The highly talented Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva was named this year's Wta Newcomer of the Year thanks to her meteoric rise that culminated with a place in the world's Top 60.
Between 2022 and 2023, no player on the women's tour enjoyed a seismic climb into the Top 100 than Mirra Andreeva. A year ago, the 16-year-old was World No. 405 but soared as high as No. 46 (career-best ranking) during a remarkable 2023 season.
Andreeva is the fifth Russian to win this Wta award category, following the footsteps of Anna Kournikova (1996), Svetlana Kuznetsova (2002), Maria Sharapova (2003), and Daria Saville (2015) - who played under the Russian flag for six years before switching her nationality.
It has even escaped tennis fans' minds that Andreeva was plying her trade on junior events at the start of last season. She began the year on a high note, reaching the 2023 Australian Open girls' final, where she lost to compatriot Alina Korneeva.

At least 14 tennis players have confirmed their participation in an upcoming exhibition tennis tournament to be played in the Russian port city of St. Petersburg.
Obviously, organizing a tennis tournament in Russia in the current climate is subject to controversy from many quarters. One Ukrainian account on X with the name Ukrainian Tennis Btu dug out disturbing information about this tournament and its financiers.
The account alleges that Gazprom (who own private military battalions) are the sponsors of this event and, together with the company CEO and media partners, have been openly supporting the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Several fans have voiced concerns about the number and identity of players who have committed to play at this event, considering that the Atp and Wta have suspended staging tennis tournaments in Russia and Belarus since the war in Ukraine began in 2022.

Petra Kvitova has withdrawn from the 2023 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart due to a reported foot injury.
Fans were eagerly anticipating her first-round match against Russian player Anastasia Potapova, especially in light of the recent tension surrounding their political views. Kvitova had previously expressed her belief that Russian players should not participate in the Olympics, leading to backlash from former Wta player Svetlana Kuznetsova, who accused Kvitova of 'Russophobia'.
Potapova, for her part, made her own statement at Indian Wells by wearing a Spartak Moscow jersey. The stage was set for an electrifying showdown in Stuttgart, which would be surely watched by many, especially because of the handshake as the tennis community often says, but fate had other plans.
In an announcement, two-time Wimbledon champion Kvitova expressed her regret for not being able to compete in Stuttgart due to her foot injury.
"I'm really sorry I can't play in Stuttgart this year.

The draw for the 2023 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart was released and it's full of high-profile clashes.
The Wta 500 event in Stuttgart runs from April 17th to 23rd and the tournament is one of the most popular of its category on the Wta Tour. This year, the winner won't be rewarded just with prize money and points but also a brand new Porsche Taycan Turbo S Sport Turismo and so there is a lot to fight for in Stuttgart.
Last year, Iga Swiatek lifted the trophy and the Pole is back to defend her title in 2023. The first-seeded Swiatek has a bye in the first round as all top four seeds, and in the second round, she will play against Qinwen Zheng or a qualifier.
One of the most interesting first-round matches is between the eighth-seeded Maria Sakkari and former world no. 1 Karolina Pliskova, with the winner taking on Ekaterina Alexandrova or Donna Vekic.

Serena Williams' victory in the second round at Wimbledon Friday didn't start off on such a high note. After losing an opening-set tiebreaker, she slammed her racket into the court five times and threw it backwards. "I was just really angry," Williams told The Guardian. "I had a lot of chances. [Christina McHale] got really lucky on some shots. She just was playing great. I was a little disappointed in myself at that point." Despite the rough start, the 34-year-old world champion won the final set over fellow American McHale. After the match, Williams was fined $10,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct and joked...
