Wizard World Comic Con visited Portland, Oregon last weekend and they provided me an opportunity to attend. The experience had it’s good points and it’s bad which I will get into.
Batman-Kevin Conroy
To start, it was much smaller an affair than I anticipated. I think back to Rose City Comic Con back in September, which utilized the entire Oregon Convention Center with the main hall and numerous meeting rooms for the various panels. Wizard World used the main hall as well as two sets of meeting rooms which made the event feel smaller. That’s not a bad thing in and of itself, just an observation.
The line to get into the convention hall was long. The biggest problem I had with it was that the Wizard World staff utilized only one set of doors for the entrance. Everyone had to be scanned with a...

Today, Marvel Comics announced plans for a new solo Luke Cage ongoing comic book series from David Walker, who's currently writing the well-received Power Man & Iron Fist series. He'll be joined by Nelson Blake II, who'll handle art duties. In a new interview with Cbr, Walker announced that his run on Power Man & Iron Fist is coming to a close in May but he'll still be writing at least one-half of the duo in the new Cage solo book. On the new series, Walker stated, "With this book I’m trying to build off the shoulders of everything that has come before. Just as he was in the “Power Man & Iron Fist” run, he’s a bit wiser. He’s still very street-smart, but he’s also a father, a husband, and he’s been through a lot more. I’m writing him in a much more contemplative way. He...

Something we’ve seen from various comic book publishers in recent years is an attempt to align their titles with their big and small screen counterparts. Although the source material inspires the live action adaptations, it doesn’t hurt to when the former takes a few cues from the latter. After all, new readers are often hooked when they see something comparable to a movie or TV show they love.
Marvel is certainly no stranger to doing this, as evidenced by their upcoming All-New Guardians of the Galaxy and Defenders series. No doubt capitalizing on the popularity of the hit Netflix show, none other than Luke Cage can proudly be added to that list. And seeing as how he’s on a pop culture upswing right now, there couldn’t be a better time to grant him a headlining gig.
If anything, the House of Ideas picked the right man...

Twitter users have resurfaced an old tweet from Trump Hotels to attack President Donald Trump in the wake of his executive order banning travel from seven Muslim-majority countries for 90 days and suspending all refugee admission for 120 days.
The 2011 tweet by Trump Hotels — which called on users to “tell us your favorite travel memory – was it a picture, a souvenir, a sunset?” — was co-opted over the weekend by critics of the president’s refugee ban.

As I sit here looking at my iPad screen writing this, I think back on the past two days at the Rose City Comic Con and think “Damn, what experience in my life will ever top the fun I had this weekend?” This was the first Comic Convention I ever attended and damned if every other con to follow will have a lot to live up to.
What struck me first was the atmosphere. From the moment I stepped off the Max train (the often times unreliable form of public transportation we in Portland rely upon) and walked to the entrance of Rccc, you felt an aura, for lack of a better term, of acceptance and joy. Folks of all shapes, sizes, and ages were dressed in their favorite characters, ready to show them off to not only the other convention goers but hopefully to some of the creators who...

The end to Cyborg‘s first arc is here and while the ending may wrap up just tightly enough that you could call this comic overall a mini-series everything changes, and David Walker leaves just enough for fans for an emotional payoff and give a glimpse at a new future for Victor Stone.
The cover itself is a foreshadowing for what’s to come. It’s the end all be all fight between Cyborg and company versus the Technosapiens, and given everything we know about the infectious alien species, it works! Two words could be used to describe comics in 2015: scandal and rebirth. The scandals happened off the pages at both companies large and small, and the rebirth happened in the comics themselves.
Graphic Policy reported that former Dark Horse Comics editor-in-chief Scott Allie bit writer Joe Harris (X-Files Season Ten) at the Boom! Studios party at San Diego Comic Con, and he was demoted to “executive editor” even though an assault of this kind would be grounds for dismissal at almost any other company. There was also another ethical breach at Dark Horse when The Rainbow Hub journalist Emma Houxbois reported that former Bleeding Cool editor Hanna Means-Shannon broke a Dark Horse-related story while it was under embargo and didn’t disclose the fact that she was taking a job with the company.
Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso’s dismissal of African-American comics fans and creators when asked why...

#BlackComicsMonth Diversity in Comics Panel (My view from the back row)
Hosted by the energetic Miz Caramel Vixen, the founder of Vixenvarsity.com, the #BlackComicsMonth Diversity in Comics panel featured a wide variety of panelists from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and sexualities. They also work in vastly different comics genres from Mildred Louis writing and drawing a Magical Girl webcomic with women of color called Agents of the Realm to David F. Walker, who directed a documentary about the blaxploitation genre and currently writes Cyborg for DC Comics and much more. One of the panelists, Mikki Kendall, only recently broke into comics with the Swords of Sorrow: Lady Rawhide/Miss Fury one-shot and is more well-known for her pieces about intersectional feminism for XoJane, The Guardian, and others as well as prose fiction. Vixen let each panelist speak their mind about what diversity means to them, and they often tied in...

As the cover implies, Victor Stone does not catch breaks. Cyborg #3 picks up immediately after the cliffhanger ending of the last issue, and we focus on the Technosapiens infecting Robert in his own living room. Elsewhere, more of their kind open a portal in Downtown Detroit and begin the invasion.
Ivan Reis embraces the normal war-torn backgrounds as we pick up 24 hours later with Cyborg and Sebastian leading a group of civilians to safety. Even though their surroundings are less than great, Cyborg still cracks a joke or two about this is just what the Justice League does. He literally stands out here given his blue and white color scheme from colorist Adriano Lucas. During some narration, Cyborg surmises that the nightmares that he’s...

The "Heroes For Hire" return for their new series in 2016. Here's what David Walker had to say about getting the opportunity to write this iconic duo, and Axel Alonso offering him the opportunity to choose which Marvel characters he wanted to work with. " "About a year ago or so, [Marvel Editor-In-Chief] Axel Alonso asked me to list all the characters that I wanted to work with the most," said Walker. "He said, ‘Don’t be limited—go as big as you want.’ At the very top of that list were Luke Cage and Danny Rand, and I put in parentheses after their names: ‘as a team.’ Because this was something that I’d wanted to see for years and years. That particular duo, they’re so iconic. As a writer, you love interesting characters, and those two characters are so fun to delve into. They are the ultimate bromantic couple."...

Cyborg #2 picks up immediately with the aftermath of the disastrous battle that the Tekbreakers retreated from. Readers are left to wonder just where in the DC Universe they set up shop, but our brief catch up with what’s left of the Strike Team tells us some interesting details. If you remember the 8-Page preview for the title, Cyborg and the Justice League were attacked by the very same team of Tekbreakers and wound up “killing” Victor in battle for “Technology Purposes.” An ally of the Team, a blonde women (with some very Deus Ex glasses) in a hovering chair a la Professor Xavier scolds them for killing their only hope and dooming another universe lest the Technosapiens get their hands on the technology they hold. In August 2011, DC Comics changed everything with their line wide reboot dubbed “The New 52”. This reboot started with Justice League #1 and exploded with 51 other titles in September to get things rolling. In the first month of the New 52, every member of the Justice League received their own solo title with the exception: Cyborg. Fast forward four years later, and that issue is rectified with Victor Stone getting his own title written by David Walker and art by Ivan Reis.
Cyborg #1 opens up in a location only described as “somewhere in another galaxy,” with two warring factions, the space marine style Tekbreakers and the symbiotic Technosapiens. (For a visual reference, the Tekbreakers look like Halo‘s Spartans while the Technosapiens look like Venom and The Collector from Mass Effect 2 had a child.

David Walker, who continues to write stories around the original blaxploitation character, says studio New Line’s proposed direction ‘will ruin the chances of there ever being a decent Shaft movie’

David Walker is not happy with news about the upcoming second reboot of "Shaft".
Walker is the writer of Dynamite Entertainment's "Shaft" comic series and the recent novel "Shaft's Revenge," the first official and authorized "Shaft" novel in court decades.
Today he posted an open letter on his website objected to reports from earlier this week which indicated New Line is developing a reboot of the blaxploitation hero with Kenya Barris and Alex Barnow penning the script.
Specifically he's not happy that the new version is said to take the franchise in a more comedic direction, saying that the studio is "more interested in sh--ting the bed, than making a good Shaft movie" and that the film will be a flop that will "ruin the chances of there ever being a decent Shaft movie in the remainder of my lifetime."

A young mom is dead after being shot in the head by her 3-year-old son in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Christa Engles was changing her 1-year-old daughter's diaper when her 3-year-old son found a semiautomatic handgun under the couch, Kjrh reports. Engles, 26, who lived with her mother and husband, was alone with the children at the time of the accident on Monday evening. The woman was rushed to the hospital after her mother arrived home and found her daughter "in the front room of the house as if she was changing the 1-year-old's diaper," Tulsa police Sgt. Dave Walker said in a statement to Tulsa World.

The Broken Bay Diocese of the Catholic Church has donated $20,000 towards the cost of producing a 30-minute drama which tackles sexual abuse in the Church.
A Priest in the Family stars Lynette Curran, Susie Porter, Gillian Jones and Lisa Hensley and is based on a short story by Irish writer Colm Tóibín about an elderly woman whose son, a parish priest, is accused of molesting his former students.
Co-directed by producer Anni Finsterer and Peter Humble, who wrote the screenplay, the film has finished shooting. Finsterer tells If that Humble is assembling footage so the producers can apply for funds to complete post production.
Curran plays Molly, a vigorous Irish woman in her late 70s who attempts to keep up with the changing times of her grandchildren by mastering the Internet. When Molly learns that her son Frank, a local parish priest, is about to go on trial for the sexual abuse of former students,...

“I think it would be tricky to have one member of the Storm family black and one white. Is he adopted? I don’t know how you would play that.”
– Mark Millar
“ This speech is my recital, I think it’s very vitalTo rock (a rhyme), that’s right (on time)
It’s Tricky is the title, here we go…”

“Tyrone Cash should be named Super Nigga.”

Mark Millar is talking about the possibility the next Fantastic Four will feature a African American in the role of the Human Touch. Run-dmc is what I think is a pretty clever answer to Mr. Millar’s assumption, namely that it would be tricky but – I think it would be right on time.
Damn – I is clever.

The Steve Buscemi period crime drama is starting up its highly anticipated fourth season this week. A teaser video for "True Detective" was released online by HBO this past June and it certainly sets the mood for this tale of...

Vernon Kay has revealed that he was caught red-handed while trying to 'steal' a memento from BBC Television Centre.
The presenter was found out by a security guard after attempting to take home a door sign, and was ordered to return it.
The sign in question was from his first dressing room during his stint as FBi host, back in 2000.
"It was a sign from my first-ever TV dressing room so I couldn't resist taking it for sentimental reasons," he told The Mirror.
"The security guard was lovely though and said he would put my name down for it if it came up for auction."
The BBC buildings in White City will close down on March 31, after being sold off for £200 million. They are to be converted into shops, offices and a hotel.
A source added: "Vernon had obviously had a good night after post-show drinks. Everyone was trying to nick stuff,...

I really wanted to break my link posting hiatus on its traditional Sunday yesterday, but a technical crisis prevented me from doing so. But, here we are:
The other reason I only wanted to come out of hiatus was to share this brilliant article by donna k. giving advice to young filmmakers. I was particularly taken with her 3rd note regarding asking oneself the ever important question “Why make this film?” That’s something I’ve come across on my own as a paid screener for a festival, too, but also checking out the films submitted to Bad Lit via email. When a film doesn’t work, the first question I typically ask myself is: “Why did that person even bother?” And I usually assume the answer is just to regurgitate other shit seen in our culture. So, please take Donna’s advice: Be introspective, thoughtful and have a Pov.

With Thanksgiving keeping TV off the air for half the week, it’s a short show list this podcast. We more than make up for that, however, with our mega spotlight on Treme’s finale, as well as its season as a whole. Dave Walker of Nola.com joins us for our nearly hour-long look at what has been an outstanding season of storytelling and music. Before that, though, we go through a truncated week in TV, including the Tuesday comedies (Ben and Kate, New Girl, Mindy Project, and Go On), Parenthood, Top Chef Seattle, The Amazing Race, Bob’s Burgers, The Good Wife, Homeland, The Voice, and Revolution’s fall finale.

2012 appears to be the year for younger, i.e. under 10 years old, underground fests to blow it wide open and go for broke. This time it’s the 4th annual Oakland Underground Film Festival that is expanding its horizons into a blowout four-day, much more densely packed affair, running on Sept. 27-30 at several different locations.
Expanding on the types of films they screen, this year Oakuff is jammed pack with a wide variety of documentaries, thrillers, a bevy of short films and a special tribute to blaxploitation films hosted by BadAzz MoFo’s David Walker.
The fest opens on the 27th with skateboarding filmmaker Stacy Peralta’s latest, Bones Brigade: An Autobiography, which documents his own involvement with California board culture along with peers like Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen. Following that will be Ya’Ke Smith’s complex drama about the effects of child molestation.

My 12-year-old daughter, a member of three sports clubs in Newham, started saving Christmas and birthday money to buy Olympics tick ets. Two weeks at home in the Olympic borough would replace an annual holiday. We spent hours trying to make a purchase. Our saving and time spent clicking were rewarded with not a single ticket.
This frustration was compounded when we saw rows of empty seats just half a mile from our home and then discovered that at least a fifth of seats are reserved for the Olympic family and their corporate friends (Army brought in to fill seats, 30 July) . The ticketing process is seriously flawed and designed to ensure that those who make a profit through encouraging obesity prevail over those who want to see and learn from their role models. So much for the commitment to "inspire a generation" and "create step change in sporting participation".

As first reported by Dave Walker of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, HBO executives called Simon today to tell him they're ordering a third season of "Treme."
