[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers from Season 1 of “The Innocents,” including the finale.]

“The Innocents,” Netflix’s British/Norwegian series that puts a supernatural twist on the star-crossed romance, concluded on quite the cliffhanger. After eight episodes in which young lovers June (Sorcha Groundsell) and Harry (Percelle Ascott) ran away from home only to discover she’s a shapeshifter, their adventures came to a violent, disastrous end.

In the action-packed episode, after secrets are revealed and sacrifices are made, two people end up dead, one person is in police custody, two people are rendered comatose, and June is mortally wounded. IndieWire spoke to the cast and crew of the series about the finale and whether or not Season 2 is in the cards. While creators Hania Elkington and Simon Duric couldn’t confirm the series will continue, their caginess was perhaps the best indicator that a second season seems likely.

Netflix might be churning out more shows than a cash-strapped 90s boyband on a reunion tour, but there’s plenty of quality in the quantity, as evidenced by this week’s brand new sci-fi drama, The Innocents.

It’s a coming-of-age, road trip mystery/ drama, centring on a pair of young runaways – Harry and June – who whisk themselves out of Yorkshire and toward London, for June’s father is trying to isolate his daughter from the world for hitherto hidden reasons.

It’s not long after the pair hit the road that they realise they’re being chased by more than just an angry, over-bearing dad. And June is about to understand why her father was such a worrier in the first place…

We were given the chance to meet the show writers Hania Elkington and Simon Duric to discuss the genesis of the show and how a coming-of-age drama...

This week the cast gathered in London for the launch of the teenage supernatural love story The Innocents, the scary new Netflix Original series. It stars Sorcha Groundsell, Petcelle Ascott, Guy Pearce, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Laura Birn, Sam Hazeldine, Lise Risom Olsen, Nadine Marshall and Trond Fausa. It was created by Simon Duric and Hania Elkington.

There may be no feeling more identifiable than those teenage years—the sensation of being out-of-place, clumsily mishandling your nascent adult powers and oftentimes stuck in the wrong skin altogether. This itchy sensation has long been the province of superhero comics and movies—it’s what fuels, say, the long-running “Spider-Man” franchise. And it’s put to clever and evocative use in Netflix’s “The Innocents,” a new series whose lead character (Sorcha Groundsell) has the power to shift between bodies; unlike most superheroes, though, she can barely control her gift and seeks to keep it hidden. Netflix received critical acclaim early this year for an eight-episode (so far) British series about teen runaways who fall for one another, “The End of the F***ing World.” The streaming service hopes for a successful repeat with “The Innocents,” and just debuted that show’s newest trailer. While “The End of the F***ing World” featured a possible-psychopath protagonist, “The Innocents” stars Sorcha Groundsell (“Clique”) as a young woman who shape-shifts, transforming herself into humans who bear little resemblance to her blue-eyed self.

Groundsell’s June McDaniel learns of her unique ability after she and fellow classmate Harry Polk (Percell Ascott) flee their stern families. Well, what’s left of their families: June’s mother, a fellow shape-shifter, abandoned her three years ago, worried about harming her child. Golden Globe nominee Guy Pearce (“Mildred Pierce”) plays Halvorson, a professor who vows to reconnect and cure mother and daughter.

Being a teenager is never easy, but when those growing pains encompass involuntary shape-shifting, it can be downright dangerous. Netflix’s new science-fiction series “The Innocents” explores one 16-year-old’s curious coming-of-age story this August.

At the Television Critics Association press tour on Sunday, Netflix brought together a panel for “The Innocents,” including co-creators and writers Hania Elkington and Simon Duric, and stars Guy Pearce, Sorcha Groundsell, and Percelle Ascott. Netflix also released a sneak peek featurette, which can be seen below.

In the eight-part series, June McDaniel (Groundsell) has had it with her controlling father, and on her 16th birthday runs away with her boyfriend Harry Polk (Ascott), the son of a police officer. But as the young star-crossed lovers soon realize, June’s father had a reason to curtail her activities. It turns out she’s a shape-shifter, which leads to some freaky and dangerous situations.

Netflix has just released an announcement teaser for their upcoming British teen supernatural drama series The Innocents. They also announced the cast of the series which includes Guy Pearce, Sorcha Groundsell (Clique) and Percelle Ascott (Wizard vs. Aliens).

The series was created by Hania Elkington and Simon Duric and it's described as "a teenage love story with supernatural twists." I'm definitly intrigued by the promo and it looks like it could end up being a great new series.

Guy Pearce stars as a mysterious character currently only known as 'Halvorson' in Netflix's new 8-part supernatural teen...

Netflix continues to add upcoming content to the massively growing streaming pipeline. Their latest order is a supernatural thriller out of the U.K.. Variety reports the untitled eight-episode series has already begun shooting in the U.K. and Norway. It was written by Hania Elkington and Simon Duric, who was a storyboard artist on award-winning Netflix original The Crown.

Farren Blackburn (Hammer of the Gods) will direct six of the eight episodes and executive produce.

Netflix has begun to ramp up its slate of original shows from around the world, and working more with local broadcasters. The Crown, out of the U.K., is its biggest-budget international show to date.

Jessica Jones is in for a bad case of déjà vu.

David Tennant, who famously and nefariously played Season 1’s Kilgrave (and was just named our Performer of the Week for Broadchurch Season 3), will reprise his role as the mind-warping villain in Season 2 of the Netflix/Marvel drama, EW.com reports.

Kilgrave was last seen in the Season 1 finale, where Krysten Ritter’s titular heroine — spoiler alert! — snapped his neck and killed him.

Netflix continues its expansion into original young adult series with a pickup of an eight-episode British drama. Created and written by Hania Elkington and Simon Duric, the untitled series is described as a teenage love story with supernatural twists. Hamish Moseley joins Altitude; first titles announced; “substantial” slate planned.

Will Clarke’s Altitude Film Entertainment has launched film distribution arm Altitude Film Distribution.

Former Momentum executive Hamish Moseley has joined the outfit as head of distribution.

Moseley spent nearly ten years at Momentum Pictures, stepping down as svp of theatrical sales in April. Prior to Momentum, he spent two years as a film buyer for Cineworld.

Clarke and Andy Mayson head parent company Altitude Film Entertainment which now comprises Altitude Film Production, Altitude Film Sales and Altitude Film Distribution.

First films on the slate will be Asif Kapadia’s Untitled Amy Winehouse Documentary and Morgan Neville’s Sundance documentary 20 Feet From Stardom, a tribute to backup vocalists, which has already grossed well in the Us.

Also on the slate is horror-thriller The Loch, co-produced by Altitude Film Production with James Watkins and co-written by Watkins with Simon Duric who will also direct. The film is...

More details regarding The Loch have come in by way of a lengthy synopsis.

Until now, we've simply had a logline to go on for this Loch Ness monster thriller.

The film is co-written by The Woman in Black's director James Watkins who teams with writer-director Simon Duric.  Peter Mullan is expected to star, should the film get off of the ground.  We've been reporting on this title for over a year now and the last significant update came in May with Mullan's involvement.

Is the water-dwelling beast known as Nessie just an old salt's tale, or could there be something real to the legend of the mythical beast? That's the question posed by the new film looking to delve into those waters of mystery.

According to Screen Daily, director James Watkins (The Woman In Black) has a joint company with Altitude, which is launching its first production, The Loch, written by Watkins and Simon Duric. Watkins was initially attached to direct, but now Duric will take the helm. Peter Mullan (pictured; War Horse, Trainspotting) has come on board to lead the cast.

“The film is a character-driven horror thriller that is an update on the Loch Ness monster myth. The story follows a family hiding their own secrets who encounter dark forces on a weekend holiday near Loch Ness.”

Loch Ness monster shenanigans are coming via a film called The Loch, which we first brought to your attention a year ago.

At the time, it was revealed The Woman in Black's James Watkins was teaming with Simon Duric to pen a thriller about the Loch Ness monster for Altitude Entertainment.

Duric will make his directorial feature debut and, today, the first cast member was revealed.

Altitude is bringing five new films to Cannes:

Son Of A Gun – an epic crime thriller directed by Julius Avery, best known for the Cannes award-winning shortJerrycan, and starring Ewan McGregor (The Impossible, August: Osage County), Alicia Vikander (A Royal Affair, The Fifth Estate, The Seventh Son) and Brenton Thwaites (Maleficent, Oculus,). The high-profile film is a visceral, tautly paced heist thriller, centred on a complex relationship between Australia’s public enemy number one and his young protégé. Started shooting on 25 February in Western Australia. Currently in post-production.

Catch Me Daddy - a taut and uncompromising thriller inspired by the classic character-driven thrillers of the 1970’s and early 80’s (Badlands, The Getaway, Deliverance, Blood Simple, The Friends Of Eddie Coyle). Award-winning commercials and music video director Daniel Wolfe makes his feature debut with a storyabout a couple on the run from the type of violence and crime that the law cannot reach, and overturns the conventions of the thriller genre, with a female lead stepping up as the heroine of the piece. Started shooting on 18 March in the UK. Currently in post-production.

Outpost 37 - a high concept, sci-fi, action film marking the directorial debut of La-based director and Visual FX maestro Jabbar Raisani (Game of Thrones, Iron Man, Predators). Jason Newmark (Triangle, Severance) and Laurie Cook produce for Bigscope alongside Trevor Engelson for Underground Entertainment (Remember Me). Will Clarke, Andy Mayson and Mike Runagall executive produce for Altitude. Filming starts on 14 May. Co-written by Raisani with Blake Clifton, the film centres on a documentary crew as they follow an elite unit of marines, tasked with protecting mankind in the aftermath of a devastating alien invasion. As they reach the world’s most dangerous outpost they make a terrifying discovery; the first invasion was just the beginning.

The Good People - the highly anticipated original dark and malevolent fairytale chiller to be directed by Corin Hardy, a Screen International Star of Tomorrow and director of brilliant short films and music videos (The Prodigy, Keane, Paolo Nutini). Scientist, Adam, moves with his family to an ancient Millhouse in the Irish countryside. But what seems a rural idyll soon becomes a terrifying fight for survival when the couple comes under attack from horrifying and demonic creatures that lurk in the woods, hell bent on destroying them all. Co-written by Hardy with Olga Barreneche, Joe Neurauter and Felipe Marino of Occupant Entertainment (The Wackness and All The Boys Love Mandy Lane) produce. Altitude is handling international sales and financial packaging on this project.

Kill Your Friends - a satirical and hysterically funny evisceration of the music industry set against the iconic backdrop of Cool Britannia and the Britpop era of late 1990’s London, based on John Niven’s cult novel which he is adapting for the screenplay. BAFTA award-winner Owen Harris (Misfits, Holy Flying Circus) is to direct withRafe Spall (Prometheus,Life of Pi, I Give It A Year) cast in the lead role. Gregor Cameron is producing alongside Altitude. The film is set to start shooting this summer.
