Australian bottle rocket Jordana Beatty - who debuted in Superman Returns - gives an impressive performance as the titular tomboy. Heather Graham is also on hand as her ditzy Aunt Opal, who comes to stay with the grumpy Judy and sets out to help her have the most not bummer summer ever, even after all her buddies have abandoned her. Cue mishaps, mayhem and the most disgusting 'fondue' you've ever seen.

Chicago – With 2012 staring us in the face like a bad movie concept (oops), it’s time to go over the worst films of 2011, if only to purge the refuse from our souls. If you think film critiquing is martinis with F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald – or the plot to “Midnight in Paris” – then strap in and read on.
If we were to add up the percentages of the 2011 film release year, the larger number of star ratings would fall in the middle to horrible category of the please-please-me range, but that is the nature of populist movie-making. The film business is about demographics and butts-in-the-seats, and what’s on screen – as long as it has a vampire in it – has become irrelevant. Can we all handle that truth? Thank goodness for awards season.
But I digress. Just missing the 10th spot was “Country Strong,” “Arthur,” “Hop,” “Your Highness,” “Take Me Home Tonight” and “The Smurfs.

(Steven Soderbergh, 2011, Us) Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jennifer Ehle. 106 mins
Much as he did with Traffic, Soderbergh connects the dots of a global issue and makes it look like something authoritative and contemporary rather than a celebrity disaster movie. Here it's a viral pandemic, briskly tracked in forensic detail and techno-backed montages. The response from health authorities and the panicked populace is all too credible, though once the dots are connected, we're too freaked out to remember why we were supposed to be watching.
We Need To Talk About Kevin (15)
(Lynne Ramsay, 2011, UK/Us) Tilda Swinton, Ezra Miller. 112 mins
Swinton's fine performance and Ramsay's visual intelligence add up to a devastating portrait of motherhood. After a high-school shooting, a mother's existence becomes a living hell.

Sugar, sugar, sugar and more sugar. Having a middle-aged male review this could be pointless, but it's amiable enough
A tweenie movie that is entirely silly and cheerfully inane at all times: its primary colours pop like bubblegum. This is the equivalent of eating a tonne of Haribo while mainlining Ben and Jerry's. Jordana Beatty stars as Judy Moody, a feisty girl trying to avoid enduring a totally bummer summer with just her doofus brother for company. Having a middle-aged male review it is probably ridiculous. So is asking its target audience to listen to a middle-aged male's opinions on the subject. For what it's worth, I found it oddly amiable some of the time, and better done than our recent British equivalent Horrid Henry. It will pass the time for many kids this half-term, while the grownups zone out.

Movie of the Week
The Big Year
The Stars: Owen Wilson, Jack Black, Steve Martin
The Plot: Three avid bird watchers compete to spot the rarest birds in North America at a prestigious annual event.
The Buzz: I was completely unaware of this film until about two weeks ago, when I first saw the trailer. Seems it snuck up on everyone, as there hasn’t been much buzz about it at all. Owen Wilson, Jack Black and Steve Martin are all, of course, potential of amazing comedy cinema, and it’ll be interest to see how the three play off of each other. If the script is good, these three guys will do it justice. I’m...

I love Heather Graham. She has more of an effervescent quality than an acting quality, but that.s perfect when you.re playing a leading role in low-budget, low-expectation children.s movies based on popular kiddy literature. In Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, Graham plays Aunt Opal, a free-spirited Aunt-playing-nanny who hangs out with young charge Moody (Jordana Beatty) as they get up to some ridiculous midsummer nonsense. Even with low expectations, Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer bombed at the box office, not managing to even cover its fairly small $20 million budget. However, with its popular titular character, I expect the film to do well on Redbox and with library waiting lists. I.m sure Fox Home Entertainment is hoping for at least that. The company will release Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer onto Blu-Ray and DVD on October 11. For a movie that didn...

When her best-laid plans for a summer full of fun go comically awry, an imaginative young girl creates her own vacation adventure in Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, which stars Jordana Beatty, Heather Graham, Parris Mosteller and Jaleel White.
Judy Moody (Jordana Beatty) is planning the most super-duper, double-rare summer vacation ever with best friends Rocky and Amy. Except that it turns out Rocky is going to circus camp to learn to tame lions, and Amy is headed off to Borneo with her mom to save a lost tribe while Judy stays home with her pesky little brother Stink and second-best friend Frank Pearl.
Just when she thinks things are as rotten as they can be, her parents announce that they will be going to California and Judy will have to stay behind with her Aunt Opal (Heather Graham – Hangover), who she’s never even met! It looks...

The J.J. Abrams hype of “Super 8” worked. Paramount Pictures’ “Super 8” grossed $37 million this weekend to place itself in the top position after certain viral mystery marketing for the film. It was better than the studio’s projections from a $25-$30 million weekend opening. The J.J. Abrams-directed and Steven Spielberg-produced film has a B+ CinemaScore—indicating it may have staying power in the theaters. “Super 8” starred Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka, and Kyle Chandler. It revolved around a group of kids investing strange occurrences in their town after witnessing a train crash. Two films passed the $200 million total gross mark this year. Third place Warner Brothers’ comedy sequel “The Hangover 2” earned another $18.5 million, a drop of 41 percent. Its total reached $216.5 million domestically in its third week of release. And fifth place Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” received $10.8 million, a drop of 39.6 percent,...

The reviews are out for "Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer," a new kids movie release starring Heather Graham and newcomer Jordana Beatty. And they are not complimentary.
Kyle Smith of the New York Post writes, "Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer" is sure to appeal to kids of all ages from 6 to 9 who are female and have no taste or sense of humor."
The Boston Herald's James Verniere says, "Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer begins with bedazzled credits, and it's downhill from there."
Scott Chitwood of Coming Soon writes, "If you need to entertain kids for a couple of hours this summer, then Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer fits the bill. But if you're looking to be entertained as well, you may want to select another film."
Hollywood.com's Thomas Leupp says, "It's super-awful-crapadelic!"
We thought there was more of a sliding scale for kids movies.

To absolutely no one's surprise, Hollywood has plumbed the vacuous depths of the children's lit market and come up with yet another hopeful franchise. Obviously, author Megan McDonald meant for her girl with the tangled red hair, the so-called "heroine" of the Judy Moody book series, to evoke aspects of both Pippi Longstocking and Ramona Quimby. This adaptation, directed by John Schultz (who helmed the similarly frenetic Aliens in the Attic), manages to stuff a whole lot of turbulent action into this movie despite the fact that there's nothing going on in the process. It's not even loosely controlled -- it's completely uncontrolled and exceedingly loud to boot. For the simple reason that it's not only a very boring movie but also a very shrill one, adults will positively despise Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer. Kids will tolerate it well enough, but they won't get anything out if it either.

Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer is based off the children's series by Megan McDonald and they are extremely popular among young girls. Now Judy Moody is on screen in real-sized technicolor and she is winning over hearts everywhere.
If you aren't familiar with the book series, it's probably because you don't have a young girl in your house. But you're not alone. I hadn't read any of the books before seeing this film and it doesn't matter. It's fun, vibrant, energetic, and full of life.
Australian newcomer Jordana Beatty plays the spunky, fun-loving Judy Moody with great spirit and amazing energy. Sometimes a little too much energy! Doesn't she ever get tired?
The books mainly take place during school, but this feature film finds Judy out of the classroom and trying to have the best summer ever.
She soon learns that it might be a lot harder than she had originally planned.

Both of the movies opening in wide release this weekend are about kids, but only one of them is really targeted at kids: World, meet Judy Moody.
"Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer" probably won't challenge "Super 8" for box-office supremacy this weekend, but it could find a nice little niche among kids (and their parents) who are fans of the best-selling books on which the series is based.
The movie stars Jordana Beatty as the title character, whose summer plans look to be dashed when her parents take a trip to California without her. Fortunately cool Aunt Opal (Heather Graham) comes to stay with her and her little brother Stink (Parris Mosteller), and she unleashes a plan for an epically fun summer.

A cute kids movie that is sure not to bummer their summer!
Judy Moody is on a quest for the perfect summer. To ensure that she and her friends have the best time ever, she invokes “thrill points” for every cool thing that they do. The only problem is two of her friends are leaving for the summer. Rocky is going to circus camp, and Amy is on a quest to Borneo. That leaves her with Frank, a less than cool kid with a streak of bad luck, and her brother Stink, who is on a quest to find Bigfoot. To make matters worse, her summer trip is cancelled and Judy has to stay at home with her Aunt Opal, who she barely knows. Now Judy is in a race with her friends to see who can have the most “not bummer summer”!
Jordana Beatty is fun as the character of Judy Moody.

Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer
Directed by: John Schultz
Cast: Jordana Beatty, Heather Graham, Parris Mosteller, Jaleel White
Running Time: 1 hr 31 mins
Rating: PG
Release Date: June 10, 2011
Plot: A young girl (Beatty) determined to have the best summer ever, creates a system that awards her with thrill points whenever she does something different and exciting.
Who’S It For?: Kids who like poop jokes will get a few bits of imagination sprinkled into their entertainment diet, but the amount is underwhelming considering the movie’s potential. As for me, my inner-child and outer-adult were both bored by the movie midway through, once it lost its spark as something creative and instead became something dull.
Expectations: Especially with its grammatical toying, this one looked pretty silly. But what does a “not bummer summer” constitute? Hopefully this movie would encourage creativity both with and within the movie. And possibly...

Jordana Beatty shows plenty of charisma but Not Bummer Summer is a dull adventure. Take all the bright colored paints, gluey streaks of sparkles, stickers and comical sketches that make up the standard elementary school student art project; toss it onto the big screen and you'll have a family adventure similar to director John Schultz's high-energy adaptation of Megan McDonald's popular Judy Moody series of children's books, Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer from Relativity Media and Universal Pictures. To the parents' eyes, Not Bummer Summer may come off as too frantic in tone, visually cluttered and haphazard in its storytelling. Chicago – Films based on children’s book series can’t all be good. The law of averages eventually catches up to the literary moppets who turn their charms towards the big screen. Case in point, the below average “Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer.”
Rating: 2.0/5.0
The film is all sticky, cutesy poo (literally) that is as welcome this summer as a mosquito at a barbecue. Strangely cast in the film is Heather Graham, as free-spirited Aunt Opal, acting much as she did when she shed her clothing as Rollergirl in “Boogie Nights.” And the hyper-caffeinated Judy Moody is stuck in overdrive through Jordana Beatty’s performance, a child actor least likely to evolve to a post adolescent career.
Nine-year old Judy Moody (Beatty) is looking forward to the best summer ever. She fidgets through the last day of third grade, when teacher Mr. Todd (Jaleel White) establishes his yearly “Find Mr.

Jordana Beatty is like every normal 13-year-old girl -- she loves playing with her friends, spending time with her family, and going on adventures. Only Jordana also got to play the role-of-a-lifetime for any young girl - she plays Judy Moody in Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer.
This fun-loving Australian had to ditch her accent to play the American girl from the beloved book series and had the time of her life. But she's not too stressed about her career, taking it all in stride.
"I definitely want to do more, but acting is something that like, when I’m not doing it, I just continue on with my normal life, I go to school and do my activities. But if something comes along I audition for it and if nothing comes out of it, then I just keep going."

In Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, the title tween and her little brother, Stink, set out to have a thrilling summer. Does the movie have any thrills for the audience? Apparently not.

Book adaptations -- when they're done right -- are movie magic. You need only look to "Harry Potter" and "Twilight" for proof that smart producers make films with a built-in fan base, and many (if not most) of our favorite kids' movies got their start on the bookshelf.
We're probably not the target audience for "Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer," starring Heather Graham and a sweet li'l moppet named Jordana Beatty. The book was released in 2000, when most of us here were a touch too old to be reading about third grade troublemakers.
But all good kids' books satisfy someone's sense of nostalgia -- your "Judy Moody" might be our "Willy Wonka." And no matter how many classics get the big screen treatment, some will always fall through the cracks. So here are nine books we can't believe we've never seen onscreen.

The Stars: Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka, Kyle Chandler
The Plot: After witnessing a mysterious train crash, a group of friends in the summer of 1979 begin noticing strange happenings going around in their small town, and begin to investigate into the creepy phenomenon.
The Buzz: The trailer for Super 8 sent shivers down my spine — good shivers. This film looks to be a beautifully crafted Spielbergian throwback. I’m pleased with the lack of A-list actors too. There’s been an air of mystery around this whole production, as J.J.Abrams and company did their best at keeping everything about this film on the hush-hush. I’ll be checking it out as soon as humanly possible...

Monthly Movie Preview – June 2011
Spring has sprung and for those of us in the Chicago area, it’s already come and gone. As Summer picks up, so do the cash cows that Hollywood keeps trying to sell us on. This year’s cash crop ranges from flights of fancy to funny, but this is just the beginning. Studios always seem to start with their best foot forward so you can expect plenty of razzle dazzle to happen in June, but who are we kidding? This is just the red carpet. There’s more to come over the next few months.
But let’s try to stay in the now, shall we? With studios offering fanboys and fangirls plenty to look at, something raunchy for fans of Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake, as well as some family fun with Cars 2, it looks like June has a little something for everyone.
