While working in a remote woods, wildlife researcher Marco Contrada’s studies lead him to an abandoned village deep in the Italian countryside where he becomes trapped due to flooding. His presence in the village unleashes a horrifying evil. This ancient curse would like nothing better than Marco’s guts lying in a pool of blood at his feet… but only once it’s had its terrifying fun.
Well that’s the official synopsis. My synopsis?
Wildlife researcher spends the majority of the movie tagging wildlife, setting up cameras, recording and reviewing data, and generally having a bit of a wander around the forest. Then some scary shit happens – the usual dead animals, weird noises etc., plus a bit of found-footage from Marco’s cameras – all scored by some of the creepiest music...

Revenge horror Big Bad Wolves has won the best film prize at the Fantasia International Film Festival, which has revealed record attendance figures for its 17th edition.
Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado’s Big Bad Wolves picked up the Cheval Noir Award for Best Film.
A statement from the jury said: “With elements of horror, crime thriller, revenge drama, and wicked black comedy, Big Bad Wolves takes genre-bending to bold new levels. This sense of originality, along with its subversive political subtext, assured visual style, and impeccable ensemble cast, is what separates the film from the rest of the pack.”
Directing duo Keshales and Papushado also picked up the award for best screenplay. The Ucm-produced film tells the story of a series of brutal murders, and how they impact on the lives of a vigilante police detective, the main suspect and the father of a victim.

Pupils of fright, are you still with me? Are your truncated attention spans medicated with caffeine and hashtags? Good. Cause we are far from over, despite the fact that Fantasia Fest 2013 is winding down, soon returning to its slimy nest after another epic edition. Enough about me though, let’s get on with the backlog:
Les Gouffres (France, 2012)
Not being someone who shies away from the term highbrow, I try to take in as much substance as possible, feeding my left hemisphere with “art”. Much like vegetables, you also need your daily brain candy. However, if art is like pornography (you know it when you see it), then Les Gouffres is also like pornography: I know that I saw it.
Directed by Antoine Barraud, Les Gouffres tells the story of a woman’s descent into complete madness, catalyzed by her refusal to deal with the role society has chosen for her.

We were recently given the heads up on a trailer for a really creepy looking Italian film called Across the River (Oltre il Guado). If nothing else, this two-minute preview proves that you can give people goosebumps without a word of dialogue.
Across the River was directed by Lorenzo Bianchini (Custodes Bestiae), who co-wrote it with Michela Bianchini. The movie stars Marco Marchese, Renzo Gariup and Lidia Zabrieszach.
Look for more on this one as we get it, but for now dig the trailer and hit the Splattercontainer.com link below for a few additional photos.
Across the River Synopsis
Ethnologist/naturalist Marco Contrada reaches the wooded areas of eastern Friuli on the border with Slovenia to carry out his usual work on the census of wild animals. Marco observes wild boar and deer, looks for traces of predators and maintains traps and cameras scattered over the forest to film animals.

While Fantastic Fest seems to satisfy my needs when it comes to a genre film festival, I have always wanted to attend Fantasia. I have heard & seen so much about it that, as a genre fan, it makes me salivate. Luckily, Fantastic Fest seems to nab some titles from their extraordinary lineup so I get to experience some of their programming.
Today, Fantasia has released their first wave of titles. Those lucky bastards get to see live Clive Barker stage theater, see the finale of the Cornetto trilogy and more. Read below for the full list.

[Updated with new poster art]Though scarcely known outside of his native Italy - or even inside it, honestly - writer-director Lorenzo Bianchini remains, to my mind, one of the most intriguing talents in the region. The man simply has a gift for mood and character that results in some truly compelling work regardless of any budget limitations and his 2006 effort Custodes Bestiae and his 2001 offering Lidris Cuadrade Di Tre are personal favorites. All of which adds up to a certain satisfaction coming with the news that Bianchini is now in post on a new feature titled Oltre Il Guado (Across The River).
