Thanks to a new covers compilation from the DC label For Love of Records, The Dismemberment Plan have shared their first new recording in over a decade: a cover of Circus Lupus’ 1992 song, “Unrequited.”
Matching the arrangement of the original recording, The Dismemberment Plan’s take on “Unrequited” has the advantage of modern mixing on its side, and hits with a harder oomph on the low-end. On the choruses, the driving crash cymbal and arpeggiated bassline lift the energy, while the guitar solo leading into the outro conveys the raw, beefy power of the track, overall aptly honoring Circus Lupus’ original.
As the band explained on Instagram, the cover was recorded in August 2023 in Richmond, Virginia. Its arrival marks the first time they have played together in nine years. Listen to it below.

Speedy Ortiz have unveiled “Ghostwriter,” another look at their upcoming album Rabbit Rabbit. Listen to the single below.
As a nu-metal homage, “Ghostwriter” finds Sadie Dupuis seething with rage — a reasonable reaction to this summer’s boiling heat, and what that means for the future ahead. Rather than breaking stuff, however, the bandleader tries to find a more productive release.
“While ‘Ghostwriter’ ruminates on the horrible realities that stoke my anger — in this song’s case, the death of our climate and the criminalization of environmental protesters — it’s also about trying to live with less rage in the day-to-day,” Dupuis explained in a statement. “And not always succeeding, but not getting mad about that, either. And sometimes directing that angry adrenaline toward positive actions.”
Dupuis continued, “My bandmates picked ‘Ghostwriter’ as a single, perhaps because it subtly nods to our unabashed love of nu-metal. It was really fun to...

My husband and I have gone a lot of drives since moving to New Jersey last year — to small seaside towns, to rolling farmlands, through the notorious Meadowlands and their belching sulfuric funk. Those drives have taken on new significance as more and more New Jersey citizens don masks to go shopping, and as everyone faces the hard truths of the Covid-19 era.
Through the windshield of our little red hatchback is the only way we can see the world these days. And, more often than not, these drives, even the short ones,...

A tribute album to Adam Schlesinger being released today on Bandcamp includes cover songs by two actors who collaborated with the late songwriter on projects, Rachel Bloom and Sarah Silverman, as well as contemporaries of Schlesinger’s from the rock world like Kay Hanley, Nada Surf and Tanya Donnelly.
“Saving for a Custom Van,” which takes its name from the title track of the essential Fountains of Wayne album “Utopia Parkway,” is a 31-track collection that covers the breadth of Schlesinger’s performing and songwriting career. Besides familiar FoW songs from the late ’90s and 2000s, the collection also includes songs from his six-season run as the core house writer for TV’s “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” the films “Music and Lyrics” and “That Thing You Do!,” and Schlesinger’s other long-standing band, Ivy. Even two of the songs he wrote for “Josie and the Pussycats” figure into the expansive track list.

The Irish have put up with a lot of bullshit over the years. There’s England. The Troubles. The kittening of the Celtic Tiger. Enya. It’s not been an easy history. And black people, those living in mostly white countries anyway, they’ve put up with a whole bunch of bullshit, too. So if we pretend there’s an iota of depressing truth being bandied about when, in Roddy Doyle’s novel The Commitments, the irrepressible yet wee bit naïve protagonist Jimmy says that the Irish are the blacks of Europe,...

For six years now, Cartoon Network’s “Steven Universe” has been pumping out story after graceful story about the power of love, friendship, cooperation, self-acceptance and trust. Creator Rebecca Sugar, who previously worked on the network’s equally surreal “Adventure Time,” has created and honed an animated galaxy unlike any other, overflowing with distinct characters and complex mythology that sets it apart. So while the show might have started as the simple adventures of a boy and his alien guardians (aka “The Crystal Gems”) navigating what it means to live on Earth, “Steven Universe” has since served up some of TV’s most thoughtful meditations on what it means to be a good and compassionate person — or alien, or half-human/half-alien, or whatever it is that makes your individual atoms so special.

For good or ill, Aimee Mann has earned a stellar reputation as a purveyor of introspective, softly-strummed acoustic ballads that will make you reflect and possibly weep. That her two most recent albums—2012’s deliciously electro-poppy Charmer, and her seriously rocked-up 2014 partnership with Ted Leo for The Both—stray far from this territory apparently matters little. Her role as the tortured troubadour largely originated with her Academy Award-nominated work on the soundtrack to Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1999 film Magnolia (hear the gorgeous “Save Me“),if not the pair of engaging, critically acclaimed solo albums that proceeded it. 1993’s Whatever and...

Saturday night was a perfect summer evening for free Americana music at Lincoln's Center Damrosch Park as part of the Annual Roots of American Music, Americanafest NYC. The evening featured two of the genres rising stars. The headliners played two sets with the first half of the set featuring mostly original tunes by former Nickel Creek members Sean and Sara Watkin's new band The Watkins Family Hour. They and their extraordinary band entertained a robust crowd of New Yorkers and tourists alike. One of my favorite songs of the evening was their beatiful take on the Grateful Dead's "Brokedown Palace." And co-vocalist Fionna Apple's original song "A Mistake" was quite moving. Yes, she's one of the members of this band.

Even the biggest pop stars of the 1980s can agree: Karaoke bars are great. I had this idea to have an artist invite a bunch of her friends into a private karaoke room and perform one of her own songs, to see what it would sound and feel like to perform it with a weird Midi track and botched lyrics. I can't think of a song I've heard performed at karaoke more than "Eternal Flame" by the Bangles, so I asked the Bangles' own Susanna Hoffs (whom I met on the video I directed for Aimee Mann and Ted Leo's band the Both) to give it a try. She was game, delivering an incredible performance of the song, answering a bunch of karaoke-related questions I asked her, and totally nailing the high note at the end!(Fun/evil fact: There were members of the metal band Deafheaven and ghoul...

You truly haven’t heard the theme from M*A*S*H until you’ve heard it harmonized by Ted Leo and Aimee Mann. In addition to being rock stars in their own right, Leo and Mann have recently formed a dynamic duo called the Both, and when we found out they were willing to do an exclusive live session for us, we gave them an odd challenge: create a medley of great TV theme songs. Melodic wizards that they are, they accepted and succeeded beyond our wildest dreams. Their medley included everything from standards (such as the opening from Cheers) to recent gems (e.g. Regina Spektor's “You’ve Got Time,” from Orange Is the New Black), and a few lost classics (anyone remember Gimme a Break?). Check out this performance they did for us at Joe’s Pub and revel in their warming glow. But wait! There's more!

Aimee Mann, the Oscar-nominated songstress of "Save Me" from the "Magnolia" soundtrack, brings a specific and cutting humor to everything she does. She's both sarcastic and damning, deadpan and sensitive. And her videos -- which have featured the likes of Jon Hamm, Laura Linney, Morgan Murphy, and now her newest duet partner Ted Leo -- are hilarious in their droll weirdness. It's a wacky but understated humor comparable to the IFC series "Portlandia," which actually once featured Mann in a hysterical cameo role. The 'Til Tuesday vet has always been a fan of comedians; she's had acts like Patton Oswalt and Paul F. Tompkins join her in concert, and she often features funny folks in her music videos. In "Aimee Mann's Christmas Carol," she ran into John Krasinski, Michael Cera, and John C. Reilly. Mann's newest video "Milwaukee," the first single off the new album she and Ted Leo...

What is a gig poster? It’s an advertisement for a gig. After the show, you have this poster as a memory of the show, the band, and a historical artifact. You’ve probably seen posters in a Hard Rock Café or similarly themed restaurant for Stones or Hendrix gigs. Those are usually pretty functional, but in the early 1990’s a group of awkward rock nerds used their artistic proclivities to make a different kind of gig poster. Using screen printing, they could design and reproduce stylized posters that would, they hoped, reflect the band and their music. Just Like Being There (2012) is a documentary interviewing these craftsmen/artists and their place in the rock scene (backed by a number of alternative bands like Spoon, Mogwai, Nada Surf, Ted Leo, and others).

Julie Klausner, with her podcast's well-maintained Redhead Hall of Fame, is one of today's greatest champions of the red-haired. This makes her the perfect correspondent to report back on Rock It Like a Redhead, a redhead-focused fashion and beauty event. Filmed as part of her most recent "How Was Your Week" live show, she, along with music man Ted Leo and her producer extraordinaire Chris "Spoony" Spooner, get "summer berry" feather hair braids, green nail polish, and, in Spoony's case, a complete ginger makeover that leaves him looking like the Joker. Most important, Julie Klausner gets to the bottom of who is a natural redhead and who is bottled (heaven forbid).

Friends Of Tom, Twitter pals, and recent tourmates Aimee Mann and Ted Leo have formed a band together. The duo is calling itself #Both, and it's already written at least a few songs. Though there’s no information yet about what those songs sound like, or whether there will ultimately be recorded evidence of said songs, it has been confirmed that Mann is playing bass on at least one of them. So, that’s something. #Both also has four shows already scheduled in the spring—two at Largo in Los Angeles March 8-9, and two at Bottom Of The ...

Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard (or, I'm sorry, "Benjamin Gibbard"… which does, I'll admit, look a lot nicer on an album sleeve) stopped by The Colbert Report last night to talk about his solo album Former Lives (my review) and none of his other interests or hobbies… or the Postal Service reunion that isn't going to happen so stop talking about it.
Though Gibbard sort of blew it during the interview (whoops), he brought a handful of "surprise" guests with him: Aimee Mann, Ted Leo, Superchunk's Jon Wurster and Jamie Edwards (on keyboards) all lent a helping hand on Ben/Aimee duet "Bigger Than Love." As an added web exclusive bonus (as debuted on Pets.com, naturally), Ben even returned to perform a solo rendition of hushed acoustic ballad "I'm Building A Fire." Check it all out below.

On Friday, comedy fans packed the room at the Bell House in Brooklyn for Tom Scharpling and Ted Leo's "Very Special Hurricane Benefit Show". The lineup included an eclectic mix of comics, musicians and celebrities, including Chris Elliott and Adam Resnick, Brooke Shields, John Hodgman, Andrew Wk, H. Jon Benjamin, Julie Klausner, Titus Andronicus, Kristen Schaal and Chris Gethard. Elliott's comedically-inclined offspring, Abby and Bridey, also attended.
When all was said and done the event raised $30,000. According to producer Marianne Ways, $10,000 of that was raised in auctions led by Hodgman and Schaal. The proceeds will be donated to Occupy Sandy and Staten Island's Siller Foundation Relief Fund.
Photographer Mindy Tucker was on hand to document the event. Check out her gallery below:...

The director of some of your favorite, funny music videos is coming together with one of the coolest indie rockers, for a night of comedy and do-gooding... our two favorite things.
Tom Scharpling, host of Wfmu's "The Best Show", and Ted Leo of Ted Leo & The Pharmacists are hosting "A Very Special Hurricane Benefit Show" on December 7th at The Bell House in Brooklyn, NY. The event will feature performances by the likes of Chris Elliott, John Hodgman, Andrew Wk, Jon Benjamin, Julie Klausner and more, and all proceeds will go to Occupy Sandy and The Siller Foundation, both of which provide relief to the areas hit hardest by Sandy..
Both Scharpling and Leo are from New Jersey, so the tragedy of the hurricane is very close to home. "We were both devastated by the scale of what happened," says Scharpling. "As soon as we had a working phone connection,...

It's Sunday afternoon, and you have our permission to read about something that isn't Hurricane Sandy or Election 2012 — at least for an hour or so. Below, some of our recommendations: "Slash and Burn" by Amanda Hess (Tomorrow): Why do straight women write gay fan fiction about boy bands? It's fun, for one thing. "This Movie Is Rated Wu" by Alex Pappademas (GQ): Now that he's completed his Russell Crowe-starring kung-fu movie, The Man with the Iron Fists, our second favorite Wu-Tanger (Rip Odb) is on his way to becoming "an important dude" in Hollywood. "Maurice Sendak" by Emma Brockes (The Believer): A newly published interview with the late children's book author, who "refused to cater to the bullshit of innocence." "A Chat With Ted Leo About 'The Weird Small Business' Of Indie Music" by John Lingan (The Awl): Much like Grizzly Bear, Ted Leo is...

First things first: Everyone go back and watch (or: watch for the first time, no judgment) "Voices Carry," the 1985 'Til Tuesday video starring one very young Aimee Mann. Once you've finished your homework, you are allowed to watch the video for "Labrador" (off Mann's most recent album, Charmer), which will suddenly look very familiar. As in, it is a shot-for-shot remake of the original "Voices Carry" video — except! Actual video director Tom Scharpling recruited Jon Hamm to play fake video director Tom Scharpling in a bit before the video, meaning we are all treated to a minute of Jon Hamm sporting a bad mustache and saying words like "collambrotive." Shouts also to Superchunk drummer (and Scharpling's comedy partner) Jon Wurster, who plays the music-video actor with cheesy gusto, and to Ted Leo for that wig. Watch closely; you'll see it. And here's the original, just in case:...

Fred Armisen is a man of many characters on "Saturday Night Live" and "Portlandia," but he's proven himself to be a tremendous talent otherwise when he's not on TV. Consider this performance of Armisen covering the Devo classic "Beautiful World" with the band The Forgiveness at Union Hall in Brooklyn last weekend.
Before launching a career in comedy, Armisen was a full-time musician, most notably as the drummer for Trenchmouth. In fact, his comedy career launched almost by accident, when Armisen recorded funny video interviews during downtime at the musical festival South By Southwest. Today, New Yorkers regularly spot Armisen popping into small clubs and bars to perform in comedy and music shows.
Luckily, this one was captured on video. The Union Hall show Armisen performed at, Heart of Darkness, regularly features darlings from the world of music and comedy spanning from Ted Leo to Reggie Watts. It's always hosted...

First there was The Areas of My Expertise. Then came More Information Than You Require. And now there is That Is All, the final book in John Hodgman's trilogy on "complete world knowledge."
The book will be released on November 1, and to make the people aware of its impendingness, Hodgman and director Tom Scharpling have created the above promo, featuring a list of cameos that is as thorough as the book's topics. Dick Cavett? Got him. Brooke Shieds? Got her. Justin Long waiting for Hodgman to return to the all-white "I'm a PC and I'm a Mac" room? Yes, indeed.
And the list goes on. Tucked away in the Celebrity Cameo Room of Hodgman's deranged millionaire's lair are also Scott Adsit, Fred Armisen, Samantha Bee, Paul Feig, Jason Jones, Ted Leo, John Lutz, Jack McBrayer, Christopher McCulloch, Nas, Vernon Reid, Paul Rudd, Kristen Schaal, Kenny Shopsin, and Questlove.

Ted Leo performed "The Little Smug Supper Club" for Incase Designs' Room 205 feature. The ultra-literate punk vet played the new rocker without his Pharmacists while unnamed roadies disassembled the stage around him. The preceding video in the ambitious series found Leo inside of a teepee performing "One Polaroid A Day" from 2010's Brutalist Bricks, and the website seems to suggest that another performance will be coming our way June 20....
