The La Times recently caught up with Finding Nemo and Wall-e writer/director, Andrew Stanton, on his next flick for Disney, John Carter. This marks Stanton’s first foray into live-action and he couldn’t have picked a more ambitious project. Based from the novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Stanton will attempt to bring an old hero and sell it to a 21st century audience. During the interview, Stanton touches on why they decided to pass on Comic-Con, concept art, and how he approached this project. Check out the pieces of concept art and some excerpts from the interview:

2011′s funniest comedy, Bridesmaids, is a must-see. If you haven’t had the chance yet, I suggest you rush out to the theater immediately. The Paul Feig directed comedy stars Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, and Jon Hamm to name a few. The Judd Apatow produced comedy has already grossed over $60 million in two weeks at the box office and only cost the studio $32 million to produce, making it one of the most successful comedies of the year to-date. While Apatow is no stranger to success at the box office, this is the first time he’s had his hand in a mostly all female cast. This also marks a turning point for Wiig from supporting actress to the lead position.
If you’ve already seen the movie, then you’re probably itching for more. While a sequel is already in the works, maybe some outtakes will help keep you satisfied.

The Christopher Nolan directed sequel to The Dark Knight, aptly titled The Dark Knight Rises, seems to be taking it’s toll financially on Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures, two of Hollywood’s most profitable production companies. Having shared the costs and profit for such blockbuster films as 300 and The Hangover, they’ve also flinched in pain at recent failures such as Jonah Hex and Sucker Punch. The current co-financing and production deal between the two companies expires in 2013 and the future of the partnership has come into question over the negotiations to this summer’s upcoming blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises. The production costs for The Dark Knight were split 50/50 between Legendary and Warner Bros. and in turn grossed more than $1 billion worldwide and sold 16 million DVDs. The upcoming film, once again being directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale, is expected to cost at least $250 million to produce.

Yesterday, the legendary sci-fi creator Joss Whedon announced on his site, whedonesque.com, that filming on The Avengers officially begins today. After such successful shows and scripts, Marvel fans are hoping that he’s the right man for such an overwhelming film. Whedon made the below statement on his site about the start of this ambitious project that stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Clark Gregg, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Ruffalo, and Cobie Smulders.

Looks like Michael Bay‘s upcoming installment of Transformers: Dark of the Moon just got a little nerdier. Author, actor, and space explorer Leonard Nimoy has joined the cast as a voice talent. According to Entertainment Weekly, Nimoy will be lending his legendary voice to the character of Sentinel Prime, the predecessor to Optimus Prime, who’s seen in the teaser trailer. After crash landing on the moon, Sentinel Prime is brought back to earth by the Apollo 11 astronauts where he disguises himself as a firetruck throughout the major battle that takes place in Chicago.
You’re thinking to yourself, “Leornard Nimoy, so he was in Star Trek right?” Correct. He was also part of the 1986 Hasbro animated The Transformers: The Movie giving his voice to the character of Galvatron.

Justice League Will Have No Continuity With ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Superman: The Man of Steel’
While I think everyone is pretty excited for the release of the final installment of Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight trilogy, I personally have reserved expectations for the outcome of Zach Snyder‘s Superman: Man of Steel. With the recent news that Warner Brothers was prepping production for a 2013 film surrounding The Justice League, I think all comic nerds started to get a little excited. Until now.
At the premiere of his newest film Sucker Punch, Snyder sat down for a brief interview with HeyUGuys and the topic of whether his version of Superman would fit into The Justice League was touched upon.
‘It doesn’t. Like what Chris Nolan is doing and what I’m doing with Superman, what they’ll do with Justice League will be it’s own thing with it’s own Batman and own Superman. We’ll be over here with our movie and they...

I’ve been a fan of Gregg Araki since my junior year in high school. A friend turned me onto his most outrageous and hard-to-find film, Nowhere, the third film in his teen apocalypse trilogy. I’ve been addicted ever since. Following Nowhere, Araki has given us a cinematic art drama in the form of Mysterious Skin, which features amazing performances by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Elisabeth Shue, then a zany stoner comedy in the form of Smiley Face, showcasing the hilarious and greatly under-appreciated actress Anna Faris.
And while each of these films had a distinct ‘Araki’ feel to them, they were still missing what made the filmmaker great: sucking you into a superficial world of teen angst absurdity teeming on the edge of an apocalyptic event. Both Mysterious Skin and Smiley Face weren’t written by Araki. This made both films seem almost alien in content when compared to Araki’s older works.

Courtesy of Deadline, a press release from Essential Entertainment and Lion Rock Productions has been issued for the long awaited remake of the classic John Woo flick The Killer. The original 1989 flick featured Chow Yun-Fat as an assassin on the hunt for one last assignment in hopes of using his saved earnings to restore sight to a singer he had accidentally blinded in his past. A favorite among the genre, many have mixed feelings about a remake. The fact that Woo has decided to produce the flick can hopefully ease some of those fears. See below for the full release:
Los Angeles, 31 January 2011: Essential Entertainment has joined Lion Rock Productions in its remake of The Killer in 3D, currently in pre-production, which will be directed by John H. At the recent Inception DVD release party in Los Angeles, Indiewire caught up with the cast and crew, particularly soundtrack composer Hans Zimmer. The sought after composer has a busy year ahead with eleven films on his plate.
“I never planned it like this – it’s just that all my friends got busy at once,” he declared.
Zimmer starts the year off with the fourth installment of the popular Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, then he’ll work on the follow up to Sherlock Holmes, Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom, The Dark Knight Rises and most excitedly, Zack Snyder’s Superman. While this news was definitely a possibility, this is the first time it was confirmed.
During an interview with NBC San Diego, Zimmer discussed his working relationship with Christopher Nolan.

I recently had the chance to sit down with Edward Zwick, the screenwriter and director of the new flick Love and Other Drugs. While some may not find the name familiar, I’m sure you would know some of his work. Responsible for such films as Glory, Legends of the Fall, and The Last Samurai, Zwick has decided to dive back into the romantic comedy genre with Love and Other Drugs. First off, let me say how much I loved this film. Let’s be honest, romantic comedies have been done to death, but with Love and Other Drugs, Zwick brings us complex characters and a vintage 80′s feel that plays out well on screen.

Today’s Daily Distraction features Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson kicking all kinds of ass. Similar to the viral trailer for The Expendables, this shows exactly what we want from the film. Directed by George Tillman, Jr. the action flick also stars Billy Bob Thornton, Maggie Grace, Carla Gugino, Tom Berenger, Josh Clark, Moon Bloodgood, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. The rampage trailer is from Movieweb and as a bonus, you can also check out a new interactive trailer from the film over at Yahoo.
Synopsis: After 10 years in prison, Driver has a singular focus – to avenge the murder of his brother during the botched bank robbery that led to his imprisonment.
The Playlist also had a sneak peek at the soundtrack by Darren Aronofsky collaborator Clint Mansell, and they enjoyed it. The film seems like a nice throwback and a welcome return for Dwayne Johnson.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Roland Emmerich’s alien invasion flick, The Zone, is no more. While production was scheduled to begin next week, it has apparently been shut down.
“This is not a project (Emmerich) is pursuing at this time,” was the statement released from Emmerich’s team.
The alien invasion film was set to be directed in the style of recently popular ‘found footage’ or ‘low budget’ home footage flicks. Not much was known about The Zone, which was supposed to be filmed improv-based with little known actors. Peter Mackenzie and Brandon Scott were said to have played a journalist and a cameraman.
Could the demise of this movie be due to a premature scare of the ‘found footage’ genre decline? It’s hard to say as Paranormal Activity 2 recently did very well at the box office. The reason could lie in the Weinstein Co.’s recently...

Following up last year’s hugely successful underdog film Paranormal Activity was surely no easy task. As soon as I heard they were pumping out a sequel to the original I instantly cringed. Given how Pa was an underground cult hit that quickly blew up to amazing box office numbers, that similar track would be hard to replicate.
It happens many Many times in the horror genre. You happen upon a new interesting idea that unexpectedly gives you a hit, bringing in the cash and earning the film a classic status among horror fans, but is quickly ruined by a fast tracked, poorly put together sequel. Paranormal Activity 2 does for the original what Halloween 2 did for the original Halloween. With Paranormal Activity 2, we’re given a smartly thought out story that intertwines with the original and surpasses it. If the first gave you goosebumps, the second will definitely bring them back.

In a quote from Vulture, the one time contender for George Miller‘s Batman in the canceled Justice League: Mortal film, Armie Hammer (The Social Network) reveals some interesting information via his agent:
“I did talk to my people recently about [Zack Snyder’s film] for the first time, and I think they’re going a little older with Superman. I hear they’re going 35, 40.”
While this small bit of information doesn’t sound like much, it completely changes the casting rumors that are floating around. Hammer is 24, Brandon Routh is 31, and another fan favorite is Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm, who is 39. Hamm also worked with Snyder on his new film Sucker Punch, so anything could be possible at this point. While Routh is at the beginning of this range, he was supposedly contacted by Legendary and sent a trainer to ‘beef up’, but later retracted his statement when he spoke with News...

News from Deadline is that Producers Hunt Lowry and Mark Johnson are working with Adrian Vanderbosch and Isaac Testerman of Mysteria Film Group, who previously purchased the rights from the developers, Cyan Worlds, to bring Myst to the big screen.
Myst hit the computer gaming market in 1993 and went on to produce four top-selling sequels and become the biggest selling adventure game in history. While Myst does not have a simple linear narrative, it does have a very rich and multi-layered mythology. On September 24th, the Chris Sparling suspense flick Buried hit limited theaters across the country. The film stars, exclusively stars actually, Ryan Reynolds as Paul, a father and U.S. contractor working in Iraq. After an attack by a group of Iraqis, he wakes up to find he has been buried alive inside a coffin. With only a lighter and a cell phone, Paul is in a race against time to escape the claustrophobic death trap. The film is directed by Rodrigo Cortés, who does a wonderful job telling this story with obvious limitations. That’s right folks, the entire film takes place from within a coffin. No cut-aways, no exterior shots. Finding unique ways to capture this script with only one small environment to work in, Cortés does an amazing job keeping up the film’s pace and driving the suspense. Reynolds really goes above and beyond in this flick.

Interviewed: Edgar Wright and Brandon Routh
Did you have any inspiration for the opening titles of the film?
EW: Yeah. The first cut of the film we didn’t have opening titles, the titles were all at the end. If you permit me to name drop, Quentin Tarantino watched the film and his only note that he had, his only big note, is he said, “You should have the titles at the start”. Because, I think he said, “Let the audience settle in.” Because originally it started with Brian LeBarton playing the solo title and then it went straight to the film and if you’re sitting down it’s kind of like you need a little second to catch your breath.

At this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego, we got a glimpse at the Jon Favreau-directed Cowboys & Aliens. Based on the graphic novel of the same name, the sci-fi film stars Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. Bringing the Iron Man series to the big screen successfully has garnered Favreau an almost iconic status within the comic community.
Making his first appearance in Comic-Con history, Ford received a warm welcome (i.e. standing ovation) that lasted nearly 5 minutes before the crowd calmed down. With only four weeks of filming under his belt, Favreau still managed to piece together a short clip for all the fans to enjoy. Thanks to Screen Rant, here’s a run down of what was shown:

Shot with just a five person crew and a cast of two, Gareth Edwards’ team traveled through Guatemala, Belize and Mexico, finding and utilizing their locations and supporting actors as they went. Among all the chaos and craziness that is Comic-Con, IGN had a chance to speak with Underworld creator Len Wiseman about the possibility of his wife and main star Kate Beckinsale returning to the franchise.
Wiseman stated, “yes. That’s the plan. We’re both waiting to see what kind of story comes together. It’s just getting the script to a certain place where we’re both happy with it.”
While Beckinsale starred in the first two films of the franchise, she was absent from the third film which was crafted as a prequel to the other films. Wiseman was also absent from behind the camera, but stayed on board as a producer for the film. The possibility of the two re-uniting on a fourth film could give the franchise the missing gusto that it’s been needing.
Are you excited of the possibility of Beckinsale returning to Underworld?...

According to Production Weekly, who earlier tweeted that the new Wachowskis‘ film title CN9, has begun casting.
Little is known about the new Wachowskis‘ project (formerly the Wachowski Brothers) other than it’s a gay Iraq war picture about a homosexual American solider who falls in love with an Iraqi. It has also been described as a ” cinema verite-style treatment that begins in the near future and then spans back over years that include the current war in Iraq.” Early pitch footage has been reported to include the likes of Arianna Huffington and Jesse Ventura.
What does CN9 stand for? Unless it’s completely made up, CN9 is an abbreviation for the glossopharyngeal nerve;
–noun Anatomy . either of the ninth pair of cranial nerves, consisting of motor fibers that innervate the muscles of the pharynx, the soft palate, and the parotid glands, and of sensory fibers that conduct impulses to the brain from the pharynx,...

According to a conversation with Blackbook, Mark Ruffalo is working on his next script for his sophomore directing project.
“I’m working on a script right now,” Ruffalo said. “It’s about a single dad raising a kid in Hollywood on his own. He’s an ex-porn star, ex-street poet, ex-actor, ex-junkie. It is really funny and really poignant, and they have a beautiful relationship between the two of them. It’s good, I think. The big part right now is bringing in the humor of it. Mining for the gold nuggets is the real work.”
Although his directorial debut with Sympathy For Delicious wasn’t received well critically, he’s been working hard on hammering out the script for his sophomore effort. Hopefully, his second release will go smoother. “I learned a lot making [Sympathy]. I made every mistake you can possibly make,” Ruffalo told Vulture about his directing experience to-date.

With all remakes there runs the risk of ruining the original or improving upon it. With Breck Eisner‘s The Crazies, a remake of the 1973 George A. Romero original, we get the latter. Known for the 2005 blockbuster Sahara, Eisner has done a great job reinventing this film and turning into a shocker for the current desensitized generation. Not only is the story inventive, but the direction of the film sets us up for great suspense and thrills that are lacking in most modern horror films. The writers, Scott Kosar & Ray Wright, did a great job with the dialog and setting this film up with the right atmosphere.
This ‘dream turned nightmare’ starts off showing us glimpses of the small all-American town of Ogden Marsh, where no one bothers lock their doors and everyone is on a first name basis. Things quickly go awry as residents start acting strangely and suddenly...

Word has hit the net that the infamous, timeless novel The Catcher in the Rye, by the late J.D. Salinger, may finally be optioned for the film treatment. Apparently the inheritors of the rebellious author’s estate are feeling the weight of the estate tax and are considering selling the rights to the beloved book.
While this news is still considered a rumor, it’s perking up the interest of fans and writers that would love to take a crack at writing the screenplay. With practically every classic novel adapted for the screen, there always runs the risk of pissing off the original fanbase, i.e. those who grew up reading it.
The Catcher in the Rye, which is widely known for it’s teen angst and strong theme of rebellion, is no exception to this rule. Many believe turning the classic novel into a film goes against the very...

Appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night, Lauren Graham confirmed earlier reports that she will indeed be joining the cast of the upcoming Wes Craven directed Scream 4. Graham, who is widely known for her role of Lorelai Gilmore on The Gilmore Girls will be playing the role of Kate, the mother of Emma Roberts‘ character Jill Kessler.
Graham joins the Scream 4 cast of Courtney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell from the original trilogy along with newcomers Emma Roberts, Hayden Penettiere, Rory Culkin and Lake Bell.
Scream director Wes Craven recently told EW, “we have fun with the idea of endless sequels, or “sequelitis” as Kevin [Williamson] calls it in the script. Sid goes through these three horrendous things, and Stab was based on those horrible things. And then they’ve been taken by a studio and run into the ground in a series of sequels.

According to AP, the Moulin Rouge director said he hasn’t decided on his next project and is juggling between three movie projects and two stage productions.
Details about his movie projects were given via his collaboration on a charity auction with partner Catherine Martin where one lucky winner will get the chance to appear as a featured extra in the next motion picture by Luhrmann.
