Horror Highlights: Blood Hunters, Trash Fire at Screamfest, The Terrible Two, Brooklyn Horror Film Festival
Tricia Lee's Blood Hunters kicks off today's Horror Highlights with news that the film will have three screenings this month in North America, just in time for the most glorious of holidays, Halloween! Also: a recap / photos for Trash Fire's Screamfest screening in Los Angeles, a trailer / poster for The Terrible Two, and the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival's list of awards.

Blood Hunters North American October Premiere: Press Release: "The trees are changing color and the weather is starting to cool, but Halloween is right around the corner. And Blood Hunters is having its North American premiere in the month of October. With three screenings scheduled this month, the film is fresh off a successful and well-received world premiere at Horror Channel Frightfest in London.

These Blood Hunters Needed More Teeth: A Film Review
*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by director Tricia Lee. **there are minor spoilers here. Director: Tricia Lee. Writer: Corey Brown. Cast: Lara Gilchrist, Benjamin Arthur, Torri Higginson and Mark Taylor. Blood Hunters is a film from director Tricia Lee (Silent Retreat) and writer Corey Brown (Clean Break). This creature feature recently had a showing at the FrightFest Film Festival, in the United Kingdom. Very indie, the film takes place, exclusively, in an underground medical facility. Here, the lighting and setting look great. However, almost all of the characters are unlikeable and most are immoral, especially Marion (Torri Higginson). Marion causes most of the film's chaos, due to her incompetency. The film's overly sappy tone also dampens the mood as Blood Hunters focuses on dialogue, over tension, conflict and real terror. Blood Hunters is a dramatic horror feature and it will appeal to some, but it did not entertain this viewer.

Back This: One Drop / Toxic Tutu
Welcome to the latest edition of our regular crowdfunding feature here on Nerdly – Back This! – where we take a look at some of the cool content taking the crowdfunding route on sites such as Indiegogo, Sponsume and Kickstarter. In this edition we’re taking a look at two new movie campaigns: a creature feature and a fantastic sounding Troma documentary.

One Drop

One Drop is a new horror creature feature from director Tricia Lee, which tells the story of a single mother who wakes up in the basement of a medical facility only to discover that everyone around her is dead and she is somehow nine months pregnant. As she tries to escape, she realises that something not-quite-human is prowling the hallways, and the only means of survival may be growing inside of her.

Lee, one of the very few successful female directors in the genre, first made the audience...

Working the Engels: Season One Ratings
NBC has been having a tough time finding new successful comedies. Will Working the Engels be a surprise ratings hit? Will it be renewed for a second season or will it be cancelled instead? Stay tuned.

On Working the Engels, a family of ne'er-do-wells must band together to keep their heads above water when their lawyer patriarch dies and leaves them with a mountain of debt. The cast includes Andrea Martin, Kacey Rohl, Azura Skye, and Benjamin Arthur.

The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available -- usually the next day, around 11:30am Est/8:30am Pst. Refresh to see the latest.

Working the Engels: Cancelled? NBC Pulls New Thursday Sitcom
It looks like the Engels are out of work. NBC has pulled their new Working the Engels sitcom from the schedule. Has it been cancelled?

On Working the Engels, a family of ne'er-do-wells must band together to keep their heads above water when their lawyer patriarch dies and leaves them with a mountain of debt. The cast includes Andrea Martin, Kacey Rohl, Azura Skye, and Benjamin Arthur.

The peacock network has pulled the series from the schedule effective immediately. They're replacing it with additional airings of Welcome to Sweden -- another new Thursday sitcom that's better rated and has already been renewed for a second season.

There's no word on if NBC will ever put Working the Engels back on the air but things don't look good. The summer is nearly over and NBC has already announced their plans for fall. What's...

On Working the Engels, a family of ne'er-do-wells must band together to keep their heads above water when their lawyer patriarch dies and leaves them with a mountain of debt. The cast includes Andrea Martin, Kacey Rohl, Azura Skye, and Benjamin Arthur.

Crossbones (2014)
'Undateable,' 'Crossbones' and 'Night Shift' get NBC summer premieres
Crossbones (2014)
For 10 months, they've been pictures on the side of milk cartons, but...  "Crossbones" lives! "Undateable" lives! "The Night Shift" lives! NBC announced six scripted additions to its already busy summer slate on Wednesday (March 26) and if you were looking for premiere dates for all of the mysteriously vanished shows the network unveiled last May, we've found them! In all, NBC will be airing six original scripted shows this summer, the most for any broadcast network in more than 20 years, so NBC says. [By my count, ABC's summer schedule will include five original scripted shows.] Once again: Never say that there's nothing to watch on TV in the summer. On to those premieres... [Note that NBC previously announced premiere dates for "Last Comic Standing" (Thursday, May 22), "American Ninja Warrior" (Monday, May 26) and "America's Got Talent" (Tuesday, May 27).] Up first on the scripted front is "The Night Shift," airing Tuesdays at 10 p.m. starting on May 27, when it'll likely get a solid bump from the "Agt" premiere. Eoin Macken stars as a renegade doctor working the late...

NBC Gives 12-Episode Order To Comedy It Will Co-Produce With Halfire-Core & Shaw
NBC has picked up 12-episode series single-camera comedy Working The Engels, starring Sctv alumna Andrea Martin. NBC will co-produce the series with Core Media/Noreen Halpern’s Halfire-core Entertainment, which has a 3-for-1 drama series deal at NBC, and Canada’s Shaw Media. American networks have teamed with Canadian broadcasters on comedy projects before — most recently last season when ABC partnered with Shaw to co-produce a half-hour by Bob Martin — but this is the first time such a collaboration has gone to series. Working The Engles, created and written by Katie Ford and Jane Ford, centers on a family who must band together to keep their heads above water when their father and breadwinner passes away, leaving them a mountain of debt. The Engels must all go to work running Dad’s storefront law firm, with one minor problem — daughter Jenna is the only one who is qualified to practice law.

Maury Chaykin, Wendel Meldrum, Nancy Sorel, Jesse Camacho, and Benjamin Arthur in Less Than Kind (2008)
Chris Jancelewicz: 'Less Than Kind' Takes A Bow
Maury Chaykin, Wendel Meldrum, Nancy Sorel, Jesse Camacho, and Benjamin Arthur in Less Than Kind (2008)
Canadians have the TV comedy market cornered. That's not me being a smug Canadian, it's just fact.

Think about it. In addition to the obvious "Second City" alumni, we've produced some serious comedic talent in this country. Maybe it's in the water. Whatever the case, this Sunday we're bidding farewell (perhaps forever) to one of the best -- if not the best -- Canadian-made TV comedies. "Less Than Kind" is finishing up its three-season run in what some are speculating might be the last-ever episode (titled 'March Fourth').

No one thought "Less Than Kind" could do it. When the patriarch of the show, Maury Chaykin, passed away in July 2010, many asked how it could possibly survive without its comedic lynchpin. The answer is simple, and has been made very clear during the season 3 run: other members of the cast, especially young Jesse Camacho, pulled it all together and put on...

Two brothers from Pennsylvania have been accused of stealing a 50ft suspension bridge. Benjamin Arthur Jones and Alexander Williams Jones allegedly used a blowtorch to break up the steel structure and sold the resulting 15.5 tons of scrap metal for $$5,000 (£3,100). "I couldn't believe it," said Gary Bruce of New Castle Development, which owns the bridge. "It's a lot of work." The pair now face felony charges of criminal mischief, theft, receiving stolen property and conspiracy, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. (more)...

'Stargate' Roars at Canada's Leo Awards
With so much fuss being made about J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot, it's easy to forget that there is another successful franchise out there with Star... in the title. That would be Stargate, which is due for its own sort of makeover later this year with the premiere of Stargate Universe. This is no sign that the concept is struggling, though. Indeed, the slew of awards that Stargate productions won at the recent Leo Awards in Vancouver, British Columbia (the home base of CinemaSpy) shows that it continues to be admired.

The Leo Awards are presented by the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Foundation of B.C.. They were established in 1998 to celebrate excellence in film and television productions that are made in the province. Stargate series and movies are largely filmed in Vancouver. At this years Celebration and Gala Ceremonies for the Leos, which took place on May 8 and...
