British distributor Vertigo Releasing has acquired David Bowie origin film “Stardust,” starring Johnny Flynn, who recently won the best actor award at London’s Raindance Film Festival for his performance as Bowie.
Vertigo will release the film before the end of the year, on the back of the U.S. release by IFC Films on Nov. 25. Ed Caffrey, head of acquisitions and business development at Vertigo, lauded the “compelling performance from the very talented Johnny Flynn.”
As well as the strength of Flynn’s performance, the distributor will build on Bowie’s enduring popularity in the U.K., and positive local reviews, such as a four-star write-up in The Times newspaper, which called “Stardust” “a remarkably confident, smart and resilient film with the sense of soul that its fascinating subject deserves.”

Salon Pictures has unveiled a first look image of Johnny Flynn as David Bowie in its upcoming feature “Stardust.”
Rising star Flynn, who recently starred in Michael Pearce’s BAFTA-winning debut feature “Beast” and co-starred in the ITV and Amazon Studio’s adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s “Vanity Fair,” stars as the music icon as he embarks on his first road trip to America in 1971 and creates his, now legendary, Ziggy Stardust persona. Jena Malone co-stars as Bowie’s wife Angie alongside Marc Maron as publicist Rob Oberman.
The project has been described as a “origins story” and “moment in time film” rather than a biopic by its producers, who likened it to British features “Control” and “Nowhere Boy,” about Joy Division and John Lennon, respectively. As such it is not reliant on using Bowie’s music but will instead use period music songs that the musician covered, not his original tracks.

Stardust, a film that will depict David Bowie’s 1971 first American visit, sets actor/singer Johnny Flynn to play the legend.
The life of the late rock legend, David Bowie, is to become the dramatic centerpiece of a biopic titled Stardust. Tackling the task of portraying Bowie is Johnny Flynn, a musician who’s already banked quite the resume as an actor.
Stardust will chronicle a critical waypoint in the career of Bowie (born David Robert Jones), set in 1971 during the then-24-year-old's first trip to America. After Bowie made evolutionary leaps from early-1960s teen idol to "Space Oddity" in 1969 to Dylan-esque/Britpop hybrid on album Hunky Dory and a dark transition on The Man Who Sold the World, his first stateside sojourn yielded inspiration for his next creative step. There, he conceived the plan to parlay his onstage androgyny into the persona that we know as Ziggy Stardust,...

With strained family relations and increasing health issues, Freddie finally tells all and revisits his old haunts in an attempt to understand what pushed him towards a life of crime. From his impoverished childhood, to traumatic memories of the Blitz and WWII, Freddie is a fascinating character study. Good Deed announced the deal Monday at the Cannes Film Festival.
Written and directed by Ryan, the film follows Christine Meeusen, a corporate exec-turned-cannabis-farmer who found her calling in medicinal marijuana. Meeusen, betrayed by a bigamist husband after 17 years, fled penniless with her three young children and discovered the lucrative business of cannabis farming. While adopting the persona of a nun called Sister Kate, she created Sisters of the Valley, a group of nuns who are not affiliated with any traditional religious order, to organize a California business that makes and sells medicinal cannabis products.
Breaking Habits screened its first look trailer during the Efm in Berlin in February and screened privately for buyers at Cannes Film Market with the Sisters of the Valley in attendance.

The scope of this slice of wartime history is so small, it’s almost the movie equivalent of a one-man show. There are perhaps only a dozen speaking roles. Brian Cox is impressive as The Man Who Saved England in its Darkest Hour, but the drama reduces both the man and the historical crisis to trivial status, as little more than a personal emotional crisis: “Winston, the Haunted Imperialist.”

Production on documentary gets underway in Europe. Embankment strikes territory deals.
Bleecker Street has acquired North American rights to McQueen, the documentary about the late British enfant terrible of the fashion world, Alexander McQueen.
Embankment has licensed a slew of international rights to Ian Bonhote’s film that is now shooting in London and Paris.
Deals have closed in the UK (Lionsgate UK), Germany (ProKino), Australia (Madman), Scandinavia (Non-Stop), Benelux (Paradiso), Switzerland (Ascot Elite), and Japan (Kino).
Peter Ettedgui wrote McQueen, which the producers said will use recreated scenes, interviews and archive footage to celebrate the designer’s life and work.
McQueen dazzled the world of haute couture for years. He was head designer at Givenchy, sold a controlling interest in his own company to Gucci Group, and famously designed stage clothes for David Bowie and Bjork, among others. He committed suicide in 2010 at the age of 40.
