A few weeks ago, we posted a sneak preview of a quarantine-themes collective short spearheaded by Brian Lonano (Gwilliam). Well now, the monster is unleashed and available for public viewing! Using the 'exquisite corpse' artistic method, 21 filmmakers ffrom around the globe contributed based on a rough outline by Lonano and his co-producer Kevin Daniel Lonano. The filmmakers were not to communicate with each other, spend zero money, and make their scene within the rules of their confinement. And what better story to pick than that of a human-made monster that is shunned by the world? The result is a schmorgesbord of animation, live action, Diy, drama, comedy, tragedy, weirdness, and insanity. Homages to the book and various films, TV sitcom styling, stop motion, and...

As a film programmer, I'll admit, I'm nervous about a slew of quarantine set/related content coming my way in the next year or so. However, there are definitely some exceptions. Case in point: anything done by Brian Lonano. We at ScreenAnarchy have been fans of Lonano's excellent short films Crow Hand!!! and Gwilliam, and it looks like he has not wasted his time under lockdown. He and fellow filmmaker Kevin Daniel Lonano decided to recruit other fine filmmakers and (literally and figuratively) stich together a short. All from the confines of their quarantine, all for no money. We've got a look at the teaser, and details from the press release: Filmmakers Brian Lonano & Kevin Daniel Lonano, responsible for the cult short film Gwilliam”, sought...

‘The Eyeslicer’: Cult Variety Streaming Series Shifts Offline With New Festival and More — Exclusive
Cult variety TV show “The Eyeslicer” is gearing up for its second season, one that will move the streaming series into the terrestrial world with a brand new mini film festival, taking place in Brooklyn from September 14 to 17. The brainchild of creators Dan Schoenbrun and Vanessa McDonnell, the episodic series invites some of independent film’s most exciting directors to embrace their weird and experimental side in making a variety of short content, which is then weaved into thematic episodes.
The 13-episode Season 2 of “The Eyeslicer” will feature work from over 70 filmmakers, offerings that the co-creators describe as “a deep-dive into the strange, dark heart of our contemporary American hellscape, while also being an optimistic celebration of independent art-making within said hellscape.”
Starting with this new season, the internet will no longer be the series’ principal platform, but it will instead use a unique, zine-inspired mini-festival in Brooklyn and the...

‘Pimped’
David Barker’s psychological thriller Pimped, which explores what might happen if two men lured a woman who proved to be stronger, smarter and more cunning than them, won the Australian feature award at Monster Fest: The Homecoming.
Staged at Cinema Nova from November 22-25, the seventh edition of Monster Fest drew nearly 2,900 patrons, a record for the event.
The Golden Monster award for best feature went to director Jonas Åkerlund’s Lords of Chaos, which is set in Oslo in 1987 and stars Rory Culkin as a teenager who forms the aptly-titled black metal band Mayhem with his equally fanatical mates. They begin burning down churches throughout the countryside and stealing tombstones for their record store, leading to violence. It has yet to find a local distributor.

“The Eyeslicer,” one of independent television’s boldest players, is hitting the road this fall with a new Halloween special chock full of great mind-blowing short films, including the Sundance award-nominated “Great Choice,” starring Carrie Coon.
Featuring shorts from the festival circuit by over a dozen American filmmakers, creators Dan Schoenbrun and Vanessa McDonnell, with the support of Sante Fe-based artist collective Meow Wolf, will be bringing the feature-length creation to theaters in 15 cities for “a chaotic journey through the liminal space of the Halloween season” (per the official release), hosted by “nine amateur Elvira impersonators we found on CraigsList.”
“There are so few opportunities for short films to play on the big screen and be released in a loving and holistic way,” Schoenbrun told IndieWire via email. “We’re core believers in Dio (‘do it ourselves’) instead of Diy, and we hope that this is the main thing the...

Brian Lonano's short Crow Hand!!! has been making the rounds at film festivals over the past year, including Film4 FrightFest, SXSW, Fantasia, Stanley Film Festival ... well, I could go on. And it goes to show that you can make something amazing as long as you have a great idea, a great cast and crew, and a lot of fun. Suffice to say, it's one of the shortest, goriest (if that's a word) and funniest shorts I've seen in a long time. Enough said, watch it below!...

One of the most — if not the most — imaginative short film directors out there, Brian Lonano, is planning on upping his considerable game on his forthcoming film, Gwilliam. To be able to do so, he’s turned to IndieGoGo to help crowdfund a movie that he says will “test your stomach’s endurance and challenge your sexual functioning for weeks after viewing.”
For about 10 years, Lonano has been cranking out enormously entertaining lo-fi effects extravaganzas like 2008’s Attackazoids! and 2012’s The Transmission. His previous film, the insanely crowd-pleasing Crow Hand!!!, screened at rockin’ film fests all over the world, including SXSW and the Hollywood Underground Film Festival.
Gwilliam is being described as “a terrible, terrible love story between man and goblin” and will feature a fully functioning animatronic puppet as the lead creature. On the human side of the cast, the film will star William Tokarsky, the veteran character actor...

We love us some Brian Lonano in these parts, the cult fave short filmmaker having turned up in this pages almost right from the very beginning with such titles as Attackazoids, The Transmission and Crow Hand. Any new Lonano is a cause for celebration in our books and he's at it again, raising a mere seven grand to craft his latest short film opus - a tale of man-goblin love titled Gwilliam. Veteran character actor William Tokarsky makes up the man part of the equation with the goblin to be an animatronic puppet, which is largely where the crowd funding kicks in. Seriously, these guys are awesome. So check out Crow Hand below - available online only for the duration of the crowd funding campaign...

Embedded above is the brief, but exceptionally gory, teaser trailer for the short film Crow Hand!!!, directed by perennial Underground Film Journal favorite Brian Lonano.
The film is, from what we gather, yes, about a man who gets a crow for a hand — and disgusting mayhem ensues.
Lonano is the master of fantastic lo-fi special effects, and he appears to be returning to the excessive bloodletting of his earlier fun flicks like Attackazoids!. Sweet!

Card playing — e.g. games like poker, blackjack, gin, etc. — is an American pastime. However, in the short documentary Friday Night Magic, get introduced to a different type of card playing you may not expect adults to be obsessing over: The two decades old trading card game Magic the Gathering.
Watching other people enjoy their obsessions can be a joyous experience, and Friday Night Magic perfectly captures that spirit, catching Magic the Gathering fans as they ride the high of slapping down cards on folding tables with their like-minded brethren just for the sheer thrill of imaginary battle.
Filmed at Get There Games in Castleton Corners on Staten Island, co-directors Holly Lynn Ellis and Andrew Tank Rivara capture a diverse range of personalities from all walks of life in the greater New York area. Most compelling of the bunch is Mitchell Stein, a Manhattan attorney who has been playing for nineteen years,...

Attending a funeral of a loved one is an extremely difficult moment in any person’s life. But no funeral is quite as difficult as the one depicted in Brian Lonano’s gory short film M Is For Mourning.
The prolific and always very creative Lonano dreams up an original twist on the zombie genre and explores it with the typical sense of fun and extreme dread that the filmmaker has come to be known for.
For those wondering about the film’s title, yes, this is Lonano’s entry into the ABCs of Death 2 directing competition, the winner of which will see his or her short film included in the upcoming anthology sequel. If you enjoyed this film, go to its entry page on the ABCs of Death website and vote for it. Please do, as Lonano is an excellent filmmaker we’ve been championing for a long time...

This year will see the 9th annual edition of the Portland Underground Film Festival, which also marks it as the second edition run by filmmaker Bob Moricz and the first edition that will run for six nights at two different theaters. The fun begins at Puff’s traditional home of the Clinton Street Theater on August 21-23, then will conclude on August 24-26 at the Hollywood Theater.
Festival director Moricz, a maverick filmmaker himself, makes some bold moves with this year’s Puff with a real idiosyncratic lineup of films. For example, the opening night program — when most fests like to show the best film they can — Puff is hosting, along with Grand Detour, a special event looking for the worst films they can find in the “open mic style” showcase called War of the Worst. This will then be followed by a special program of the best Spanish underground...

It was a dark and stormy night. A little bit of absinthe combined with a rickety, old static-filled TV provides the perfect combination of spooky chills in Brian Lonano‘s The Transmission. Has an elderly man had a little too much to drink or is he actually seeing the ghost of his dead wife on his television set? Or are there more malevolent forces at play here?
Although The Transmission stars two regular collaborators with Lonano — Don Singalewitch and Holly Lynn Ellis, both of whom starred in the filmmaker’s breakout hit Attackazoids! — the film is a bit of a departure in his style.
Lonano has been highly praised for his lo-fi special effects ingenuity, which usually features heavy usage of stop-motion and regular motion puppetry. But here he seems to be going for a more ethereal and atmospheric kind of horror, which is appropriate given the ghostly subject matter.

2012 appears to be the year for younger, i.e. under 10 years old, underground fests to blow it wide open and go for broke. This week’s list is very short, but most of the articles are substantive and extremely filling, starting off with two Absolute Must Reads:
The first Absolute Must Read is David Bordwell’s essay on how to watch an “art film.” Initially, as a fan of “art” films, this sort of sounded like a strange topic and I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy the article, but — Bang, Zoom! — Bordwell’s analysis of the first 15 shots of the Spanish film Sueño y silencio by Jaime Rosales is an infinitely captivating and intriguing read that had my head swimming with ideas of how to write about films. The second Absolute Must Read is an absolutely fascinating Washington Post profile of Colorlab, the Washington, D.C. area film processing and restoration company.
