He was a novelist and teacher. His twin brother, Richard Bausch, is also a novelist. They enlisted in the Air Force and served for four years, teaching survival tactics. They attended Northern Virginia Community College before transferring to George Mason University, where both won top writing awards. Robert stayed at GMU for a master's degree in English and a master of fine arts in creative writing.
