The days when every independent filmmaker worshipped at the altar of Quentin Tarantino are, for the most part, behind us. It’s been long enough that a good old-fashioned ’90s-style ultraviolent crime thriller now seems like a nostalgia trip, orgies of violence and long pans around a dinner table and all. That’s certainly the case for Chicago-born filmmaker Gary Michael Schultz’s sophomore feature, Vincent N Roxxy, which suffers from many of the same shortcomings that plagued tough-talking Tarantino homages in the late ’90s but distinguishes itself with a satisfying climax.
Promotional materials for the film make it sound like a Natural Born Killers-style “criminal lovers on the run” road-trip movie, but most of it actually takes place in the small town where Vincent (Emile Hirsch) grew up. (The film was shot in Louisiana, but the setting is clearly meant to evoke run-down burgs in the rural Midwest...

"I always felt trapped in this town..." Vertical Entertainment has debuted the trailer for an indie crime thriller romance titled Vincent N Roxxy, telling the love story between two lost souls. Zoe Kravitz stars as Roxxy, an "inner city girl in trouble", who's attacked on the street in broad daylight. Emile Hirsch plays Vincent, who tries to save her, but ends up falling in love with her and the two go on the run from their pasts and the dangerous people after them. The cast includes Zoey Deutch, Emory Cohen, Scott Mescudi, Beau Knapp, and Jason Mitchell. While this obviously seems like an updated, modern version of Bonnie and Clyde, or even Sid and Nancy, they're trying to make it unique with developed characters. This doesn't look that good, and I prefer American Honey anyway, but this might be worth checking out. Watch below. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for...

Anton Yelchin’s tragic death Sunday came just three weeks before the 27-year-old actor was set to start shooting his directorial debut, “Travis,” which he also wrote.
The crime thriller was scheduled to start production on July 11 in what Yelchin called “the lonely landscape of the San Fernando Valley,” said his friend and collaborator Keith Kjarval, a producer on the movie. Callum Turner was set to play the title character alongside co-stars Alia Shawkat and Milla Jovovich. The film centered on an actor and amateur photographer who witnesses the murder of a young woman after following her back to her apartment.

Emile Hirsch and Zoë Kravitz’s talents are wasted in an inane love story that only springs to life during its bloody final reel
For a film called Vincent-n-Roxxy, Gary Michael Schultz’s two-hander seems oddly uninterested in the love story at its core.
After an energetic opening sequence that sees the titular twosome, played by Emile Hirsch and Zoë Kravitz, meet under the most chaotic of circumstances, the pair drift for much of the rest of the film until Schultz attempts to liven matters with an extended bout of extreme violence. It’s only then that Vincent-n-Roxxy springs to visceral life. Pity that the bloody finale only makes up for the last third of what’s otherwise pretty dreary.

Littered with an international cast comprised of Theo James, Stephanie Sigman, Alexander Skarsgård, Michael Peña, Tessa Thompson and Caleb Landry Jones, while John Michael McDonagh doesn’t make it three for three with the notably absent Brendan Gleeson, this might count as his third trip to Park City. The festival has been a good luck charm for this filmmaker of Irish decent as both his debut, and sophomore films have played passionately well with critics and auds alike. With rich moral complex and comedic contributions in Irish cinema (2011’s The Guard and 2014’s Calvary), the English-born filmmaker changed sceneries, bringing this crime comedy across the pond for a shoot Stateside. War On Everyone shot in Albuquerque, New Mexico this past April.

Half a dozen shorts, one unheard of horror feature film offering (2013’s Devil In My Ride) and several indie producing creds most recently William H. Four features under his belt (2004’s Malachance, 2006’s Drama/Mex, 2008’s I’m Gonna Explode and 2011’s Miss Bala) and Gerardo Naranjo‘s only history with the Sundance film festival is as a jury member. That might change come next January. One that I consider the odd man out among filmmakers from the Mexican film renaissance that commenced back with Iñárritu’s Amores Perros, from lovers on the run, beauty queens on the move and young adults hitting the road, there is a lot of chaotic displacement in his films. Since his sophomore feature, his films are high value festival items and since this is a U.S. shot project, Viena and the Fantomes could very much land a coveted Premieres category showing to make bidders. Naranjo’s Un Certain Regard section selected thriller Miss Bala seriously made the rounds, so this eighties punk era set film has a certain...

If The Battery approached the zombie movie with a very low budget but lots of fun and ingenuity, Devil in My Ride tries to do the same with the exorcism film. Gary Michael Schultz's first feature-length effort centers on more than two male characters, but it ends being mostly a buddy movie in which the two protagonists are on a road trip to Las Vegas. A mixtures of genres is certainly what Devil in My Ride offers. The movie kicks off with the presentation of Travis (Frank Zieger), an irreverent and carefree kind of character. Inside his beloved truck, the "Black Mama", Travis is having fun with some lady when he recalls a very important event he must attend: the wedding of his sister Doreen...

I love that headline and it's about bloody time we brought a turtle into the post apocalyptic canon. Ok well technically we don't know if it's Pa, but we can hope. From director Gary Michael Schultz comes a short film called Who is Jude? based on a short story by Luis Alberto Perez. Love the Portishead in the teaser!
Jude, a lonely anti-social tech geek, and his only friend, his pet turtle Bronson, are faced with a catastrophic situation beyond the walls of their tiny garden apartment. With no electricity and no form of communication to the outside world, Jude is warned about a possible terrorist-attack taking place outside his home by the woman that lives above him, Iris with whom he is infatuated. Are these occurrences the plot of some sick joke? Or is Jude's world really coming to an end?
