This month, Helen Woodward Animal Center will once again unite with animal welfare proponents and organizations worldwide for the 5th Annual Remember Me Thursday.
Honored on the fourth Thursday of September, the campaign asks pet lovers and animal rescue groups to create an unstoppable, integrated voice advocating for homeless pets to live in forever homes, not die waiting for them. Grassroots candle-lighting ceremonies and a global avalanche of social media buzz will shine a light on the millions of animals still awaiting adoption and encourage communities to opt to adopt and reduce the millions of homeless pets euthanized each year. As in previous years, some very big names are stepping forward to lend their support to the cause, including Tony and Emmy Award-winning actress, Kristin Chenoweth, who has been named the 2017 Official Spokesperson for the campaign. Helen Woodward Animal Center encourages the world to join with these philanthropic celebrities and...

Chicago – Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, who just won the Mlb Players Association’s Player of the Year Award, was named the new cover athlete for “Major League Baseball 2K12” this morning. The game is scheduled for release on March 9, 2012.
The decision to pick Verlander as the cover athlete came after a year where the pitcher went 24-5 as a starter and helped take the Tigers to the American League Championship Series, where they fell to the Texas Rangers. Verlander also pitched his second no-hitter in the 2011 season, becoming the thirteenth pitcher to pitch multiple no hitters in his career, and the first since Mark Buehrle did it with the Chicago White Sox.
“It’s a dream come true to be on the cover of Major League Baseball 2K12,” Verlander said. “I’ve worked closely with 2K Sports on the Mlb 2K series since 2007, and I couldn’t be more...

When Babe Ruth became the first player to hit 500 homeruns at Cleveland’s League Park 80 years ago, it was just another day at the office for the oft-smashing Bambino. But for baseball-crazy America, it was ballpark magic. Eight decades later, baseball isn’t doing quite as well. Audiences have declined this season, and while economic woes are partially to blame, there’s also a lack of compelling stories this season; no Barry Bonds controversy, no risen-from-the-ashes Devil Rays, no slugger seeking admittance to the 500 club. But going into the stretch, the tide is turning; division races are white hot in both the Nl Central and the Al West, and Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle scored a congratulatory phone call from First Fan Barack Obama after pitching a perfect game a few weeks back. If that’s not a ringing fan endorsement, we don’t know what is.

Thank you to Mark Buehrle. Thank you to DeWayne Wise. Thank you to the Chicago White Sox for rescuing all of us from the oozing swamp that dominates sports media coverage during the late summer. The months of July and August mark the season of scandal. It's the time when websites, sports radio stations, and certain ubiquitous 24 hour sports networks strain to fill 1,440 minutes a day by endlessly excavating stories that make a viewer wish for a scalding hot shower and a Brillo pad. The games themselves become little more than background noise. The last month says it all: this is the season when the serious (the murder of Steve McNair), the silly (did Lebron smoke weed in high school?) and the insufferable (is Brett Favre coming back? Do I have to care?) dominate beyond all proportion to their...

CAA has signed top baseball agent Casey Close, whose client roster includes New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter. Close, who has been an agent for more than 14 years, has negotiated major baseball deals like Jeter's 10-year contract with the Yankees in 2001 and represented six first-round draft picks last year. Close, who will be based in CAA's New York office, comes from IMG, where he had headed the baseball division since 1992. Following Close are such major-league players on his client list as Derrek Lee, Richie Sexson, Ben Sheets, Mark Buehrle, Eric Milton and Kenny Lofton. The announcement comes a week after leading pro football agents Tom Condon and Ken Kremer also left IMG to join CAA (HR 4/6).
