Flying Lotus has directed the experimental comedy Kuso and the Ozzy’s Dungeon segment of the horror anthology V/H/S/99, and next up for the rapper and filmmaker (who is a.k.a. Steven Ellison) is the sci-fi thriller Ash, starring Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). When González and Paul were cast in the film, Flying Lotus released a statement saying, “We are building something fresh and unique with Ash and having Eiza and Aaron in this world just makes it flames. They are absolute magic makers, brave and equally inspiring. All that to say… We ‘bout to kill this shit.” And apparently they did kill it, because Deadline reports that Amazon’s Prime Video has just secured the international rights to the film in a high-seven figure pact, nearing $10 million. The film is currently in post-production, so we don’t know when Prime Video will be releasing it.

Flying Lotus (aka Steven Ellison) has already made a name for himself in the music business as a Grammy Award-winning rapper, producer, and composer. But the multi-hyphenate dabbles in film production, too, like his 2017 feature debut “Kuso,” which had its world premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. There’s also his installment in the “V/H/S/99” horror anthology from last year, which he wrote, directed, and scored himself.

Aaron Paul and Eiza González are teaming up with Flying Lotus (a.k.a Steven Ellison) for a mysterious science-fiction film called Ash. Plot details remain in shadows, though some tidbits have managed to emerge from the gloom. According to Entertainment Weekly, González plays a woman who awakes to find the rest of her space station crew dead from questionable circumstances. When a man (Aaron Paul) arrives to escort her to safety, she wonders if she can trust this new and perplexing stranger. Meanwhile, Paul’s character wonders the same about the lone survivor of an interstellar massacre.
In addition to revealing to basics of the plot, EW debuted a gallery of first-look images (below) from Ash, Flying Lotus’ second feature film. “The way his brain works is quite special,” González says about Flying Lotus. “He reminds me a lot of David Fincher, who also started in music videos, as...

Nine months ago, it was announced that Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt had signed on to star in Ash, a sci-fi thriller from rapper and filmmaker Flying Lotus, a.k.a. Steven Ellison. Then, two months ago, we learned that Thompson and Gordon-Levitt both had to drop out of the project and were replaced by Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). Filming on Ash is now underway, with González and Paul in the lead roles – and Deadline has revealed that they’re being joined in the cast by Beulah Koale (Hawaii Five-o), Kate Elliott (The Gulf), and Iko Uwais of the Raid films.
González will be playing a woman who wakes on a far-flung planet to find her crew mysteriously murdered. When a man (Paul) comes to investigate the scene, she must decide if she can trust him or if he’s responsible for her series of unfortunate events.

In a cinematic age dominated by tentpoles and “influencers,” it’s refreshing to visit the world of film festivals, where one can still find content that’s authentically transgressive. I’m certain that some fans encountered the madness that is The Night of the Virgin (La Noche de Virgen) at the Fantasia Film Festival this past weekend. Roberto San Sebastián’s visceral, inverted homage to occult thrillers follows in the tradition of low-budget movies that push bodily functions and human behavior to the limit. Does that make it good? It depends on what you’re looking for. Considering the levels to which this film goes, some people would be advised against looking at all.
We begin with awkward, lonely Nico (played with a weird but oddly sweet charm by Javier Bódalo), who seeks to lose his virginity on New Year’s Eve. He’s about to give up when he...

Here's the problem with Kuso, a drugged-out horror film directed by Steve Ellison, the rapper known as Flying Lotus: There are no geysers of snot in it.
There's no caked-up ear wax, either; no rancid toe jam. But just about every other excretion and fluid a human body can produce is represented here, measurable in gallons and quarts rather than milliliters. And for each actual substance the film avoids, it has at least one imagined ooze to replace it, like the jet of viscous cream shooting out of the antenna of a giant cockroach that has just crawled...

Music producer and rapper Flying Lotus makes his feature directorial debut as Steve Ellison on the film, which depicts the aftermath of a catastrophic earthquake in Los Angeles.
Hannibal Buress, Anders Holm, Tim Heidecker and funk musician George Clinton are among the cast as Kuso recounts survival stories through a network of television screens in what the filmmakers describe as a hallucination-like effect. Eddie Alcazar served as producer.

More than a dozen people walked out of a screening of Flying Lotus’ “Kuso” at the Sundance Film Festival, Pitchfork reports. The feature debut for the musician, whose real name is Steve Ellison, “Kuso” is a psychedelic dream movie set in Los Angeles after a devastating earthquake. The film premiered last Saturday in Sundance’s Midnight section.

“Kuso’s” grotesque humor and trippy animated sequences proved to be too much for certain audience members at Sundance. Still, Lotus tweeted that the amount of people who left the screening was not significant given how many people were in attendance.
It was only like 20 people out of like 400 who walked out. Wasn’t as dramatic as they make it out to be. I tried to warn folks. https://t.co/j3GTtO906o

Last year, filmmaker Eddie Alcazar and musician Flying Lotus, also known as Steve Ellison, screened their short film “Fuckkkyouuu” at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Now, the experimental artist is returning to Park City to debut his feature film, “Kuso,” a bizarre and trippy tale starring George Clinton.
Ahead of its Sundance premiere, taking place on January 21, Deadline has shared the first trailer, in which “unbridled imaginations plunge the audience into a magical mix of filth-covered fables and hypnotic animations to reveal a film rotting from the inside out.”

Electronic artist Flying Lotus will release a new album, Until the Quiet Comes, October 2 on Warp. The follow-up to 2010’s Cosmogramma will feature guests like Erykah Badu and Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood (the latter two obviously returning the favor for Flying Lotus' remix of "Reckoner"). The musician/producer also known as Steven Ellison describes the LP as, “a collage of mystical states, dreams, sleep and lullabies,” and cites “Stereolab, Gentle Giant, and Portishead” as sonic influences. Flying Lotus will tour in support of the new record, beginning with a show with Animal Collective at the ...

Flying Lotus: Cosmogramma (Warp)
Steven Ellison, the artist known as Flying Lotus, was already widely praised for his 2008 album Los Angeles, but Cosmogramma is a jaw-droppingly awesome leap forward in imagination and creativity. In a year that's already gifted us with many fine and surprising electronica albums, in my non-specialist opinion this is the main contender for best of 2010.
I'm not exactly an aficionado of electronic dance music, because frankly I hate a lot of it. But FlyLo not only mostly avoids what I dislike (robotic and over-insistent beats, unremittingly dense textures), he even recontextualizes some aspects of styles I don't like (house, hardcore techno) so that I enjoy them. And he's all over the map here.

Flying Lotus—a.k.a. Steven Ellison—accomplishes an unusual feat with Cosmogramma: The king of L.A.’s beat scene sidesteps his own obsolescence before the possibility can even be suggested. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Ellison is pushing his art forward—unlike some of his dubstep contemporaries, he’s never gotten mired in the quest for earth-shaking bass—but his third album is one of the most musical and inventive to fly the electronica banner in years. It’s easiest to imagine Cosmogramma as one fluid mass in which effects-riddled blap, drum-and-bass, house music, and ...
