She is an author and poet and has written the following books: The House on Mango Street (poetry, 1984), Caramelo (novel, 2002), Loose Woman (poetry, 1994), Hairs / Pelitos (children's book, 1994), My Wicked Wicked Ways (poetry, 1987), The Rodrigo Poems (poetry, 1985), Bad Boys (poetry, 1980), and Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories (short stories, 1991).
