The journey may not have been mapped out exactly as fans expected, but Netflix’s anime-style Scott Pilgrim Takes Off ultimately arrives at a happy ending for its titular slacker and the girl of his dreams. (All the better that it comes after an unimaginably epic team-up of Ramona’s exes.)
But is everything really wrapped up? A mid-credits scene in Episode 8 finds Gideon/Gordon (voiced by Jason Schwartzman) menacingly suggesting that it’s “time for the real game to begin,” with Julie (Aubrey Plaza) hyping him up: “The Goose is loose! Honk honk, f–kers!”

"Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" is full of surprises. The new Netflix anime "reboot" of the familiar franchise, which features characters from Bryan Lee O'Malley's comics (O'Malley co-created the show) and voice actors from Edgar Wright's movies, takes a narrative left turn right out of the gate. Instead of winning his fight against Ramona's first evil ex Matthew Patel (Satya Bhabha), Scott (Michael Cera) loses, seemingly dying and staying dead for the majority of the season.
That isn't the only major twist in the increasingly meta series, though. Fans also get a time-traveling older Scott (Will Forte), several unlikely romantic couplings, an arc featuring a filmmaker named Edgar Wrong, and redemption stories for several major villains. In general, "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" seems to take the road less traveled by O'Malley's first version of the story, reimagining its bad...

No matter how much the mainstream pop culture scene has progressed in the last few decades or will continue to do so in the future, Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World an adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel of the same name, will forever be the epitome of coolness. It was the makers’ passion and understanding of the source material medium’s visual language, which they were able to translate perfectly into the movie, and a strikingly cool amalgamation of live-action visuals and classic video game aesthetics that made Scott Pilgrim one of the best comic-book adaptations ever, surpassing most of the mega-franchise blockbusters.
Even with the creative quotient expressed so strongly in the live-action version, there was a possibility of moving even beyond that with an animated adaptation of the Scott Pilgrim lore, as it provides a greater scope for maintaining authenticity to the source.

This post contains spoilers for "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World."
You might have varied expectations from "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" — the animated Netflix series that is based on the "Scott Pilgrim" graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley — but it is not a recreation of 2010's "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World." The film, rightfully, is beloved for various reasons throughout its journey from box-office bomb to cult classic, be it its fun videogame-style aesthetics or the unabashed celebration of its quirky, inventive core. Instead of using the film as a base to expand upon its arcade-fighting structured narrative, "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" completely flips the script and dives right into mystery-thriller territory while still retaining the quirks of the original.
The ensemble cast from the film adaptation has returned for this new adventure, lending more immersion to this fresh story from the get-go, as these are...

This article contains major spoilers for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
The cult classic movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, adapting the Scott Pilgrim comic book series created by Bryan Lee O’Malley, has been lovingly adapted into the Netflix original anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
Though boasting the cast from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World reprising their fan-favorite roles and an animation style lovingly recreating O’Malley’s own art style, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off features some significant deviations from both the comic story and cinematic adaptation. With O’Malley himself, joined by co-writer and executive producer BenDavid Grabinski (and movie director Edgar Wright), Scott Pilgrim Takes Off subverts the expectations of even the most diehard Scott Pilgrim fans, keeping the story feeling fresh and exciting without compromising what made it great in the first place.
Here are the biggest changes that Scott Pilgrim Takes Off brings to the seemingly familiar...

The following article contains spoilers for "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off."
The new Netflix anime "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" gives a whole new twist to the 2010 Edgar Wright movie "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World." (Wright is an executive producer on the anime and is called "Edgar Wrong" in the show.) As it turns out, the movie is part of the universe of the anime, and it doesn't get the story exactly right. "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" is the "real" story of the meeting of Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). Scott is kidnapped, and the gang has to deal with the evil exes and some wild circumstances -- including a movie being shot about the whole thing -- to get him back.
The story of their meeting, the search for Scott, and their reunion are covered in the eight episodes we've been given this season. However, there...

(Editor’s note: The following article contains mild overarching plot spoilers for “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.”)
After endless reboots, sequels, and revivals, fans of big movies and TV shows aren’t clamoring for more the way they once were. But with “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” Netflix and creators Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski show that a franchise reset doesn’t mean the death of creativity or more of the same; it can be a fresh opportunity for a beloved property like “Scott Pilgrim” to completely revamp itself and find a brand new audience — while still satisfying old fans.
With one general spoiler for the entire series ahead, “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is not the story of O’Malley’s six graphic novels, which wrapped up in the same year as Edgar Wright’s big-screen adaptation “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” — and it’s not that movie either. The animated series is a secret third thing,...

Do you feel that? The disturbance in the distance, in the general direction of Toronto, Canada? That's a sign that the Scott Pilgrim universe is changing. Fans have known for a while now to expect something slightly different from "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off," as Edgar Wright previously noted (via Empire) that the show "doesn't just expand the universe, but also... well, just watch it." Still, I'm not sure anyone anticipated the show being quite so much of a departure from the original, especially with all those deceptively faithful trailers Netflix dropped.
If you're somehow reading this without having watched the new season in its entirety, this is your sign to stop here and go catch up. Everyone else: let's unpack what we just saw, shall we? This epic reimagining of the Scott Pilgrim story comes straight from original comic author Bryan Lee O'Malley himself, who co-created and co-wrote the new show with BenDavid Grabinski.

Is there anyone who doesn’t know Scott Pilgrim, a quirky, adventurous 23-year-old who loves video games and comics more than anything? He never saw himself falling head over heels for someone, but when he did, everything changed. If you’re picturing him going on tranquil dates, drinking coffee from the same cup, and watching movies with chocolate popcorn, you’re dead wrong. He wanted to do these things but had a different matter to deal with first. The girl he fell for had an impressive dating portfolio; she had dated seven men, each more evil than the last. So, in order to woo the girl of his dreams, Scott Pilgrim had to fight this army of exes and survive.

When it was released in 2010, Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was considered a disappointment. It grossed less than $50 million at the box office, on a reported production budget of $85 million. And the reviews, while mostly positive, were less than enthusiastically so.
In hindsight, though, Wright’s adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s beloved 2000s series of graphic novels was simply ahead of its time. Its mash-up of genre and tone, and its ability to make absurd comic book imagery work in live-action, has earned it an ever-increasing cult following.

[This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike authorization.] [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Righteous Gemstones Season 3, Episode 9, “Wonders That Cannot Be Fathomed, Miracles That Cannot Be Counted.”] The Righteous Gemstones may have wrapped for the season, but there’s plenty to look forward to as the series was renewed for Season 4 at HBO. While it will likely be a long time until fans see the family leading sermons at their evangelical megachurch, the Gemstones dropped a few hints of where the story may go as the series continues, specifically between patriarch Eli (John Goodman) and grandson Gideon (Skyler Gisondo). After dealing with the chaos that is his three kids, Jesse (Danny McBride), Judy (Edi Patterson), and Kevlin (Adam DeVine), all season, Eli caught a glimpse of a silver lining for the future of the empire he and his late wife Aimee-Leigh (Jennifer Nettles) had built. (Credit: HBO) Although Jesse and his siblings did come together ...

Remember that short film we introduced you to last week, Exist? Yeah, it looked really badass, and now you can watch the whole thing for free at the click of your mouse!
Ninety One Pictures' Exist was written and directed by 19-year-old Tyson Johnston; it stars Curtis Simmons and Alain Singaye as two men who accidentally get caught in the middle of the world's first encounter with extraterrestrial life.
"The budget for 'Exist' was literally $0. Nothing," Johnston tells Bloody Disgusting. "A budget that small is never something to brag about, but it's great to have people backing you to make it work. My cast and crew all woke up with me at 3am, drove to downtown and started shooting. We shot in my lead actor's (Alain Singaye) car, we moved on to the Subway and shot that scene extremely quickly, then we moved to the alley way and had a few minutes there.

Thanks to technology and the internet, being discovered is much easier than it had been in the past. Anyone with the right training, programs, and talent can create something "special" that gets the right people to take note. Last week we caught wind of Tyson Johnston's upcoming short Exist, which stars Curtis Simmons and Alain Singaye as two men who accidentally stand in the middle of the world's first encounter with extraterrestrial life. While the trailer was a big tease, the poster was absolutely stunning, and the added visual effects demo reel added more fuel to the fire. We were so excited about this project that we got in touch with the young Australian director who provided Bloody Disgusting with the first ever exclusive look at his short film!!! You'll find the goods inside, along with a little big more on the short, such as the insane budget of $0.
