‘Awards Chatter’ Live Pod: Jason Segel on ‘Shrinking,’ the “Existential Crisis” From Which It Came and His Odds-Defying Career
Image
Jason Segel, the guest on the latest episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast — which was recorded in front of an audience at the inaugural Napa Valley StreamFest, where he was celebrated with the fest’s TV Performance of the Year Award — is only 45, but he has already been a major figure in the American comedy scene for a quarter-century.

Segel made his name on the short-lived but seminal TV series Freaks and Geeks (1999); in hit films like Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008), I Love You, Man (2009) and The Muppets (2011); and over the course of nine seasons on the popular hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother, spanning 2005 through 2014. But a little over a decade ago, in the midst of what he now describes as an “existential crisis,” he rebooted his career.

A different side of Segel first began to emerge in the 2011 dark dramedy Jeff, Who Lives at Home,...

Will Beall is writing the script. Plot details are being kept under wraps.

Doug Liman previously directed “Road House,” a new spin on the classic Patrick Swayze film, from a script by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry.

Guy Ritchie Reunites With Jake Gyllenhaal to Direct Sequel to Last Year's Reboot of 36-Year-Old Classic
Image
Road House was a massive success on Prime Video when it was released in 2024. After breaking several records on the platform, Amazon MGM Studios officially granted a sequel.

After several disagreements between director Doug Liman and Amazon MGM Studios over the film's release, the sequel will change directors. Jake Gyllenhaal is officially set to return as ex-UFC fighter Elwood Dalton in the sequel, and he will reunite with a former director: Guy Ritchie. After several rumors, Variety officially confirmed Guy Ritchie will direct the sequel to 2024's Road House.

Road House is a remake of the 1989 classic of the same name starring Patrick Swayze. Although the movie received mixed reviews from the critics and the audience, it ended up being a major success, and Amazon hurried to greenlight a sequel. The first entry has 60% from the critics, just barely holding on to a "fresh" badge, and 52% from the audience on the Popcornmeter.

‘Shrinking’ star Ted McGinley has been ‘brought to tears’ by the response to his performance: ‘It’s been an amazing journey’
Image
Ted McGinley has been a television star for decades, dating back to his debut performance on Happy Days and series regular work in '80s stalwarts like The Love Boat, Dynasty, and Married… With Children. However, for years, McGinley was dogged by an unfounded reputation as a show killer, to the extent that McGinley has said in past interviews that his moniker as the “patron saint of jumping the shark” cost him acting jobs.

So, McGinley is understandably emotional about the universal acclaim he’s received for his performance on the Apple TV+ comedy series Shrinking.

“I’m telling you, I’ve been brought to tears,” McGinley tells Gold Derby. “I’m so used to being the worst, or being told that I’m such a bad guy to add to a show. This has been an amazing journey and experience, and I honestly feel blessed. I’m working in scenes with Harrison Ford.

5 Characters from Shrinking That Deserve More Screen Time in Season 3
Image
Apple TV+’s Shrinking, in the course of its two seasons, has left the audience charmed by its unique blend of laughter, grief, and authenticity through the medium of unconventional therapy. Co-created by Bill Lawrence, Jason Segel, and Brett Goldstein, the series has received genuine praise and appreciation for the work of its stellar ensemble cast, honest storytelling, and the way it deals with sensitive topics of mental health.

Major characters like Jimmy Laird (Jason Segel), Doctor Paul Rhodes (Harrison Ford), and Gaby(Jessica Williams) have been pivotal to the story, quickly becoming viewer favorites. However, there are several supporting characters in the show who have played a great role in taking the story forward and still haven’t gotten justified screen time. As the show moves into a much-anticipated season 3, we wish that these 5 characters could step out from the sidelines and into the spotlight, adding layers of complexity...

‘Shrinking’ Is a Great Show but It Battles a Very Realistic Issue at Its Core
Image
Shrinking, co-created by Brett Goldstein, Bill Lawrence, and Jason Segel, has captured the hearts of the audience in its two seasons. The story revolves around the therapist Jimmy Laird, played by Jason Segel. The series offers a refreshing take on how the complexities of mental health issues can affect day-to-day life.

Though the show has been received well and audience has loved how it deals with various situations but there may also be a flipside to it. The show has faced criticism for the portrayal of a few therapy practices highlighting the ethical boundaries that need to be adhered to in mental healthcare.

Shrinking seems to compromise reality to show a dramatic representation of therapy

The narrative Shrinking weaves is around a therapist, who is grieving, and adapts different unconventional methods to feel better. These include forming deep personal relationships with clients and even offering advice that seems to exceed professional boundaries.

Linda Lavin would be the 12th actress to receive a posthumous Emmy nomination
Image
Gone, but not forgotten.

Linda Lavin died Dec. 29, 2024, due to complications from lung cancer. At the time of her death, the beloved 87-year-old actress had filmed seven of 10 episodes of Mid-Century Modern, Hulu's new comedy starring Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer, and Nathan Lee Graham as gay best friends who decide to live together in Palm Springs.

Lavin's role of Sybil Schneiderman, the mother of Bunny (Lane), has been receiving Emmy buzz following the sitcom's premiere on March 28. She currently ranks among the top 10 for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, according to the Gold Derby odds. To date, only 11 actresses have received posthumous Emmy nominations, so Lavin would be in rare company, indeed.

Here's a clip of one of Lavin's final scenes from Mid-Century Modern. Sybil's spicy side is in full display as she yells at a stranger on the phone who's trying to con her, with Lavin delivering perfect comedic timing.

Early Emmy odds in 16 categories: ‘Hacks,’ ‘Severance,’ ‘The Penguin’ out front
Image
The 2025 Emmy nominations won't be announced until July 15, but Gold Derby already has a head start on handicapping the races.

First things first, we are predicting last year's Best Comedy Series champion, Hacks, to win again for its upcoming season, which premieres April 10 on Max. After all, the Emmys love repeats. The Season 4 plot follows legendary stand-up comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) as she gears up for her nightly talk show with the help of her on-again/off-again comedy writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). Both Smart and Einbinder are also leading their respective Emmy contests for Best Comedy Actress and Best Comedy Supporting Actress.

Severance is back for Season 2 after a three-year delay, and it's expected to receive a goat-load of Emmy love. Adam Scott, Britt Lower, John Turturro, and Zach Cherry play office workers at the sinister Lumon Industries, who all agree to separate their workplace memories from their external memories.

“Do you want me to pull my pants down..”: Shrinking Creators Were Too Scared to Give Harrison Ford His Unhinged Dialogue Early On
Image
Well, sometimes, you’ve got to color outside the lines to paint a masterpiece!

When you think of legends, you often imagine them as untouchable figures, perched on thrones, basking in the adoration of the masses. But then, you see Harrison Ford step into a comedy-drama like Shrinking, and suddenly, he feels less like an icon and more like a neighbor you’ve known forever—just with a little more swagger and a few more action-packed tales to share. There’s an unexpected warmth and humanity that makes him feel so much more real.

Harrison Ford in Shrinking / Credits: Apple TV+

It’s not just Ford’s charm that’s drawing us in, but the boldness of a show that refuses to stick to the tried-and-true. In fact, the very creators of Shrinking were a bit terrified at first to push Ford into the wackier side of his character. Why?...

Extremely early Emmy odds: ‘Hacks,’ ‘The Bear’ expected to dominate comedy acting races (again)
Image
If you're looking for a major shakeup at the 2025 Emmys, don't hold your breath for the comedy acting races to make waves. For the second year in a row, Hacks and The Bear are predicted to extend their streak of domination — led by Jean Smart and Jeremy Allen White, who are both undefeated for playing Deborah Vance and Carmen Berzatto, respectively.

The last time one of those two names wasn't called on Emmy night was in 2023, when Abbott Elementary's Quinta Brunson took home Best Comedy Actress during an off-season for Hacks. Last year, The Bear clawed its way to three of the four main acting prizes and swept both guest star categories (Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis). Smart handed the FX series its only acting loss, snagging her third Emmy for Hacks over The Bear's Ayo Edebiri. Can anyone pull off an upset this year? Here's the state...

“You want Jimmy to get to the point where he would leave it all behind for Alice, including his therapy practice and all that,” Segel told The Hollywood Reporter when season two concluded. “I think that’s what makes it the primary relationship.

Why Harrison Ford is poised to get his first Emmy nomination for ‘Shrinking’
Image
When the Apple TV+ comedy series Shrinking premiered in January 2023, Harrison Ford seemed like a safe bet for his first nomination at the Emmys. After all, he's one of the biggest movie stars in the world making a rare foray into series television. He ranked fifth in Gold Derby's odds for Best Comedy Supporting Actor going into nominations morning, but was unexpectedly snubbed. Shrinking only managed nominations for lead actor Jason Segel and supporting actress Jessica Williams. The show returned for its second season last October, and it looks like things will be different, not just for Ford but for the show as a whole.

Harrison Ford Will Not Present At The Oscars Following Shingles Diagnosis
Image
Harrison Ford has dropped out of his presenting role at the Oscars — to be held tomorrow in Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre — following a diagnosis of shingles, his representatives have confirmed to outlets.

The Shrinking star stepped out last weekend at the SAG Awards, where he was part of a lighthearted viral moment with fellow co-star Jessica Williams, whose “I Am An Actor” introduction speech he inadvertently interrupted by trying to sneak some food in the background of the shot.

According to reports, the veteran actor was diagnosed with the illness yesterday, leading him to nix the appearance as of this morning. Shingles, caused by the same virus as chickenpox known as varicella-zoster virus, is an infection that leads to a painful rash. Per the Mayo Clinic, shingles is not life-threatening and is a reactivation of chickenpox, given that the virus stays in the body for the rest of one’s life.

And yes, our tongues are wagging, just like Pilaf's, at the thought of this whole glorious circus finally coming to an end.

Best Host: Nikki Glaser

After two Golden Globe host misfires in a row, Nikki Glaser had her work cut out for her as ringleader of the 2025 kudos. But with her pop culture savviness ("Welcome to ... Ozempic’s biggest night") and her laugh-out-loud roasts, the stand-up comedian quickly endeared herself to viewers. Demi Moore's Horror Film 'Corporate Animals' is Now Available on Shudder
Image
Demi Moore has been making a comeback of the ages, with her performance in the body horror hit, The Substance, earning her multiple awards, including a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actress. But The Substance isn't the only recent body horror film she has starred in. In 2019, she appeared in another thriller, Corporate Animals, and it's currently available on horror streamer, Shudder.

The movie follows an abusive, egomaniac CEO named Lucy (Moore) as she leads employees from her company, Incredible Edibles, on a team-building exercise to try and save the business. The co-workers go spelunking in New Mexico, with Lucy deciding they need to on a much more advanced route, against the better judgment of the guide, Brandon (Ed Helms). What follows is a bizarre attempt at lampooning corporate culture that descends into cannibalism and chaos, plus an utterly bizarre dream sequence with Helms and co-star...

Harrison Ford Scolded for Snacking During Co-Star’s SAG Awards Speech!
Image
Jessica Williams had a hilarious moment with her Shrinking co-star Harrison Ford at the 2025 SAG Awards when he unintentionally stole the spotlight during her speech.

The event, hosted by Kristen Bell and streamed live on Netflix, kicked off with its traditional “I Am an Actor” introduction, where stars share stories about their journeys in Hollywood. Williams started her speech by saying, “Los Angeles is known as the city of dreams, and sure enough, all my dreams have come true here.”

However, just as she continued, Ford was caught on camera casually eating a chip. Realizing he was being filmed, he awkwardly tried to hide it, causing the audience to burst into laughter.

Seeing the moment unfold, Williams turned to Ford and jokingly shouted, “I told him to turn away! Don’t look!” before finishing her speech. She wrapped up with, “But more than just a dream factory, this city has always been my home.

SAG Awards 2025 Snubs and Surprises: Timothée Chalamet Triumphs, ‘The Bear’ Flops and ‘Only Murders’ Shocks
Image
The 2025 SAG Awards were brisk and joyous, honoring the award season’s hottest performances one week before the Oscars. But the night was also a tribute to everything from actors’ less-than-glam early roles to the rite of passage that is a guest spot on one of the many “Law & Order” series. While much of the evening went according to plan — at least according to the pundits — there were some snubs and surprises that kept things interesting.

Surprise: Timothée Chalamet nabs competitive best male actor in a leading role statue

The Actor seemed like Adrien Brody’s to lose, given that his demanding role in “The Brutalist” won him the BAFTA and the Golden Globe. But Chalamet’s dynamic performance, masterful press cycle and transperency into his process has earned him plenty of praise.

Timothée Chalamet Lays His Cards On The Table Following ‘A Complete Unknown’ SAG Award Win: “I Want To Be One Of The Greats”
Image
Timothée Chalamet has talked in the recent past about the humiliation of preparing awards show speeches, only to have to rip up one after another. But tonight, he walked away with a trophy, taking Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his turn as Bob Dylan in Searchlight’s A Complete Unknown.

“Thank you. I was not expecting this at all, truly,” Chalamet said in his speech. “I’ll start by thanking my mother, who I’m here with tonight. She’s been working at Actors’ Equity for 40 years.”

Chalamet went on to acknowledge that “the classiest thing would be to downplay the effort that went into this role and how much this means to me.” Still, he said, “the truth is, this was five and a half years of my life. I poured everything I had into portraying this incomparable artist, Mr. Bob Dylan, a true American hero,...

Jessica Williams Playfully Calls Out ‘Shrinking’ Co-Star Harrison Ford During SAG Award “I Am An Actor” Introductions
Image
Jessica Williams and Harrison Ford often share the screen in Apple TV+’s mental health dramedy Shrinking, but during the SAG Awards opening “I am an actor” segment, she would have preferred to take up the spotlight on her own.

As the Booksmart actress began her contribution to the heartfelt introduction, which involved performers like Jodie Foster and Mikey Madison, she found herself a wee bit side-tracked. “Los Angeles is often known as the city of dreams. And sure enough all my dreams have come true here. From my dream of preparing…” she began, before noticing Ford trying to sneak a piece of food behind her in the camera view.

By the time Ford understood what was happening and attempted to stop eating, Williams had already gotten distracted, breaking into laughter and playfully shouting, “I told him to turn away!” She burst into further fits of giggles as Ford attempted to hide behind her completely,...

Kristen Bell Performs & Shouts Out First Responders During SAG Awards Monologue: “There Is No Way To Properly Express Our Gratitude”
Image
As the returning host of Sunday night’s SAG Awards on Netflix, Kristen Bell certainly knows her audience. “Everyone started out as a kid in somewhere Earth, going to bed and waking up every morning thinking, ‘It’s going to be me,’” says Bell. “So yes, Justin Timberlake owes us all a piece of that song.”

It wasn’t Bell speaking when the program began however, as the show opened with a pre-recorded Hacks sketch of Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) reading her monologue to her pitch team, before her agent Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) comes and lets her know she isn’t actually going to host. The skit ends as Deborah receives the serum from The Substance, which came just in time for her hosting gig.
