U.S. Senate majority whip (3 January 2003 - 3 January 2007).

Was a Deputy Assistant Attorney General under President Gerald Ford [1974-1975].

Graduated with honors in 1964 from the University of Louisville with a B.A. in political science. Was student body president and member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. Graduated with a J.D. in 1967 from the University of Kentucky Law School, where he was elected president of the Student Bar Association.

[observation, May 2017] I think we could do with a little less drama from the White House.

I allow Kentucky to punch above its weight. My last term $17.5 billion for the commonwealth that would not have been there had I not been the majority leader of the Senate.

on the 2022 midterm election results] I never said there was a red wave, I said we had a bunch of close races. We ended up having a candidate quality [issue. Look at Arizona, look at New Hampshire, there was a challenging situation in Georgia as well.
