Fresh from a career-best win over World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, home favorite Alex de Minaur was grilled by a journalist with a question about a marriage proposal.
On Wednesday, De Minaur became the first Australian to beat a reigning World No. 1 on home turf since 1996. Despite a lackluster effort against Djokovic at last year's Australian Open, the man nicknamed "Demon" gave the home fans something to cheer about this time at the United Cup.
A composed performance by de Minaur in Perth, aided by the Serb's injury woes, gave Australia a foothold in the tie, which Ajla Tomljanovic eventually sealed. The host nation will play Saturday's semifinal against Germany in Syndey.
While much of post-match talk was about de Minaur earning the finest win of his career, one curious journalist asked the Aussie whether he was contemplating proposing to his girlfriend Katie Boulter - the top-ranked British woman in the...

The 2024 United Cup is upon us, and we have many nations going head to head as many former and current players, such as Lleyton Hewitt, will serve as team captains.
The United Cup features many nations competing against each other in a pretty unique team format. Each team will have team captains who will guide their teams throughout the competitions, handling the nominations.
Some pretty big names among the captains include former players such as Lleyton Hewitt for Australia. He's been handling the men's national team for a long time, so this will hardly be difficult for him.
Some other former players have never been in a situation like this, and for them, it might get a bit more tricky. Notable other player coaches include Petros Tsitsipas for Greece, Edouard Roger-Vasselin for France, and Wesley Koolhof for the Netherlands.

Boris Becker and Nick Kyrgios have been beefing on social media lately after the Australian commented about former tennis greats, including the German.
Kyrgios is an outspoken individual who doesn't particularly care whether you like that. He's going to tell you what he thinks, and he certainly did in a recent interview with the Athletic when he compared tennis eras.
While tennis stars are generally quite complimentary of past legends, Kyrgios dissed the legacy of Becker and others by implying that they would struggle today.
Obviously, the comments went viral, with some agreeing with him and some disagreeing with him. At face value, the quality of tennis today is probably greater than in the past as simply everything evolved.
There is better equipment, better training, and better nutrition today, so it's natural to assume that today's tennis players are superior to those in the past.
And yet, comparing eras doesn't work.

Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi, the two central pillars in Jannik Sinner's coaching team, have won the 2023 Atp Coach of the Year Award.
The pair are credited and recognized for their immense contribution to turning Sinner into an elite athlete. Last season, the Italian cracked many landmarks in his burgeoning young career, chief among them winning his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto.
Sinner equaled the previous best ranking of an Italian player on the Atp Tour (Adriano Panatta) by becoming World No. 4 for the first time at the start of October after defeating Daniil Medvedev to win the China Open in Beijing.
Overall, the 22-year-old won four Atp singles titles last season, the most he has managed in a single season and on par with his previous career-best year in 2021. Sinner was also an influential member of the Italian team that won its first Davis Cup title in 47 years last month in Malaga.

Nick Kyrgios made a contentious claim while comparing the sport of tennis between two different generations and eras.
Throughout his career, Kyrgios has always been synonymous with speaking his mind irrespective of how much stick he receives from the internet. As such, he's been a polarizing figure in tennis and has never shied from making controversial statements on many tennis-related topics.
Recently, he sat down for an interview with the Athletic, where he made comparisons of today's game with the decades gone by. Kyrgios believes modern tennis is better because it is being played in a fast-paced environment.
The Australian tennis star is of the notion that tennis has evolved significantly, so much so that you could easily spot even the serving speeds of the players in the past decades to those of the current era.

In 2018, the 24-year-old won his first Newcombe Medal, which he shared with former Australian Wta player and three-time Grand Slam winner Ashleigh Barty. The award recognizes the most talented and successful Australian tennis players each year.
A second Newcombe Medal for de Minaur comes after his most consistent season to date, where he won his first Atp 500 event at the Acapulco Open and helped Australia to reach the Davis Cup final in November.
When speaking about his second Newcombe Medal, and whilst reflecting on his achievement, de Minaur expressed gratitude for receiving the award yet again and shared his thanks to the medal's namesake, John 'Newk' Newcombe.

Alexander Zverev backed former Atp player Lleyton Hewitt after the Australian criticized the Davis Cup format following the Davis Cup final.
Lleyton Hewitt has been quite open about his distaste for the current Davis Cup format, criticizing it multiple times. He did it again after the Davis Cup Finals, where Italy beat Australia in two matches.
As somebody who played in the old format in the Rod Laver Arena, Hewitt can't understand the reasoning for this current one. There are no home and away legs, which basically kills the atmosphere in 90 % of these ties, which goes against the essence of the competition.
Zverev has held similar views ever since the format changed, even going as far as refusing to play for Germany in a competition that wasn't the Davis Cup anymore.
He ultimately played but he wasn't particularly happy with it and he's not the only one. The most baffling...

For the second year in a row, it was heartbreak and agony for Team Australia, who finished runners-up at the Davis Cup.
Jannik Sinner inspired Italy to their first Davis Cup success since 1976, leaving the nearly-men in green and gold crushed. The second-most successful team in the Davis Cup competition will be back next year to have another shot for title No. 28.
Despite the stark improvement in each of the past two years with a squad replete with talent, with four players ranked in the world's Top 56, including their top-ranked talisman Alex de Minaur (12th), it is hard not to overstate the difference Nick Kyrgos would have made had he been fit.
Obviously, Kyrgios' participation at the event would have been unlikely, even if he made a miraculous last-ditch recovery. Aside from questionable fitness concerns, the 28-year-old has a strained relationship with the country's team captain, Lleyton Hewitt.

Italy defeated Australia in the 2023 Davis Cup final, and Australian Team Captain Lleyton Hewitt had some words to say about it afterward.
The former player has been a very vocal critic of this type of Davis Cup. He's not the only one, of course, because many former and current players have spoken out against the format, which goes against what the competition has been historically.
As someone who experienced the old format, Hewitt laments the fact that Australia is playing far away from home when they could have played the competition back home in an amazing atmosphere.
Malaga did its best and had a decent atmosphere all things considered, which Hewitt recognized, but it's still not the same.
It's been a great week in terms of our performance, and we gave ourselves an opportunity. Yeah, Malaga has put on a great event in terms of what they can do with the format that they've got,...

Thanasi Kokkinakis was supposed to be part of the Australian Davis Cup Team at the 2023 Davis Cup Finals, but he won't because of an injury.
Thanasi Kokkinakis endured a really heartbreaking career. After breaking out as a teenager, the Australian kept battling injuries for years. This year was the healthiest he's ever been, and it reflected in his results as he managed to record some important wins.
As such, he was expected to be a vital part of the Australian Davis Cup Team, but that won't be happening as he got injured.
He was in action a few weeks ago back home in Australia, playing some Atp Challenger events, but he twisted his ankle at one of them, forcing him to abandon plans of playing in the Davis Cup. Team Captain Lleyton Hewitt confirmed it.
Well, he got injured. He played a tournament in Sydney a few weeks ago and twisted his ankle.

Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune are natural record-breakers, and at the 2023 Atp Finals, they will mark yet another historic achievement.
The Atp Finals celebrate tennis, featuring the best players of the past year. Due to the nature of the event, you just won't see many young players at it because, most of the time, it features players that are at their peak, and that most of the time doesn't happen at those young ages.
This year will feature two players who are younger than 21 years old, as both Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune are among the best 8 players in the world. Both deserved to be here.
Let's start with Alcaraz. He's had an amazing year with highlights such as winning Wimbledon but also plenty of 'smaller' events like the Atp Masters 1000.
Rune on the other hand did great as well making his way to a couple of finals. Both also...

Alexander Zverev was never a fan of the current Davis Cup format, but he added some more criticism for good measure.

There are no guarantees when it comes to the Kazakhstani player as his tennis can range from abysmal to spectacular. It was quite spectacular in Halle recently as he ended up with the trophy beating some notable players along the way.
Winning the trophy put him at risk of continuing the notorious Halle curse which sees the non-Federer named champions...

Alex de Minaur booked his second final on grass and he'll try to get it done though it will be very tough against Carlos Alcaraz.
De Minaur put together a very impressive week at the 2023 Cinch Championships that started with him snapping the winning streak of Andy Murray in the first round. Since then he cruised past opponents to book his second Atp-level final on grass in his career hoping to add another trophy.
The opponent will be as tough as it can get with Carlos Alcaraz who produced a sensational effort to halt Korda's run in Queen's . There won't be a shortage of motivation for the Australian as he wasted match points last year against Alcaraz in Barcelona. He's also getting tips from Aussie tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt so he'll certainly be very dangerous.
He's been a huge mentor and my Davis Cup captain, so he's been messaging me this week as well.

We won't see Rafael Nadal on a tennis court until 2024 but there is a very good chance that we will see him at least once more in the future.
The Spaniard injured himself earlier this year at a point where he extended too much trying to get to Mackenzie McDonald's forehand. He finished that match standing but that would be the last we see of him on a tennis court this year. An injury left him unable to recover on time as he tried various things in order to find himself on the court.
As popularly advocated by doctors, surgery is the last resort and Nadal only opted for one after it became apparent that there was no other way. According to reports the surgery proved a success. It was performed in Barcelona by a team of experts who had worked on other players such as Milos Raonic and Lleyton Hewitt in the past.

Here's video of Roger Federer trying to play "speed boat tennis" with Australian tennis pro Lleyton Hewitt. They are not very good at it. The two superstars decided to smack a few balls around in the middle of Sydney Harbour this morning to promote a new tennis format called FAST4 ... which has nothing to do with boats. As for the nautical exhibition, it was pretty cool in theory ... and the guys were able to rally...

It’s that time of year again, Wimbledon has rolled around and has already sprung up a surprise or two on its 1st day. Defending champion Roger Federer, after cruising through to a straight sets victory on centre court yesterday, will be hoping to mount a respectable defense of his title. While Andy Murray, Britain’s great hope, followed Federer’s example with a comfortable straight sets victory over Benjamin Becker.
While the talk of Wimbledon will inevitably fall on the world’s top players, what of the ranked outsiders, those who could easily fall at the 1st hurdle yet could also spring an upset. Everyone loves an underdog and there is no greater stage than Wimbledon for that to hold true. A perfect example is that of Goran Ivanisevic, who back in 2001 and ranked 125 won Wimbledon despite needing a wildcard for to enter. It can happen.

If Novak Djokovic had compiled the draw for this year’s Wimbledon himself, he couldn’t have come up with a kinder one. The three men who could realistically derail the best player on the planet are all in the other half of the draw.
Since Lleyton Hewitt’s win in 2002 Wimbledon has been won seven times by Federer, twice by Nadal and and two years ago by Djokovic himself. No one else has had a look-in. Following his Olympic Gold at Wimbledon, the Us Open triumph last year and his current ranking of number 2 in the world, Andy Murray has a legitimate claim to be considered a contender for the title. But outside these four, forget it. To win a slam you have to beat not just one but at least two of the four big beasts in the tennis jungle over five sets and the fact that del...

Despite its outward civility, Professional Tennis can be a brutal sport for the players, and the sell by date for most is around age 30, give or take a couple of years. So it takes a dedicated athlete to carry on in the face of Father Time, lingering injuries, and young phenoms nipping at your Nike's.
In the past couple of years we've paid tribute to the Atp Top Twenty Players and the Hottest Players Outside The Top 20, and as this year's Australian Open commences, we're going to look at all of the players in the Top 100 who have crossed the "30" milestone mark.
They may be the tennis equivalent of Methuselah, but they can still teach the young guns a thing or two!

This is probably the fluffiest article ever on Mumbrella.
Office dogs.
What, if anything, does having a pooch on the premises add to company culture? Does man’s best friend contribute to the creative process? Or do they, much like procurement types, tend to bark at people and shit on everything?
Like graffiti on office walls, a dog in the agency is one thing I’ve noticed a lot lately on my travels around adland. I wondered if lap dogs in hospital wards help the healing process, what role do they perform in an ad agency?
The first agency I noticed for its canine credentials was Spinach Advertising, an agency in Melbourne, a city where I’ve noticed plenty of dogs in agencies.
I was at Spinach’s office in St Kilda to catch up with their media director Ben Willee. After walking out of the lift, I was met first by a receptionist,...

Bec Hewitt is said to be "struggling" in her marriage to tennis star Lleyton Hewitt. The former Home and Away actress, who has three children Mia, Cruz and Ava with Lleyton, is said to be upset at his potential return to the tennis circuit. A source who identified themselves as a friend of Bec told Woman's Day magazine: "Bec sees it as a real betrayal. She had already started planning their new life back home in Australia when Lleyton decided to delay his retirement once again, this time to chase Olympic gold at the London games in August." She is also alleged to have been "burned" by Lleyton "deliberately" hiding his most recent injury from her, especially as he told his parents Glynn and Cherilyn about (more)...

Bec and Lleyton Hewitt are believed to be moving back to their native Australia. The former Home and Away actress, who has children Mia, Cruz and Ava with tennis champion Lleyton, is reportedly very happy that they will be near their families after seven years following her husband around the world and spending most of their time in the Bahamas. A close friend of Bec told Woman's Day magazine: "Bec won't miss the five-star life one bit. Any time she's in exclusive boutiques in London or Paris, she's just keeping someone else company or killing time. Her tastes are fairly simple. She's always emphatic about not needing or wanting any more jewellery. She's happy with who and where she is in life." The source claimed that the star was unhappy in the couple's expensive mansion in the Bahamas, saying: "She has always wanted (more)...

The Herald Sun quotes Lleyton as saying: "My beautiful wife, she's been fantastic. Obviously this year has been a real battle for us, or me physically, and she's always been there to support me. "The biggest positive is I've been able to be home and clean nappies and do all those things a bit more. But you've been my rock the whole time, sweetie, so thank you very much." The eleven month long men’s tennis calender draws to a close this week at the Barclay’s World Tour Finals in London. The Atp season truly is a marathon and as in any distance race, a handful of the fittest have surged ahead of the pack and race each other to the finish line. Each of the race’s four leading men – Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Roger Federer – enter the elite eight-man round robin tournament with various question marks over, so it truly is any man’s race. Let’s evaluate each contender’s chances of taking home the season-ending championships.
The marathon’s front-runner Novak Djokovic comes into London more than a little exhausted. Djokovic played a nearly unblemished three quarters of the season, taking home the Australian Open, Wimbledon and Us Open trophies, compiling a 6-0 record against Nadal and thereby dethroning the Spaniard as the World No.

The Australian tennis star, who is married to former Home and Away actress Bec, left his sister Jaslyn feeling "alone" and "frustrated" at her recent wedding to Logie-nominated writer and comedian Rob Shehadie after saying that he was unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict. On the eve of the Australian Open, Roger Federer had his eye on more than a trophy – because three days prior, the earthquake in Haiti stuck and killed at last 200,000 people. So what’s a champ to do except hold a charity tennis match to aid relief efforts
Federer initiated and organized a mixed-doubles fundraiser that raised more than $600,000 and featured some of tennis’ top stars, wearing microphones on court and providing comedic commentary as they played.
On the court were, among others, Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Kim Clijsters and Lleyton Hewitt.

Courted. Lleyton Hewitt's wife Bec Cartwright vs. Andy Roddick's wife Brooklyn Decker. With Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt slugging it out on Wimbledon's court number one today, the question isn't which sportsman is going to win, but rather which tennis player's significant other has been getting more camera time during the tournament. It seems like NBC Sports is cutting to one of the hot blondes after every point their husbands play. The women are, after all, good accessories. Hewitt's multitalented wife, the Australian Bec Cartwright, is an actress (she starred on the Aussie soap opera Home and Away from 1998 to 2005), singer (she released a successful pop album in 2004), reality-tv star (in 2004, she won the Down Under's version of Dancing with the Stars), and author (she has written for Women's Day). Meanwhile, Roddick's wife, the American Brooklyn Decker, is a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model; in fact, Roddick and Decker...
