2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards: ‘The Lost Daughter’ Takes the Top Prize (Complete Winners List)
The 37th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards were handed out Sunday at the Santa Monica Pier, with comedy power couple Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally serving as hosts.
There weren’t too many surprises throughout the night. Troy Kotsur won the first award of the evening, Best Supporting Male Actor for “Coda,” very much as predicted. Taylour Paige took home Best Female Lead Actor, for “Zola,” while Simon Rex, of “Red Rocket,” walked away with Best Male Lead. Ruth Negga won Best Supporting Female Actor for “Passing,” beating out Jessie Buckley from “The Lost Daughter.”
But Maggie Gyllenhaal’s adaptation of the Elena Ferrante book won the three other categories in which it was nominated — Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Feature — and was the night’s biggest victor. Gyllenhaal gave three effusive thank you speeches, spreading her appreciation around to her cast, crew, financiers, publicist, husband and mother. “Women in film!

Exclusive: IFC Films has acquired North American rights to The Novice, the first feature from writer-director Lauren Hadaway, which will debut in select theaters, digital platforms and VOD on December 17.
The festival favorite follows queer college freshman Alex Dall (Orphan‘s Isabelle Fuhrman), who joins her university’s rowing team and undertakes an obsessive physical and psychological journey to make it to the top varsity boat.
Hadaway based the thriller on personal experience as a competitive collegiate rower. With it, she poses provocative questions about the expectations imposed on young women in America, and the psychologically damaging effects of a culture that encourages the pursuit of being “the best” no matter the cost.
Amy Forsyth, Dilone, Kate Drummond, Jonathan Cherry and Charlotte Ubben round out the cast of the film, which premiered to critical acclaim at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival, winning the top prize of Best U.S. Narrative Feature,...

Before the tragic sudden death of John Hughes this past summer four filmmakers from Toronto -- Michael Facciolo (producer) , Kari Hollend (producer), Lenny Panzer (co-creator) and Matt Austin Sadowski (director) -- spent four years making a tribute documentary about the reclusive director, nabbing interviews with some of the main actors from his films (Andrew McCarthy, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson to name a few), directors who have been influenced by his iconic work (Kevin Smith and Jason Reitman) and traveling to Illinois last year to find Hughes. After Hughes's death the project suddenly became a hot commodity and got a worldwide deal with Alliance Films which released the film, Don't You Forget About Me, on DVD today. Learn more about the...

The Canadian makers of a documentary inspired by film director John Hughes must be having mixed feelings about his recent tragic death.
As big fans of Hughes' films from the 1980s (which included The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and Ferris Bueller's Day Off) Matt Austin, Kari Hollend, Mike Facciolo and Lenny Panzer would have been saddened by the recent news that the director had passed away from a heart attack at the age of only 59. According to Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper, however, something positive came out of the event for the four men. The resulting upwelling of interest in Hughes has led Alliance Films to sign a deal with them to distribute their independently-made documentary, Don't You Forget About Me. The film focuses on the director's portrayal of teenage life.
"It's a very uncomfortable feeling and you can't help but feel guilty," said Hollend, who is one of the film's producers.

A docu-film about the late director John Hughes will be released internationally. The low-budgeted "Don't You Forget About Me" has nabbed a distributorship shortly after the filmmaker's death last week.
Variety said that the film has been acquired by the Alliance Films of Montreal after Hughes' death Thursday.
The film, made without public funding, is a 75-minute road trip search for the reclusive filmmaker. Austin-Sadowski and producers Kari Hollend, Mike Facciolo and Lenny panzer drive to Illinois to try to find the mastermind behind teen cult classics such as "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "The Breakfast Club," and "Pretty in Pink."
It includes interviews with Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Mia Sara, Kelly LeBrock, and Andrew McCarthy.

According to reports from TorontoFilm.Net, a new 75-minute, low-budget feature doc, Don't You Forget About Me, focusing on late writer/director John "Ferris Bueller" Hughes, has been snapped up by distributor Alliance Films of Montreal. Toronto film-maker Matt Austin-Sadowski says the feature looks at the life and work of Hughes, creator of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles, lensed during a road trip in which Austin-Sadowski and producers Kari Hollend, Mike Facciolo and Lenny Panzer drove to Illinois to track down the reclusive director. Actors interviewed in the doc include Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Mia Sara, Kelly LeBrock and Andrew McCarthy. Hughes' 'muse', actress Molly Ringwald, who shares a February 18 birthday with the director (as well as yours truly), reportedly refused to participate in the project. John Hughes died Thursday afternoon, and by midday Friday, the producers of 'Don't You Forget About Me,' a documentary about the director and his influence on Hollywood, had found a distributor in Alliance Films International. Matt Austin and Kari Hollend discuss what happened last week in this CNN video, and their trailer for the film appears below. Matt and Kari actually interviewed me for the project, back in November 2006. I don't expect to be in the final cut, as this was my very first time on-camera (aw!) and I'm pretty sure I couldn't stop rambling about how the girl in Ferris Bueller's Day Off who lazily blew an enormous gum bubble in class was, like, a totally realistic depiction of high school. (Wait, never mind. This is a brilliant observation and should definitely appear in the film.) Anyway, I loved how they set up that particular shoot in...
