No, it’s not a horror movie, though it certainly sounds like one. Change “Living” to dead and you’ve got a zombie movie. Or a lawsuit from the people who made George Romero’s zombie opus “Land of the Dead”, anyway. Luckily, we’re not talking about zombies here, just street criminals in the new thriller “Land of the Living”, which has snagged “Colombiana” director Olivier Megaton to its cause. The French director has boarded the film, about “a young advertising executive who is abducted on the streets of Los Angeles, manages to escape and tracks down her would-be killer.” The movie will be based on a bestselling British novel of the same name by husband-and-wife writers Nicci Gerard and Sean French (writing under Nicci French). No cast yet, but signing on Megaton is the first step. The film certainly sounds like something up Megaton’s alley, who last...

Olivier Megaton has looked pretty comfortable in his action thriller niche for a while now, what with directing Transporter 3, Colombiana and now Taken 2. All those have been alongside Luc Besson as producer, but Megaton has just signed on to break away from the Besson camp for Land Of The Living. Megaton will remain in similar action territory, as the film finds a young advertising executive abducted on the streets of Los Angeles. But instead of simply becoming a victim, she manages to escape and starts tracking down the man who had intended to kill her.Sean Gulette adapted the script from the book by Nicci Gerard and Sean French, who write under the name Nicci French. It sounds as though it could tackle almost the same story as recent Amanda Seyfried thriller Gone, though hopefully it’ll be, you know, good. Or at least watchable.Megaton is looking...

After recently wrapping the Liam Neeson sequel “Taken 2,” it appears the wonderfully-named director Olivier Megaton (“Transporter 3”) has been bitten by the abduction genre bug, and has quickly set up plans for another similar thriller, this time located on the streets of Los Angeles.
Emjag Productions, Stone Village, Battleplan Productions, Film 360 and Dro Entertainment announced today that Megaton will direct the independent actioner “Land of the Living,” scripted by Sean Gullette and based off the British novel by Nicci French (the pseudonym for husband-and-wife duo Nicci Gerard and Sean French). The film follows a young female ad exec, Abbie Devereaux, who is abducted on L.A. streets and manages to escape without police intervention, and finds herself - surprise, surprise - eager to inflict some much-wanted retribution upon her would-be killer.
It may come as a shock, but Luc Besson's name is nowhere near this project, although Megaton's previous film,...

From stage-door duties for the RSC, to the village famous for Straw Dogs, Observer writers reveal their idea of a perfect summer, past and present

Let's be honest – the notion of summer as an extended golden period of rest and re-stimulation really now only applies to the young, the retired, or those in the teaching professions. The rest of us slog on, hoping to catch the odd festival (or maybe just gig in a park), marking time until camping in Cornwall or fly-drive to France, where finally luxuriating in the latest Alan Hollinghurst will come a distant second to stopping the youngest weeing in the hotel pool.
Once, though, I was artfully feckless too, making the rent by working as an usher for the Royal Shakespeare Company. "Good evening ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the...

Its savage and protracted depictions of women being beaten have made Michael Winterbottom's adaptation of Jim Thompson's novel about a psychopathic killer the most divisive film of the year. The director has said that he wants people to see sexual assault for what it is - 'horrible, nasty, ugly and pointless'. Here, two critics, a writer and an actor give their opinion on whether the film's violence is excessive
Mark Kermode: film critic
As with the source novel, the psychopathic violence depicted in The Killer Inside Me is both disturbing and problematic. All too often film-makers use women as props to be leered at, with glamorised assault a depressingly regular selling point. Within this context, I understand entirely why Michael Winterbottom's film has so offended some viewers. My good friend and colleague Simon Mayo (whose opinion I respect) found the film vile and misogynist, an opinion...
