Exclusive: As the horses near the starting gate for Saturday’s running of the Kentucky Derby, Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions has lined up twin projects about Rich Strike, the upset winner of last year’s race.
Omaha is teaming with Amazon Prime Video to develop both a documentary and a scripted film based on the improbable win by the 80-to-1 longshot. The projects center on trainer Eric Reed, who overcame tragedy to engineer one of the biggest stunners in the nearly 150-year history of the Derby.
The scripted feature is a first for Omaha, which Manning launched after retiring from the NFL in 2016. Earlier this week, Deadline was the first to report on the company’s first foray into scripted comedy at NBC. Peter Chernin-backed non-scripted specialist Words + Pictures is also a producer of the documentary project.

NBC viewers were already seeing a lot of Maria Taylor on Sundays. Now they can be assured of seeing even more.
Taylor, the up-and-coming sportscaster who left ESPN last year for NBC Sports, was named host of “Football Night in America,” the show that precedes “Sunday Night Football” and garners one of the network’s biggest weekly audiences. She becomes the series’ first full-time female host, and becomes the latest in an impressive series of sports announcers to fill the role, including Bob Costas and Dan Patrick.
Taylor picks up lead duties on “Football Night” after Mike Tirico was named to provide play by play on “SNF” following a decision by Al Michaels to jump to Amazon to call “Thursday Night Football.” Last year’s “Football Night” crew included Tirico and Taylor along with Tony Dungy, Drew Brees, Chris Simms and Mike Florio, with Jac Collinsworth and Rodney Harrison holding forth from the game site.

Brian Rolapp, the NFL’s Chief Media and Business Officer, said the league would defer to the TV networks on how anthem protests will be handled during 2018 game telecasts.

It’s official. Mike Tirico has been named the new studio host for NBC’s primetime Sunday pregame show Football Night in America. Tirico was reported to have been the leading candidate to succeed Dan Patrick, who told the New York Post in March that he turned down a new five-year contract to continue as host. “I didn’t want to do it and not love doing it,” Patrick said at the time. He had served as Football Night‘s studio host since 2008.
Tirico will work alongside Fnia analysts Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison, and NFL Insider Mike Florio, from Studio 1 at NBC Sports’ International Broadcast Center in Stamford, Ct.
For the past two seasons, Tirico co-hosted Fnia from the game site. That role now will be filled by Liam McHugh, who will be joined on site most weeks by the Sunday Night Football team of Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth and Michele Tafoya.
