The moment a group of Cornish fishermen and lifeboatmen turned their charitable crooning on the shore of Port Isaac into a Universal Music record deal that saw them debut in the top ten was the moment producers started falling over themselves to sign the life rights for a cinematic adaptation. And just as the band subsequently released another two collections of sea shanties and traditional folk songs despite their original one-album contract, it appears that Chris Foggin’s feel-good dramedy will soon receive its own sequel. I guess that’s the power of Fisherman’s Friends and their inspiring bond steeped in history, work ethic, family, and friendship. They’re a band that’s as easy to underestimate as they are to champion once they’ve proven you wrong because the music doesn’t lie.

"What I don't understand, is why anyone would buy a record sung by ten hairy-ass fisherman?" Ent. Film Distributors in the UK has debuted an official trailer for a dramedy titled Fisherman's Friends, based on the true story of a group of traditional folk singers from Cornwall. It's about a music exec from London who travels up to Cornwall in hopes of signing them, only to discover a group of shanty singing fishermen who aren't interested in fame and fortune. "As he's drawn deeper into the traditional way of life he's forced to re-evaluate his own integrity and ultimately question what success really means." In the real world, they went on to release a few albums that became huge UK hits anyway. Fisherman's Friends stars James Purefoy, Tuppence Middleton, Christian Brassington, Daniel Mays, David Hayman, Noel Clarke, Sarah Winter, Maggie Steed, and Christopher Villiers. Looks like a bunch of "shanty singing fishermen" fun.

Elections! Leeches! Wrestling! Grief! This week’s Poldark had it all.
This Poldark review contains spoilers.
Poldark Season 4, Episode 2
It’s been too long since we’ve had a traditional folk celebration on Poldark. Countryfolk skipping up to a wet log and whacking it with a ribbon on a stick used to be this show’s lifeblood, back when it was all about copper auctions and Dwight overarm bowling oranges into the mouths of the needy. In the first series, not an episode went by without at least one slow-motion scene of gap-toothed peasants cheerfully doing the polka around a giant, burning wicker man.
The Feast of St Sawle then, was a welcome distraction from all the grief of late. It provided not only be-ribboned sticks and the vocal stylings of Mc Tholly (no phoneme left behind), but also a wrestling match between good and evil. Everybody who was anybody was there.

Poldark is back, in a grave series opener that’s high on dramatic stakes and low on laughs.
This Poldark review contains spoilers.
Poldark Season 4 Episode 1
We return to Poldark in uncertain times. War is raging. Parliament is dissolved. The peasants are revolting. And Ross and Demelza are spending a great deal of time frowning worriedly into the middle distance. In that middle distance, both are watching the same scene - Hugh and Demelza, Demelza and Hugh cooing like collared doves and nuzzling their beaks into each other’s neck feathers. To Ross the vision is a torment; to his wife it’s a fond, if ambivalent, memory.
Not content with their sandy session being conscribed to memory, Hugh’s after a repeat performance and has been writing Demelza plaintiff poetry to that effect. He’d better make the next one a haiku though, because the young...

Nevertheless, help it George does. The cost of his imagined humiliation this week was the financial ruin of seventy-five mining families. To spite Ross Poldark, who’d spent the week setting up a pop-up budget supermarket and giving no thought whatsoever to Trenwith’s odious master, George closed down Wheal Leisure.

The modern British gangster movies are strange beasts, and I admit I do have a weakness for them. With acting that is often questionable and stories that tend to be on the sillier side of crime thrillers they have a charm that can even survive a Danny Dyer starring role (that was a joke, don’t bite my head off). The Smoke, to be fair, only takes a gentle stroll into the British gangster movie style, though it does feature some actors that you’ve seen in them before, and more bizarrely more than its fair share of soap stars too.

You won’t be surprised to learn that in his new movie “Hummingbird”, Jason Statham plays a badass who uses his badass skills to kick bad guys in badass ways. Though in this one there’s apparently a bit more character and pathos that goes deeper than “he was wronged and now he’s going to kill you” logline you usually find in your average Statham movie. This is probably thanks to writer/director Steven Knight (“Eastern Promises”). But don’t take my word for it. Check out the first UK trailer for Statham’s “Hummingbird” and feel free to decide for yourself. Living homeless after going on the run from a military court-martial, Joey Jones (Statham) is a damaged ex-special forces soldier trapped in London’s criminal underworld. But when opportunity enables him to assume another man’s identity, he is transformed into an avenging angel. Also starring Vicky McClure,...

The official teaser trailer for The Body, starring Alfie Allen of "Game of Thrones," arrived online; and we have it right here for your viewing pleasure. Check out the sly peek into this short right here.
In addition to Allen, The Body stars Hannah Tointon ("The Inbetweeners"), Jack Gordon (Panic Button) and Christian Brassington (Burke and Hare). It was co-written and produced by Paul Fischer for Ten Cent Adventures (Radioman) and co-written and directed by Paul Davis (Him Indoors).
"It's a movie about facades and how we perceive things," director Davis said. "You never really know what's real and what isn't with the characters in this, and it's made all the more ambiguous under the disguise of Halloween - where everybody is somebody else. We live in such a sophisticated age, which tends to bring out the cynic in a lot of people. If we saw someone dragging a body along the street,...

The German Short Film. Nick Ryan‘s The German (2008) short film stars Toby Kebbell, Christian Brassington, Glenn Mullins, Gary Murphy, and David Ryan. The German‘s plot synopsis: “November 1940, during the greatest conflict man has ever known, an epic duel unfolds between two ace pilots, each willing to take the match to it’s ultimate conclusion. Unknown to the pilots is a fate neither has considered.”
This short film immediately reminded me of the Paths of Hate (2010) short film. Since The German came out before that short film, perhaps it inspired it. Paths of Hate is far better though in my opinion, but The German has a better ending.
The German is a testament to the level of work being done in the short film format these days.

Back in 2005, the new series of Doctor Who, aired a fairly good, notable episode called “Dalek”. It focused on a single dalek, retrieved by an egotistical man who wants to use it to his own ends, who is isolated from the rest of his “species”, believes himself to be the only survivor of his race, and is pitied by the Doctor’s fairly new, female companion.
“The Silver Turk,” one of the most recent audios by Big Finish, is a fairly good episode. It focuses on a single cyberman, retrieved by an egotistical man who wants to use it to his own ends, who is isolated from the rest of his “species”, believes himself to be the only survivor of his race that’s currently on Earth, and is pitied by the Doctor’s new female companion.
So, yeah. It’s got that vibe going on.
