Wyatt Ellis is only 15, but the mandolin prodigy is making quite a splash on the bluegrass world and appearing alongside some pillars of the genre — Bobby Osborne, Sierra Hull, Sam Bush, Marty Stuart, and Ronnie McCoury, among them.
“The bluegrass community has always been welcoming to young and upcoming musicians,” Ellis tells Rolling Stone. “And that’s a huge part of my story and how I got into the music.”
The common denominator with all those names listed is that they’re each phenomenal mandolin players — icons of the genre.

Bluegrass pioneer Earl Scruggs was born 100 years ago this week, and the tributes to the banjo picker have been many. On Friday, Tony Trischka, himself a banjo disciple of Scruggs, released a rollicking version of “Brown’s Ferry Blues,” a song dating back to the Thirties, that features an array of A-list players including Billy Strings, Béla Fleck, and Sam Bush.
Written by long-ago Grand Ole Opry stars the Delmore Brothers, “Brown’s Ferry Blues” features Strings on lead vocals, with Fleck and Trischka delivering a pair of banjo breakdowns.

It’s one of the first cold fall nights in the mountains of East Tennessee and Lindsay Lou is tightening her winter coat as she prepares to take the outdoor stage at CaveFest, an Americana and bluegrass gathering held southeast of Nashville at the Caverns, an underground venue with an aboveground amphitheater.
“I feel more deeply connected with myself and everyone around me,” the singer-songwriter tells Rolling Stone backstage. “Even if my life blew up for a few years.”

Dierks Bentley and Billy Strings hunker down to greet the end of days with some bluegrass jams and weed in the new song “High Note,” a lively romp from Bentley’s upcoming new album.
A brisk, rumbling acoustic guitar riff kicks things off, and the band — featuring Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, and Bryan Sutton — gets into gear. Bentley senses the possibility of apocalyptic doom and says he has no plans to hide in a bunker. “I’ll be holed up in the basement with two very special guests/A big...

Dierks Bentley’s collaborative performance with Larkin Poe and the War and Treaty at the 2021 ACM Awards was too good to be a one-off.
“It’d be kind of hard to suck with that band onstage with you,” he told Rolling Stone during tour rehearsals this spring. “I was like the carpet in Big Lebowski: just trying to tie the room together. We got done playing that and I was like, ‘We have to do something else,’ because it was too much fun.”

Eric Lindberg and Doni Zasloff, the core of the bluegrass group Nefesh Mountain, had just returned from a family trip to Poland and the Ukraine in 2018 when news broke about a mass shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. Still emotionally raw from visiting their families’ hometowns in the Carpathian Mountains and paying their respects at sites of the Holocaust, the husband-and-wife songwriters — both of whom are Jewish — were left reeling by the deadly hate crime that claimed 11 lives.

When guitarist Tony Rice died on Christmas Day in his North Carolina home, bluegrass music bade farewell to a second-generation star who expressed his music in modern terms and embraced bluegrass’s potential to both blend with and influence other genres.
“The music business has lost a true innovator,” says Jimmy Gaudreau, who played mandolin with Rice in the Eighties and Nineties. “As far as the guitar players of today, they name Tony Rice as the number one influence.”

Maybe Hiss Golden Messenger said it best, in a tweet after Friday night’s tribute to Jerry Garcia at downtown Los Angeles’ Theatre at Ace Hotel (at which lead singer Mc Taylor was one of the performers): “Seeing Stephen Malkmus, Benmont Tench and David Hidalgo onstage together creates a hugely enjoyable cognitive dissonance.” In this particular Dead-related case, “cognitive dissonance” was not even intended as a synonym for tripping, but just the fun of seeing celebrity fans from different disciplines focus attention on some of Garcia’s under-celebrated sides. At the end of the three-hour show, you could even say: What a long trip of strange bedfellows it’s been.

For the inconceivable fourth-straight year, married couple Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert took home their respective Vocalist of the Year awards at the Cma Awards. Keep reading to find out who else took home an award!
Hosts Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley started country music's biggest awards show with an opening that the nation will be buzzing about in the morning.
The two first addressed feuds in country music by delivering a duet of "Why Can't We Be Friends?" and then decided to lightheartedly start their own outrageous feuds (e.g., Brad Paisley vs. Kenny Rogers; Darius Rucker vs. Julianne Hough).
The well-orchestrated comedy skit continued with a satire of the rocky launch of Obamacare via a spin on George Strait's "Amarillo By Morning" ("Obamacare by morning, over six people served"), and an applause for Taylor Swift for keeping her clothes on unlike her female pop music counterparts.

We have to give Taylor Swift some major props. During Wednesday (Nov. 6) night's 2013 Cma Awards, she performed a lovely acoustic version of her hit song "Red." It was pretty and quiet and super amazing. What made it super amazing?
Taylor had probably The Ultimate Country Music Backup Band ever. Ever. And to have the ability to have this kind of band backing her up at her age, and at this early place in her career in Nashville is pretty amazing. Where does she go from here? Seriously?
Alison Krauss - Lead singer of Alison Krauss and Union Station as well as her albums with rock superstar Robert Plant and half of the "O Brother Where Art Thou?" soundtrack.
Vince Gill - With over 40 charted country singles in 30 years of music-making, Vince Gill has earned 20 Grammy Awards, more than any other male country music artist. He's Vince Gill. Vince. Gill. And...
