For a fan, the pinnacle of liking a band is seeing them live. While the first round of summer concerts is over, there are plenty of tours and opportunities to see big name bands remaining. The hard rock genre has a lot of heavy hitters and with spring and early summer there have been plenty of new releases bands are looking to support in front of a live audience.
One of the bands that everyone should obviously see that’s not on the list is Black Sabbath. The reason I left them off is because they last toured in 2012 (2005 before that) briefly before Tony Iommi was diagnosed with lymphoma and I have never seen them.
Outside of dealing with a crowd, seeing a band live tends to be the purest form of their music. No mastering, no pro tools (usually) and no holds barred. Here’s a list of 10 hard...

When they're not developing popular shooters, Epic Games sure know how to put an emotional trailer together. With every "Gears of War" release, the company issues forth a trailer that incorporates a seemingly out-of-place, sad song played over crazy action. The first "Gears" trailer used the haunting "Mad World," as sung by Gary Jules. "Gears of War 2" video featured Devotchka's "How It Ends." Today, Epic has released the latest trailer for "Gears of War 3" and – big surprise – it features a real tear-jerker from Mazzy Star, "To Dust."

Glen highlights the tracks that tend to get aired just a little too often in modern day movies...
There are quite literally millions of songs available on this planet called Earth, catering to all ages and tastes. But in spite of the vastness of this musical back catalogue, there seems to be a small percentage that crop up time and time again in films, depriving other songs of much deserved royalties.
In an attempt to encourage the movers and shakers of the movie industry (like they actually read this) to spread the love, I thought I’d highlight a few songs that have been over-used in the movies.
Just to clarify, I don’t necessarily hate the songs included (except Who Let The Dogs Out, but that’s not really a song). It’s just that I’ve heard enough of them in the movies, and think they should be...

In the rock world, it's difficult to stay relevant for five years, let alone stay vital for 30. But R.E.M., the band who essentially invented indie rock, have done just that, and they're about to take another bold step through the 21st century with their new album Collapse Into Now (which hits stores on Tuesday, March 8th). 00:00:00: Death Race 2, also known as Death Race: Frankenstein Lives, is the direct to DVD prequel to 2008's Death Race, which was allegedly a prequel to 1975's Death Race 2000. It's not a video game movie, but it damn well should be. Death Race 2 gives us the backstory on the character Frankenstein, the mysterious metal-faced driver who died in the first scenes of Death Race. I don't want to type the word Death Race anymore. Our Blockbuster gift card was sacrificed to the lone rental store still located in Burbank. I pulled and pulled on the handle, wondering why the hell the store was closed at 9 Pm on a Tuesday. That's when the employee gestured that it was a Push door. I had finally entered the proper level of mental mediocracy to appreciate this fine piece of cinematic entertainment. On Unrated Blu-ray no less.

The song "Bodies" by Dallas hard rockers, Drowning Pool, already has an infamous reputation. It has long been known to be a favorite of Us troops, often played just before heading into a combat zone by the younger soldiers, much to the discomfort of those who believe that playing it glorifies the grislier, if often necessary aspects of military service -- killing people.
The song has surfaced in a video called "America: Your Last Memory In A Terrorist Country!" allegedly posted by Jared Lee Loughner, the mentally disturbed Arizona shooter who killed six people and horribly wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tuscson over the weekend. In the video, an American flag sits planted in the parched ground amid arid Arizona flora, and the mind numbingly repetitive song starts up. Drowning Pool have responded to reports linking their music to the recent shooting in Arizona, which left six people dead and congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords critically injured. Jared Loughner, the 22-year-old arrested for Saturday's attack, reportedly listed as a YouTube favourite an unofficial video featuring the band's 2001 single 'Bodies' and a masked man burning an American flag. In response to media reports speculating on a link between the clip and the shooting, a statement on the band's official website read: "We were devastated this weekend to learn of the tragic events that occurred in Arizona and that our music (more)...

Jared Lee Loughner, the 22-year-old alleged shooter behind Saturday's deadly rampage in Tucson, appears to have had an obsession with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. He's now being charged with attempted assassination, among other counts.
Federal officials have filed five criminal charges against Jared Lee Loughner, the alleged shooter behind Saturday's deadly rampage in Tucson. Loughner faces counts of an attempted assassination of a member of Congress, two counts of murder, and two counts of attempted murder-but FBI Director Robert Mueller says more charges could be on the way under a domestic terrorism statute. Loughner will be arraigned Monday.

A search of Loughner's home turned up disturbing evidence of an obsession with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, whom he shot in the head at close range on Saturday. Among other items, officials discovered an envelope with the words "I planned ahead," "Giffords," and "My assassination" stored in a safe.

Today is Veterans Day in the United States. While Memorial Day pays tribute to people who gave their lives in military service to the country, Veterans Day has a more celebratory air. It's a day reserved for all veterans of service across all of the branches of the military, whether they served during wartime or simply gave their service in times of peace. In many ways, the military is the most important government program running, as those in service not only defend us but also provide assistance in dangerous areas around the world and assist those in need within our borders as well.
Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11 because it is the anniversary of the end of World War I (an Armistice was signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, signifying the end of major combat in one of the most brutal...

Nearly five months after its release, the sonic punch of Godsmack's third album to debut at #1, The Oracle, is still leaving bruises (the latest single "Love-Hate-Sex-Pain" is perched at #15 on the Billboard Rock Songs chart) and the band is currently supporting the record on a major tour with Five Finger Death Punch and Drowning Pool. But for the moment at least, frontman Sully Erna is more excited about his recently released world-music-inflected solo album, Avalon, which debuted at #24 on this week's Billboard 200.
"Godsmack will always be my main priority. I know that, but right now, Avalon is my baby," Erna said on a break between tour dates. "It's a complete departure from Godsmack, and that's why I love it so much. As a musician, I like to express different sides of myself,...

Activision and the "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" team paced themselves publicizing the full set list of more than 90 tracks that's slated to appear in the game, but they've put it all out there as of this week, and before you even make it to Soundgarden's full "Telephantasm" album that's coming bundled in the first shipment of units, you'll have a long list of core game tunes to thrash through including The Hives' "Tick Tick Boom" and multiple Megadeth and Rush numbers.
"We engaged our fans to find out what they really wanted and then hand-picked over 90 tracks that deliver the ultimate rock experience," Guitar Hero vice president of music affairs Tim Riley said in a press release. "From the new guitar controller to the gameplay to the on-disc set list, 'Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock' is truly a return to rock."

Activision and Neversoft haven't publicized all of the "90 plus" tracks it's promised for "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" yet, but they have gotten about two thirds of the way there since our last update. Rush fans should be especially pleased by the list after the jump, which contains every track confirmed thus far.

It's a great time to be a sports fan at the moment. The knockout round of the World Cup is in full swing, several different baseball races offer new thrills every day and NBA free agency is re-aligning the league. But the biggest event of the weekend is most certainly Ufc 116, which will play host to the biggest heavyweight fight in decades. The former Ncaa wrestling All-American, WWE star and reigning heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will square off against All-American football player and wrestler Shane "The Engineer" Carwin (so nicknamed because he actually owns a degree in mechanical engineering from the Colorado School of Mines).
Both men have dominated the mixed martial arts scene since their respective debuts. Lesnar stumbled in his first Ufc fight but since then has been a total killer, knocking out legends and former champs like Randy Couture and Frank Mir. Carwin has been on a similar tear,...

Today is Veterans Day in the United States, a day of remembrance set aside to pay tribute to the men and women who serve in the military. Politics aside, a life of service is a difficult but necessary sacrifice, and those who choose to put their country and their sense of duty ahead of personal issues should be rewarded far more profoundly than they are.
Coincidentally, today also marks a key date in military history. On November 11, 1918, the first World War officially ended. Having run out of supplies and facing almost total annihilation from all sides, Germany signed an armistice with the Allies in France (poetically, the deal was signed at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year). All told, nine million soldiers died and 21 million more were wounded over the course of the four year conflict, which spread across central Europe and...

Assuming the wet, frosty weather in New York cooperates, the 2009 World Series will kick off tonight at Yankee Stadium. The New York Yankees (featuring perennial All-Stars Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez) will square off against the Philadelphia Phillies (who are the defending champs) in a best-of-seven series that will decide who the best team in baseball is. Unlike in past years, these two teams match up relatively evenly, as they both have explosive lineups, solid starting pitching and deep bullpens. According to most online betting parlors, the Yankees are the slight favorite, though it's really anybody's Series.
But that doesn't mean we can't handicap the teams anyway, and there's really only one way to really decide which squad will be truly dominant: Analyzing the at-bat music for key players on either side. A relatively new tradition at ballparks, just about every player in Major League Baseball has a song (or...
