Journey’s Bassist Ross Valory Opens Up About the Band’s Saga — And His Adventurous Solo Album
Image
Ross Valory has dreamed of making a solo album ever since he started gigging around San Francisco in the late Sixties, but other projects kept getting in the way. He was in the process of amassing original songs in 1971 when the Steve Miller Band brought him into the fold to play bass on Rock Love. Later, he teamed up with ex-members of Santana to form the Golden Gate Rhythm Section. Within a few months, they changed their name to Journey.

Valory was a near-constant presence over the past 50 years of Journey,...

George Tickner, Founding Journey Guitarist, Dead at 76
Image
George Tickner, a co-founding member of legendary classic rock act Journey, has died at the age of 76, according to a social media post made by the band’s guitarist Neal Schon.

“Rest peacefully, Dr. George Tickner. You will be missed immensely,” Schon posted on Facebook.

Schon also posted: “Dear George … ‘Of a Lifetime’ is still one of my favorite songs ever. Rip brother God Speed.”

Journey formed in 1973 with a lineup featuring Schon, Tickner — brought in by Journey manager Herbie Herbert, who road-managed Tickner’s previous band Frumious Bandersnatch — along with bassist Ross Valory, singer Gregg Rolie, and drummer Prairie Prince (later replaced by Aynsley Dunbar).

While Journey are best known for their FM classic rock hits, the group actually played progressive rock early in its career, prior to singer Steve Perry joining the band. Journey’s 1975 self-titled debut is held in high regard among prog circles, and it’s...

Steve Perry Withdraws Lawsuit Against Journey Over Band’s Trademarks
Image
Former Journey frontman Steve Perry has withdrawn his lawsuit against his ex-bandmates over the trademarks to 20 of the group’s biggest songs.

In Sept. 2022, Perry, who permanently exited the band in 1998, filed legal papers to prevent Freedom Jn LLC — a company headed by Journey’s Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain which holds the Journey trademarks — from using those trademarks on apparel and other merchandise.

Perry claimed that he, Cain and Schon had an agreement that required unanimous consent for any business decision related to the trademarks and that he had not authorized said consent.

Image
Rolling Stone‘s interview series King for a Day features long-form conversations between senior writer Andy Greene and singers who had the difficult job of fronting major rock bands after the departure of an iconic vocalist. Some of them stayed in their bands for years, while others lasted just a few months. In the end, however, they all found out that replacement singers can themselves be replaced. This edition features former Creedence Clearwater Revisited singer John Tristao.

John Tristao caught so many Creedence Clearwater Revival shows in the band’s...

Legendary musician Carlos Santana collapses on stage, is reportedly in good condition.
Image
Carlos Santana, the Grammy-winning 74-year-old founder of the group Santana, collapsed on stage during a concert in Michigan on Tuesday night. He was taken from the Pine Knob Music Theatre, an outdoor shed 40 miles outside of Detroit, to a nearby hospital in Clarkston. His manager released a statement saying that he is staying at the facility “for observation and is doing well.”

Santana’s Wednesday gig at Star Lake in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania has been postponed.

Images and video of Ems workers rushing the scene made their way to social media late Tuesday. After a few moments of confusion, the iconic guitarist was carried away but shielded by a curtain. He later waved to fans, who cheered the musician.

Ringo Rocks: 30 Years Of The All Starrs Raises Money For Charity
Image
It’s been three decades since Ringo Starr founded his All Starr supergroup and took the stage with some of rock and roll’s biggest luminaries, creating an exceptional legacy of performances of some of the greatest hits of all time culled from Starr’s extraordinary catalog as a solo artist and as Beatle, as well as the All Starr Band members’ substantive songbook.

In celebration of this milestone, and just in time for the holiday season, a new limited-edition retrospective hardcover book titled “Ringo Rocks: 30 Years Of The All Starrs,” will be sold online exclusively beginning Wednesday, December 16 at juliensauctions.com.

This not to be missed commemorative photo memoir features some never-before-seen photos of the All Starr Band’s 30 record-setting years in the spotlight and life on the road, compiled by Henry Diltz and Jill Jarrett (who have followed Ringo Starr’s All Starr career since 1989), as well as...

Gregg Rolie
You might not know the name Gregg Rolie, but you definitely know his music. Not only did he sing “Black Magic Woman,” “Evil Ways,” “Oye Como Va,” and all the other early Santana classics as the group’s original lead vocalist, but he went on to form Journey with Santana guitarist Neal Schon. He was their keyboardist and lead singer on the first three albums before Steve Perry took over as frontman in 1978. He then stuck around for the next two years, playing keyboards on massive hits like “Lights,” “Wheel...

Steve Perry emerged from two decades of seclusion in August with new single “No Erasin'” off his upcoming album Traces. But in new interviews, Perry revealed that after losing his girlfriend Kellie Nash to cancer in 2012, he decided it was time to face the world again.

Steve's Favorite New Jazz Albums of 2016
Okay, it's time for me to stop trying to listen to more 2016 albums and just wrap up this list. In the past I would split my jazz list into a new releases part dedicated to current recordings and a historical part combining first releases of archival material with reissues. This year I'm skipping reissues, partly because some projects were so gargantuan that little guys like me weren't serviced with them, partly because the vinyl renaissance means everything is being reissued at once, and partly because so much stuff is just rehashing the same material in new packaging, with or without a gimmick or a little additional material added. So first releases of archival material are lumped in here. Maybe that's not entirely fair to the current guys, but on the other hand I don't include many archival items on my list.

1. Matthew Shipp & Bobby Kapp: Cactus (Northern Spy)

Two generations...

Carrie Fisher, John Ritter, and Ringo Starr in Ringo (1978)
Ringo's Going Back On Tour
Carrie Fisher, John Ritter, and Ringo Starr in Ringo (1978)
His days of drumming for The Beatles are long behind him, but Ringo Starr has adopted a new hobby over the past two decades: Bringing musicians together and going on tour with them.

Starr has announced the lineup and summer tour dates for this year's All Starr Band, which will feature Todd Rundgren, Gregg Rolie (of Santana fame), Steve Lukather (Toto), Richard Page (Mr. Mister), saxophonist Mark Rivera and drummer Gregg Bissonette.

The tour, in support of Starr's new album Ringo 2012, will begin on June 14 in Niagara Falls and end on July 21 in Los Angeles.

Although fellow former Beatles member Paul McCartney's album Kisses On The Bottom hit stores on Tuesday, Starr insists their solo careers are hardly competitive.

"In all honesty, we had dinner just after Christmas together and I didn't know he had [an album] coming out," Starr told Spinner. "I didn't know that it was going to come...
