On a microbudget feature with a skeleton crew, you often end up wearing multiple hats. But a different metaphor is required to describe cinematographer Jeremy Mackie’s contribution to Language Lessons. It’s more like Mackie made the hats from scratch, then mailed them to the actors with instructions on how to wear them. The film stars Mark Duplass as a grieving Angeleno who platonically bonds with his Costa Rican tutor via Zoom during weekly Spanish immersion lessons. Though the movie—which debuted at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival before playing South by Southwest—never mentions Covid, it’s […]

Before diving into Natalie Morales’ often charming Language Lessons, I approached the film with a certain skepticism. After a year of endless Zoom meetings, FaceTimes with friends keeping their social distance, and way too much social media, my mind is craving escapist entertainment rather than yet another “Zoom movie.” On the other hand, Zoom represents both a new and old frontier for mumblecore filmmakers. While early works of mumblecore like Joe Swanberg’s Lol and Susan Buice and Arin Crumley’s Four Eyed Monsters were largely focused on web collaborations (the later started as and continued as video podcast dispatches), Language Lessons explores both new and old territory. Taking a certain form due to the circumstances of a year where long-distance relationships––especially with those outside of one’s household––were preferred, it gives a valid reason why Adam (Mark Duplass) and Carino (Morales) would form such a bond.

Sean Porter, of the gorgeous Kumiko The Treasure Hunter, Eden, It Felt Like Love, and now Green Room, (and soon to be of The Trust) and I go in depth on the technical and conceptual aspects of Green Room’s cinematography. We talk small details like T-Stops and Focal lengths, and broader intentions like visual arcs that are brought on literally by the script. Porter began his career in the midst of the digital revolution which allowed him to shoot on 35mm and 16, while also working with digital from the advent.
He’s gone from Mini Dv, to the Red One, to the current Gold Standard the Arri Alexa. His way with digital photography: beat it up til it has some character. Read below our geeky splurge, to see how Green Room acquired its toxic, classical look.

Chicago – Give Lynn Shelton a few days, a dozen crew members, a picturesque cabin and three terrific actors, and just look at what she’s capable of making. “Your Sister’s Sister” is clearly the work of a filmmaker in full command of her craft. With limited resources and very little time, writer/director Shelton somehow managed to capture a fully realized human drama brimming with richly etched characters and marvelously insightful comedy.
The more one knows about the process of filmmaking, particularly on a shoestring budget, the more one is bound to be impressed by Shelton’s achievement. Though several months of planning preceded the film’s tight production schedule, one of the three stars dropped out before shooting was set to begin. Since roughly ninety-five percent of the film is inhabited solely by these three main characters, the results of this last-minute change could’ve been catastrophic.
