This documentary about pioneering female musicians is brilliant – yes, there’s misogyny and betrayal but mainly it’s the sheer elation of being in a gang
The first Scottish girl band to break into the charts were the McKinlay Sisters in 1964, a pop duo formed by Jeanette and Sheila McKinlay. The McKinlays played with the Rolling Stones and toured with the Beatles but, says Jeanette, looking back, they were exploited – not paid enough to even live on. They celebrated Sheila’s 20th birthday in their London bedsit with a bag of chips. When the Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein offered to manage them, the band’s label said they already had a manager. It was a lie. Not long after, that same label dropped the McKinlays and they faded into obscurity.
It’s just one of the episodes in this brilliant documentary about pioneering Scottish girl bands that will leave you raging.

Many horror fans probably know that one of the working titles for Wes Craven's 1996 slasher revival "Scream" was "Scary Movie." "Scream," if you'll recall, was a metanarrative horror film, a slasher populated by teenage characters who were movie-savvy enough to recognize they were, themselves, in a slasher situation. The killer had seen "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th," and arranged his murders accordingly. As a character says late in the film, "Movies don't create killers. Movies make killers creative."
"Scream" almost immediately entrenched itself in the pop consciousness, tapping into 1990s self-awareness and reviving the moribund slasher genre for the irony generation. It also wasn't long before the culture became self-aware of its own self-awareness, and thought to dissect the very act of dissection. The ironic mockery of irony was the dominant ethos of the late 1990s. Listen to Harvey Danger's "Flagpole Sitta" sometime for another example of the attitude at play.

Trouble was afoot as soon as Jeanette was back in town. It made no sense that she would run straight back to Hope Valley, announcing that Casimir Shaw was on his way.

A dangerous gangster heads to Hope Valley to complete his mission.
The spoilers for When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 11 tease that Jeanette returns to Hope Valley, and Casimir Shaw soon follows, determined to destroy the town.
Since Bill, Lucas, and Nathan decided to keep Shaw's involvement in Lucas's shooting a secret and Rosemary's in the dark, she's even more determined to learn the truth, landing her and Elizabeth in danger.
It's so frustrating that they've rewritten Lucas's character. The Lucas that appeared in When Calls the Heart Seasons 6 through the first half of Season 10 cared more about bettering a small town and his friends.
The writers have done a 180 with his character. Lucas never would have cared this much about politics.

This was one of the best episodes of the series. It made me smile and cry.
When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 10 invoked all kinds of emotions as Nathan and Elizabeth rushed to rescue Allie, and Faith intervened to keep Lily in her life.
It was an old-school episode where family love and true friendships took center stage. It felt like Hallmark because you were tearing up and needed wine and chocolate to accompany this installment.
It's difficult for teens to give up when they crave the answers about where they came from. That's something most adoptees want more than anything.
It's more complex for Allie because she was adopted by another family member, so she's grown up believing Nathan or her grandmother would fill in the blanks.
Nathan never wanted to hurt her with the truth about Dylan, and Allie wouldn't listen to reason, so she tried to meet him herself.

Spoilers for When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 10 hint that Allie could be in danger when she goes to Grandville Prison alone, hoping to get an answer from her birth father.

Allie is stubborn and sneaky, a dangerous combination.
The last time she filled in at the mercantile was to snoop around for Jacob Canfield's information for Angela and Cooper.
This time, it's not as innocent and heartwarming.
In fact, it's very dark stuff, especially by Hallmark standards.
She obtained the contact information for Grandville Prison and plans to visit Dylan Parks by herself.
Even Angela, who tries to support Allie, thinks this is a dangerous plan.

When Calls the Heart focuses on second chances, which Sunday's episode centers around.
Spoilers for When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 8 hint that Tom returns to Hope Valley, anxious to make amends and still showcase the choir's talent.
Two other new arrivals showed up in Hope Valley, also hoping to clear the air and get a second chance. This should be a heartwarming episode.
After Tom learned in When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 7 that J.B. Sweeney cheated residents out of their money and skipped town, he was determined to make things right.
That won't be easy since the Hope Valley residents are bound to feel cheated out of their money and disappointed that they won't get to sing in the festival, especially Allie and Angela, who were extremely excited to be scouted.
Nathan and Elizabeth agree to help him host a choir festival right there in Hope Valley.

It's always exciting when a series revisits old characters and storylines.
On When Calls the Heart, Season 11 Episode 6, Thomas Higgins, Elizabeth's old foe and the Superintendent of the School Board, returns to cause trouble.
According to the weekly promo and the photos, he seems even more determined to destroy her career and reputation than he was before.

When Calls the Heart finally put some "heart" back in the series.
When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 5 showcased how strong the Hope Valley community was when they worked together and banded together to save Lucas's new resort.
"Stronger Together" explored multiple other subplots and relationships, including whether Nathan and Elizabeth would finally admit their feelings to each other.
Lucas never expected so many issues with clearing the Hope Valley resort, but some were vehemently opposed to it.
The problem was that Mike's sister, Maisy, was the biggest hurdle in their way.
The men only saw her as a problem they needed to overcome, while Mei was worried about getting Maisy to relax and open up.
Since Mei viewed her as a person, Maisy admitted her physical ailments and why she was so demanding about the resort.
It seemed no one took her concerns seriously in Benson Hills, either. They...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 4 “Along Came a Spider.”] Lucas (Chris McNally) gets a very unwanted blast from his past, one he’d not exactly been truthful about, when his old “friend,” Jeanette (Cecilia Deacon), comes to Hope Valley on When Calls the Heart. Sure, they’ve gotten into trouble in the past, but she insists she’s just there representing a group of investors interested in the hotel. Lucas doesn’t buy it and spends the episode trying to get Jeanette to leave and keep her from interacting with anyone, especially his ex-fiancée Elizabeth (Erin Krakow). But Jeanette does make sure to introduce herself to Elizabeth just before she leaves. So how much was Lucas not wanting her around about him knowing her tactics and how much was it him not wanting the reminder of who he was? “I think it’s definitely both. Lucas knows Jeanette well...

Jeanette’s character has been mentioned several times in past seasons.

When CSI: Vegas Season 2 ended, one of the Crime Lab’s own was in cuffs. But what exactly did he do? While we wait for Season 3 (a premiere date for which is unknown due to the writers and actors strikes), that’s what we can’t stop wondering. In the finale, Josh (Matt Lauria) learned his mother (Lolita Davidovich) was murdered, and along with Trey (Daniel Di Tomasso), ran his own investigation that got a little out of hand. At one point, he tricked Kahn Schefter (Shane Callahan), who he thought only knew who killed Jeanette into thinking he was bleeding out (using blood bags — it’s helpful to be a CSI). But then, it turned out, Kahn was the person who killed Josh’s mother … and the team found him dead near the end of the episode. Max (Paula Newsome) and Serena (Ariana Guerra) then found Josh. “Why?” Max asked,...

It's not a summer without a touch of cruelty to it. Throw in a thrilling mystery, some shady suspects, and many heart-pounding twists and turns, and you've got Freeform's addictive murder mystery, Cruel Summer.
The return of this sleeper hit kicked off a brand new case that will excite and keep us guessing.
And based on the set-up of Cruel Summer Season 2 Episode 1 and Cruel Summer Season 2 Episode 2, plenty of secrets are rising to the surface. We've got a summer of intrigue and drama awaiting us, Cruel Summer fans.
For Cruel Summer Season 2, many of the same elements from Cruel Summer Season 1 returned. Like the color grading through the years, the computer intro (which I'm calling the "archive"), and the time jumping.
These aspects worked before, so I'm glad they weren't dropped for the new story. These pieces make Cruel Summer feel like Cruel Summer.

It’s going to be a Cruel Summer for two new teenage girls in Season 2 of the Freeform anthology series, which returns with a two-hour premiere on Monday, June 5 at 9/8c.
Following the breakout hit’s first season, which starred Chiara Aurelia and Olivia Holt, it was unclear if the show would continue with their fan-fave characters, Jeanette and Kate, at the center of a new mystery, or if the cast would return to play new personas. Ultimately, the creative team opted to go the full-fledged anthology route, with a new ensemble and a fresh mystery for the second season.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the CSI: Vegas Season 2 finale “Dying Words.”] CSI: Vegas ends its second season with one of its own in cuffs! In the finale, Josh (Matt Lauria), upon learning his mother (Lolita Davidovich) was murdered, runs his own investigation with Trey (Daniel Di Tomasso). He even tricks someone they think just knows who killed Jeanette into thinking he’s bleeding out with blood bags. But then he learns that this guy is his mother’s kille … and that man is found dead by the rest of the team. When Max (Paula Newsome) and Serena (Ariana Guerra) track down Josh, he lets them cuff him. But is Josh a killer? Hopefully, those May flowers will start blooming soon after the many April (and previous months’) showers. But whatever the weather, Netflix has a solid selection of new movies to watch this month.
Netflix’s May lineup has several bright and joyful animated films as well as more serious stories with light at the end of the tunnel. Tom Hanks’ latest theatrical release “A Man Called Otto” arrives on the streaming service, adapted from Frederick Backman’s book “A Man Called Ove” and following the story of a grumpy old man who struggles to find purpose in life after the death of his wife.
Animated adventures for the whole family include “The Croods” and “The Tale of Desperaux” which teach lessons of bravery in their own ways. For those in the mood for slightly quirkier stories, Jason Moore’s “Pitch Perfect” and “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” should do the trick.

Cruel Summer, the latest offering from actress-turned-producer Jessica Biel, is taking Freeform by storm! The Hollywood Reporter reports that the premiere of the ‘90s-set psychological thriller ranks as the network’s “most watched series debut ever.” With a fluid timeline and narrative, killer retro soundtrack and gripping central mystery, it is no surprise audiences are flocking to watch.
The engrossing story begins on June 21, 1993, the 15th birthday of self-proclaimed “nerdy” high schooler Jeanette Turner (Chiara Aurelia). As the dynamic timeline flips and flops between 1993, 1994 and 1995, we see Jeanette transform — first into the most popular girl in town after the former queen bee, Kate Wallis (Olivia Holt), goes missing and Jeanette seemingly and seamlessly takes her place, and then into the most hated woman in the world upon Kate’s return almost a year later when it is revealed that Jeanette knew of her whereabouts but told no one.
