“I wake up in the middle of the first movie that I’m the lead actor in, and realize that there’s a gay subtext in it,” says Mark Patton in the first trailer for “Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street.” Patton is best known for playing Jesse Walsh in “Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge,” who gets possessed by Freddy Kruger through reoccurring nightmares. The film became notorious for its obvious homoerotic subtext, the fallout from which Patton says he never recovered as a closeted young actor in 1980’s Hollywood. “Scream, Queen” traces the ways the film’s themes intersected with Patton’s life, and contributed to his eventual retreat from Hollywood.
“A horror film only works if it taps into a paranoia of a particular time and place,” says Film Studies professor Andrew Scahill in the trailer. “‘Nightmare on Elm Street 2’ is about the danger of not repressing enough.

31 years ago, the sequel to the surprise hit A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) was rushed into theaters to capitalize on that film’s box office success. A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985) made $21 million at the box office, a mere $4 million less than its predecessor, and certainly more than enough to keep the burgeoning franchise going. But alas, for poor Freddy, the wrath for this film over the years has withered its reputation to whispers and snickers, with the occasional outburst of foaming conjecture. I don’t get it. I love Freddy’s Revenge.
So why all the shade? First of all, Freddy’s Revenge has the misfortune of sitting in-between the original classic and a follow-up that most consider the best of the sequels, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Both of those films have the involvement of the late horror guru Wes Craven...

Long unavailable for home viewing, Robert Altman’s 1982 title Come Back to the 5 and Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean has languished as a remote, minor title of the auteur’s filmography, trotted out to devotees at retrospectives. Based on the play by Ed Graczyk and featuring a bevy of eclectic actresses, it’s often and unfairly lumped into consideration with Altman’s other adaptations of stage material from the time period, including David Rabe’s Streamers (1983), Sam Shepard’s Fool For Love (1985) and Christopher Durang’s Beyond Therapy (1987). Often described as typically Altmanesque with its examination of Americana, a dialogue heavy showcase of melodrama squeezed from the banalities of everyday existence, at last it’s available for a wider appreciation, ripe for a recuperation as more than a mere trifle lost in a flood of greater titles from an American auteur.

The ultimate and award-winning retrospective on the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, Never Sleep Again (review), is getting ready to hit Blu-ray this January; and if you've never seen it or just want to see it in hi-def, here's the chance you've been waiting for!
Be warned: This is the same exact cut with the same features from the Collector's Edition DVD. There's nothing new, but honestly, what else could there possibly be left to say? It covers it All, and the remake in no way warrants mention.
Look for it online and in stores on January 21st, 2014, via Image Entertainment!
Synopsis

After the surprise success of A Nightmare on Elm Street, there was no doubt in the studio executives’ minds that a sequel had to be made. After Nightmare’s creator, Wes Craven, dropped out (citing his belief that the film didn’t need a sequel), David Chaskin was brought on board to write the script and Jack Sholder (Alone in the Dark) was tapped to direct. Set a couple of months after the original, the sequel revolves around teenager Jesse Walsh (Mark Patton) and his family, who have just moved into the troubled house that belonged to Nancy Thompson, the previous film’s heroine. Freddy, far from being defeated, soon pays Jesse a visit in his dreams, telling the teen the many plans he has in store for him. Freddy wants to come out of the dream world and into reality and Jesse is the perfect tool; just weak-minded and...

Let me introduce you to the 'Final Guy'.
So we all pretty much know the basic slasher film tropes that earn a horror character the 'final girl' title, right? For those of you at the back who fell asleep during your last film theory lesson; it's pretty much as it sounds – the last character left after the dust, blood and all kinds of unspeakable carnage has finally settled. She's the one that demonstrates exceptional perseverance in the face of abject terror and most importantly, the one who subdues the maniac once and for all -or until the next sequel at least. This character just so happens to be a girl because that was the gender of choice for those wonderful folk who decided their main hero (or victim) when writing for this ostensibly male dominated genre.
How about we focus on someone a little more under-appreciated by the horror audiences and theorists – the 'final' guy.

This is the “Nightmare on Elm Street” franchises movie that people love to bash and hate. Holy exploding birds - people hate this movie?! There are various reasons as to why. Some people’s reasons are valid and others are only valid if you are uncomfortable with certain subject matter. First released by Charles Band’s Media Home Entertainment and featuring awesome poster and marketing designs, this Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge is a personal favorite of mine.
Freddy haunts the dreams of a teenage boy (Jesse) in the same house where he hounded Nancy in the original movie. What makes this movie different from its predecessor is that as the movie progresses, Jesse finds himself physically in the places of the crime. This concept also deviates from Freddy entering each persons dreams and killing them alone. Freddy’s goal is to invade...

You can go out to the store, especially this time of year, and grab some pretty disturbing merch. These past few weeks alone I've seen animatronics of guys puking in a barrel, mincing body parts with a cleaver and, an especially gruesome one, of a torso with a giant rat gnawing at the innards as he shrieks and tries to crawl away. Pretty good, but there is something commercial and controlled about them. If you want simple runaway madness, unencumbered by corporate limitations, look no further than Lee Howard's QuiET RoOM BeARs.
Howard originally made the first of the BeARs as an entry into a "Rosemary's Baby Shower" themed Halloween Party. He figured every baby needs a teddy, but this little Hellspawn is going to need something special. So he dug deep into his rotting mind and came up with the concept of the QuiET RoOM BeARs, A group...

If Rock and Shock 2011 doesn't get here soon Glenn Ciano is going to burst. Why is that, you ask? Sure, there is an over abundance of 80's style. Heck, there is even a dance number in which the main character dances across his bedroom trying to be cool dancing to a then trendy 80's song. These elements for this sequel sure are goofy, but there is a certain charm to all this goofiness. It makes the characters real. Who hasn't done some goofy dance moves when they think no one is around? What teen hasn't gone through a phase of listening to the trendy songs and trying to dress that way? Did you feel it?
Cher!
Did you feel the tingling?
It's a little known fact that the word causes a biological reaction in the gay brain, resulting in a tingling sensation, followed by an involuntary "Squee!," culminating in what's scientifically referred to as a Chergasm.
Well get ready for an all-out Cherplosion (I promise that's my last Cher pun) with the November 2nd release of "Cher: The Film Collection."
The box set contains six Cher films: Good Times, Chastity, Silkwood, Moonstruck, Mermaids and Tea With Mussolini.
Wait a minute. What?
I agree that Silkwood, Moonstruck, Mermaids, and the underrated Tea are must-haves, but those first two movies should have stayed in the time capsule, especially when there are so many other classic Cher films to pick from. I realize that they may not have had the "rights" or whatever to include them, but that's not going to stop my hackles from raising.

With production on Never Sleep Again under way, this writer had a chance to check in with the documentary's directing team of Daniel Farrands and Andrew Kasch to see how things are progressing with their project that explores the Elm Street legacy.
"Never Sleep Again is going amazingly well," said Farrands. "It's funny, but this feels like everything is coming full circle. I did a Halloween movie when I was younger, then I spent a few years in the Friday the 13th universe. So now I am working with Nightmare on Elm Street, and it's definitely a dream come true."
Generally, when creating a documentary, you tend to miss out on a lot of stars who maybe are reluctant to talk about past projects. This is not a phenomenon that Kasch and Farrands are experiencing at all with Never Sleep Again. In fact, the duo have found themselves elated at...

Today this scribe had the opportunity to visit the set of the upcoming A Nightmare on Elm Street documentary, Never Sleep Again, for one of their bigger days - actor Mark Patton who portrayed Jesse in the second franchise installment was on hand to talk about his very own Elm Street days.
Patton, who moved on from Hollywood shortly after Freddy's Revenge, came up to Los Angeles from Mexico to talk with the team behind Never Sleep Again and was gracious enough to chat briefly with Dread Central before he got started.
Twenty-five years after Patton took on the role of Jesse, the actor now weighs in on why he thinks the Nightmare franchise still remains so popular.
Patton said, "I think Noes is so popular because the franchise taps into an idea that goes into the depths of people's dreams and it's very easy for people to project themselves into that situation.

Chicago – While adult comedies continue to rake in the big bucks at the box office, adult dramas continue to plunge in popularity, particularly dramas centering on the war in Iraq. When a brilliant edge-of-your-seat thriller like Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” or a galvanizing documentary like “Taxi to the Dark Side” can’t even manage to find an audience, a tiny horror picture like “The Objective” doesn’t stand a chance.
DVD Rating: 2.5/5.0
“The Objective” opened in a few theaters earlier this year, performed badly, and has now been unceremoniously dumped into stores. Not an impressive feat for “The Blair Witch Project” co-director Daniel Myrick. At least the new film by his “Witch” partner, Eduardo Sanchez, was chosen for the latest “Ghost House Underground” collection.
The Objective was released on DVD on October 13th, 2009.

Current events inform these two genre films: Daniel Myrick’s The Objective takes place against the backdrop of the war in the Middle East, while Jeff Fisher’s Killer Movie puts a horrific spin on the endless reality-television trend. For The Blair Witch Project’s Myrick, The Objective marks a return to the scenario of a group of people venturing into forbidding territory where mysterious forces threaten them, while Fisher has intimate knowledge of his film’s specific milieu, having served time on the likes of The Real World/Road Rules and The Simple Life. But while the former effectively makes an already harrowing situation worse with the introduction of the supernatural, the latter doesn’t come up with anything that’s as scary as, say, the prospect of sitting through a whole season of Paris Hilton hijinx. Myrick, who scripted The Objective with Mark A. Patton and Wesley Clark Jr.,...

Release Date: Feb. 6 (limited)
Director: Daniel Myrick
Writers: Daniel Myrick, Mark A. Patton and Wesley Clark Jr.
Cinematographer: Stephanie Martin
Starring: Jonas Ball, Matthew R. Anderson, Jon Huertas, Sam Hunter, Jeff Prewett
Studio/Run Time: IFC Films, 104 mins.
Whatever else he may do, director Daniel Myrick will always have the words "Blair Witch Project" attached to his name. Judging from his work on The Objective, that may be the way he likes it, since the film in large part reprises what Blair Witch did earlier but without all the faux-cinema-verite trappings. Jonas Ball plays a CIA agent searching for a massive radiation silhouette spotted by spy satellites in Afghanistan. With him is a small group of special ops soldiers, assigned to protect him from what may lie in wait for them in the post-9/11 country. The group soon finds itself lost in the desert and under attack by some unknown supernatural force.

One could say that The Objective, which takes place in Afghanistan, isn’t a political film, but why would you want to? It is, but in the most even-keeled manner I have ever seen. And for that reason I want to salute (no pun intended) this movie and tell you about my experience.
Politics and horror. Oil and vinegar. Peanut butter and jelly. Sure, you could separate the two and digest each by their lonesome, but why would you want to? Horror films, just being what they are—horrific—are by their very nature political films. That’s not a bad thing. They and the rest of the transgressives have made a life of pushing up against what is acceptable. To those of...
