuarries teases will be epic. “The first thing we knew was that if it’s gonna be a big two-part adventure, it’s got to be epic,” McQuarrie said. “It’s going to have to be the instalment that swallows the rest of the franchise whole.
