Dexter, a failed filmmaker, hopes to harness a fabled vortex in the area to inspire a movie. Emayatzy Corinealdi, who plays Jax Stewart in Hulu’s “Reasonable Doubt,” is confronting her past with eyes wide open in a new clip from the season finale, shared exclusively with Variety.
Following the penultimate episode, the high power criminal attorney is left reckoning with the history of sexual assault she faced in her home as a teen and is forced to share the truth of her relationship with her stepfather Paul (Chris Doubek) with her close family members.

While the jury deliberates on the case of Kaleesha’s murder, Stewart takes her first major step forward on her healing journey by divulging her dark secret of Paul grooming her as a teenager with Mama Lu (Pauletta Washington).

“Hypochondriac” informs viewers right away that it is “based on a real breakdown,” which certainly provides a new wrinkle on the now-wildly-overused “true story” proviso. Nonetheless, clarity of hindsight is not a major virtue in this adventurous first feature by writer-director Addison Heimann.
The offbeat indie drama features Zach Villa as a Los Angelean whose troubled past threatens to unravel his domestic partnership and his very sanity. The combination of gay protagonists, mental illness exploration, horror tropes, and surreal elements that gesture toward “Donnie Darko” make for an ambitious mix that holds attention, even if the uneven, somewhat muddled results are ultimately more effortful than insightful.
Following a festival tour that includes a midnight berth at SXSW and fitting slot in genre-focused Fantasia, XYZ Films will open the film in limited release on July 29, with digital and VOD release following Aug. 4.

"It will disturb you." "It will rip at you." XYZ Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror titled Hypochondriac, marking the feature debut of filmmaker Addison Heimann. This premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival back in March, and also played at Panic Fest, Outfest LA, and the Neuchâtel Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland most recently. Will is a young Hispanic potter / artist with a loving boyfriend and a good life, but when his deranged, mentally ill mother re-emerges after a 10 year absence, it erodes the foundation of the world he has created and exposes a dark past of violence he was desperate to keep hidden. Starring Zach Villa as Will, with Devon Graye, Paget Brewster, Marlene Forte, Madeline Zima, Yumarie Morales, and Chris Doubek. This looks crazy – in a good way. The setup with the story is fine, then it goes to some freaky places in the second half of this trailer.

"This world is upside-down." A fateful day is re-examined by its survivors, whose stories are told via a brilliant narrative arrangement, and the use of animated recreations is only one aspect of it. The Texas tower shootings put our present, everyday reign of violent terror in a humanist context. It’s not exploitative — the killer’s name is barely mentioned. It works, it’s riveting, and its positive message is one of calm sanity. Highly recommended.

There’s no place like home for the holidays.
Join Krisha as she returns home for Thanksgiving in the new trailer from A24’s upcoming family drama Krisha.
Krisha is director Trey Edward Schults’ “ferociously impressive feature debut” (Variety) about a woman’s return to the family she abandoned years before, set entirely over the course of one turbulent Thanksgiving. Winner of both the Grand Jury and Audience Awards at the 2015 South-by-Southwest Film Festival, it is an official selection of Critics’ Week at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.
Eric Kohn (Indiewire) writes in his SXSW review, “Krisha snaps into focus whenever Shults’ camera remains trained on his extraordinary lead, whose fierce commitment easily recalls a similar portrait of middle-aged alcoholism in “A Woman Under the Influence.” The final shot once again turns the story over to the contours of Krisha’s face and the shades of emotional ambiguity conveyed by it.

The intimate film was shot in his parents' house and stars members of his family, with his aunt Krisha Fairchild playing the lead. Shults based the feature -- premiering at SXSW 2015 -- on his short that played last year at the fest and won a Special Jury Award.
Some familiar faces with Texas ties also participated in the film: Chris Doubek and Alex Dobrenko, along with actress/director Augustine Frizzell (see my interview with her from last year).
Shults answered a few questions I had about the making of Krisha via email interview.
Slackerwood: What was the process like to adapt your short film into this feature?
Trey Shults: We got the ball rolling on the feature pretty soon after the short played SXSW last year. The short seemed to be well...

With Sundance in the rear view mirror and Berlin just around the corner, another huge festival that’s now very much in mind is the 2015 South By Southwest Film Festival (SXSW 2015), to be held in Austin, Texas, this March. And this year, the lineup looks no less eclectic than in any previous year for the festival.
SXSW 2015 will see the debut of two big-studio comedies (Paul Feig’s Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy; and Etan Cohen’s Get Hard, starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart), some red-hot documentaries (none more so than Alex Gibney’s Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine) and a vast array of smaller indie titles. Intriguingly, Judd Apatow’s Amy Schumer vehicle Trainwreck will be screened as a work-in-progress.
Elsewhere, Alex Garland’s well-received Ex Machina will be making an appearance, as will Ryan Gosling’s much-maligned Lost River. And curiously, there will be a...

Arlo (Alex Dobrenko, Hell No) and Julie (Ashley Spillers, Loves Her Gun) are your typical young twentysomething Austinites. Arlo works at a software company but writes historical articles about General Grant on the side. Julie is a waitress at a restaurant that looks like Eastside Cafe. They live, love and get by in a fourplex on W. 29th. One day, Julie receives a couple of puzzle pieces in the mail.
Such is the premise for director Steve Mims' adorable mystery-comedy Arlo and Julie. Filmed around Austin -- and on a soundstage at Ut's Rtf department -- this movie is a quirky look at obsession. As Julie and Arlo become more and more engrossed in this puzzle of puzzles, their lives and goals are ignored. The script, which Mims also wrote, is filled with laughs and bits of Civil War trivia.

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.

Title: White Reindeer Director: Zach Clark Starring: Anna Margaret Hollyman, Laura Lemar-Goldsborough, Lydia Johnson, Joe Swanberg, Nathan Williams, Chris Doubek Writer-director Zach Clark’s “White Reindeer” is a curious and frustrating film. Anchored by a compelling lead performance from Anna Margaret Hollyman, and tossing off little riffs of dry wit and allegory here and there, it’s a very particular and peculiar indie offering. Unfortunately, its originality is undone by false-note narrative beats and a muddled if not outright phony moral theme or purpose, resulting in a work that is definitely distinctive yet far from singular. Set in present-day suburban Virginia, the film centers around Suzanne Barrington (Hollyman), a real estate agent who enjoys a nice [ Read More ]

IFC Films acquired North American rights to the Zach Clark-directed comedy White Reindeer, which stars Anna Margaret Hollyman, Laura Lemar-Goldsborough, Lydia Johnson, Joe Swanberg and Chris Doubek. Clark, who wrote the script, produced with Daryl Pittman and Melodie Sisk, Kevin Clark and Joan Peacock are exec producers. The film will have a day and date release in theaters and will also premiere digitally on December 6, 2013. Logline: a shell-shocked real estate agent grapples with personal tragedy while fumbling to let loose among strip clubs, department stores, and swinging new neighbors during one sad, strange December in suburban Virginia. Chicago – We often go to the movies to suspend real life and explore what we think about doing but won’t or would do but can’t. Have you ever fallen for a much younger man or woman? Have you ever had a secret affair with someone at work? Have you ever obsessed over someone you shouldn’t?

Bujalski adds Technology to the Perils of Human Connection
In an Andrew Bujalski film, there is nothing harder than making yourself understood. Funny Haha is now considered a watershed moment, a film that spawned a legion of imitators. In it, Bujalski perfectly captured the muddled speech patterns and the even more confused motivations that characterize post-collegiate angst. Mutual Appreciation and Beeswax furthered this aesthetic, exploring the nuanced, minute ways people hurt each other, always at cross purposes, often not on purpose. With his newest Computer Chess, Bujalski explores a whole new terrain, and a new way of seeing but still with the same themes and preoccupations; it is not enough that human communication is trying, now technology must be a struggle as well.
A weekend conference at a third-rank motel is the battleground where teams from across the Us come to pit their computers against each other in a chess tournament.

Stateside Independent will screen The Happy Poet -- which premiered at SXSW 2010 -- Monday, May 6 at 7 pm [ticket info]. Cast members Jonny Mars, Chris Doubek and Liz Fisher, and producer David Hartstein, will be there for a Q&A following the movie.
In The Happy Poet, a comedy filmed in Austin, unemployed writer Bill (writer-director Paul Gordon) dreams of running a cart that sells local/organic vegetarian snacks: eggless egg-salad sandwiches, basil pesto pitas and the like. There's just a slight hitch in his plans: He's practically broke and has to insinuate to the man selling him the food cart that he will be selling hot dogs instead. He makes the snacks at his apartment in the morning (my baker friend would be distressed to see his lack of plastic gloves) and stakes out a spot to sell his wares.
Bill, bespectacled and hesitant, is aided in this venture by friends who...

It might seem fitting that a cast and crew of rookies made a film about a beer league softball team, but it is pretty surprising that the resulting film is as strong of a debut as Summer League. Having been deeply embedded in the Austin film community for a few years now, I was admittedly very apprehensive about screening an Austin film with no recognizable names. (I mean, really, what is an Austin film without Jonny Mars, Chris Doubek, John Merriman, Ashley Spillers and Heather Kafka?) Thankfully, though, writer-director Lex Lybrand and his rookie team knock this film way out of the proverbial park. Summer League is an impeccably-made, professional-quality film, from the aforementioned writing and directing to the cinematography (Austin Shaffer) and editing (Lex Lybrand). The impressive production quality is rivaled by the astounding break-out performances of Danielle Ploeger, Kelsey Thomas and Gabriel Peña. I am not sure where...

I'll start off by saying that I think it's hard to beat a well crafted ensemble piece that features a talented cast. And does Good Night ever feature a talented cast. If the names Todd Berger, Alex Karpovsky, Jason Newman and Chris Doubek don't mean anything to you, you haven't been paying adequate attention. Get those four together on (or off) screen and you can be guaranteed good things are going to happen. And there's not a shabby performance to be found here, with actors previously unknown to me (Samantha Thomson, Laura Clifton, Parisa Fakhri, Elizabeth Riley and Jeff Benson) all giving top notch performances.

After several years in the making, Sean Gallagher's Austin-shot film Good Night debuted at SXSW -- find out more about the journey from Gallagher in Elizabeth's interview. The good news is that since this narrative provides glimpses of the past, the filmmaker was able to capture the main characters over a time span that could mirror the fictional narrative.
Good Night revolves around a young twentysomething couple, Leigh (Adriene Mishler) and Winston (Jonny Mars) Rockwall, as they gather with their closest friends to celebrate Leigh's twenty-ninth birthday. The guests enjoy casual conversation as well as controversial and current topics as they enjoy their dinner, until Leigh drops a bomb having a profound effect on them all. The guests, including Leigh's best friend Alice (Samantha Thomson), all react differently as they process the news. Through voice-overs and flashbacks we learn how each person became connected to Leigh.

It’s only a matter of time before she gives in again to her desire; this time even more recklessly than before. The film made its premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, and co-stars Jennifer Prediger, Julie Dell Phillips, Jonny Mars and Chris Doubek.

South by Southwest (SXSW) is just one of many film festivals, we here at Sound On Sight cover yearly. The fest, which takes place every spring in Austin, Texas, began in 1987, and has continued to grow in size every year. The fest announced the first wave of films back in early January, and the lineup included some highly anticipated films such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Evil Dead, Downloaded and Spring Breakers. Now the full lineup has been announced, and it just might be one of the best lineups the festival has ever programmed.
SXSW takes place March 8-16 in Austin Texas. Here are just some of the films we are excited about.
Narrative Feature Competition – This year’s 8 films were selected from 1,191 submissions. Each film is a World Premiere.

While The Man from Orlando does feature a nicely constructed narrative arc that revolves around Orlando, it truly excels as a just-wacky-enough ensemble piece that showcases stand-out performances by several of Austin's best comedic actors: Chris Doubek, Kelli Bland, John Merriman, and Sam Eidson. And while I had no idea who Alan Metoskie was before seeing The Man from Orlando, his performance as Kip will forever be emblazoned as a shit-eating grin on my face. Oh, and let us not forget one of my personal favorites, Macon Blair as the bartender who refuses to serve beer to Orlando. This leaves Jason Newman and Lee Eddy -- who have done most of their work on the stage -- to play the proverbial straight parts, which they do so quite admirably.
