Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock has been known to take as long as eight years between albums, but nearly three decades into his band’s career, he’s ready to pick up the pace. Three years after the release of the well-received The Golden Casket, he’s already recorded enough songs for a new Modest Mouse album with producers including Jacknife Lee and Dave Sardy, and intends to put one out by next spring. “In my early days of putting out records, I wrote music every fucking day,” he tells...

Dave Matthews — yes, the one with the band — joined Dinosaur Jr. onstage during their show in Seattle Wednesday night (January 12th), where they all did a cover of Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer” together.
Dino Jr. like to bring their friends onstage. While they were in London last November, they brought out My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields to shred on a cover The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven.” In just the past week alone, they’ve recruited Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus, Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock, Red Fang’s Bryan Giles, and The Dandy Warhols’ Peter Holmström at various shows.
And Matthews wasn’t the only guest Wednesday, either: Mudhoney’s Mark Arm also assisted J Mascis and company for covers of The Stooges’ “T.V. Eye” and “Real Cool Time,” while Pearl Jam/Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron sat in during “Yeah We Know.” See some fan-captured clips...

Lol Tolhurst, Budgie, and Jacknife Lee have shared their debut album as a trio, Los Angeles.
A post-punk supergroup of sorts, drummers Tolhurst (formerly of The Cure) and Budgie (formerly of Siouxsie and the Banshees) teamed up with producer Lee for the project, which also features a who’s-who list of collaborators including U2’s The Edge, LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock, Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, more.
And though the band admittedly “stole” some of the music on Los Angeles from their musical heroes and their own back catalogs, they made sure to nod to their punk descendants, too: “We asked Mark Bowen from Idles to put some guitar on [‘Uh Oh’] and what we got was sonic destruction design courtesy of the dentist,” Tolhurst says in a press release, while Budgie says the tune draws from The Banshees’ own “Happy House.”

Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock sings lead on “We Got to Move,” the latest single from Lol Tolhurst, Budgie, and Jacknife Lee’s upcoming collaborative album Los Angeles. Check it out below.
“We Got to Move” begins with a cacophony of strings and percussion before beginning in earnest as an über-sycnopated synth rock song. “It’s not a parade, it’s just another fine day/ Come on and pick up the pace/ We’re so glad that you stayed,” Brock sings, before repeating the track’s urgent title. In the music video, Tolhurst and Budgie — the iconic former drummers of The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees, respectively — bang on trash cans as guest star Fred Armisen, apparently the most connected musician-turned-comedian of all time, goes to town in a rage room.

Modest Mouse were the perfect “right time, right place” band for the early Aughts indie-rock gold rush. They had legit Nineties alt-rock bona fides (Beat Happening’s Calvin Johnson co-produced Mouse’s high water mark, ’97’s The Lonesome Crowded West), and frontman Isaac Brock wrote quirky, clever songs in the traditions of Pavement, Pixies and early Beck, indulging a sort of unobjectionable, ready-for-primetime irony that perfectly soundtracked commercials between segments of The Office. One of those jingles, “Float On,” helped them score a platinum record, and before the decade was up,...

The song feels woozy and borderline psychedelic at the edges, but it’s anchored by a big indie rock sing-along hook: “We’re leaving, we’re leaving, we’re leaving/We’ll be home soon.”

Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard assembles a group of Seattle all-stars for a cover of “Highwayman,” the Jimmy Webb song about the eternal spirit that became the signature of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Johnny Cash’s country music supergroup, the Highwaymen.
As part of a benefit concert supporting Seattle Children’s Hospital, Gibbard recruited a small army of Pacific Northwest musicians: Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan, Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock, and Screaming Trees’ Mark Lanegan join Gibbard in each taking a verse of the song.

Modest Mouse have released a new song, “Ice Cream Party.” Produced by Andrew Weiss, the song follows the group’s recent tracks “Poison the Well” and “I’m Still Here,” both released earlier this year.
The shimmering, moody track clocks in at over six minutes and features frontman Isaac Brock crooning over the chorus, “There’s an ice cream party at my house/ an ice cream party at my house/ please come over.”

Modest Mouse have released a new song, “Poison the Wall,” ahead of their Record Store Day 7″. The gritty, static-laced rock number, which has a psychedelic tinge, is the band’s first release since their 2015 album Strangers to Ourselves. They previously teased the new music with a series of cryptic puzzles mailed out to fans earlier this month.
“Poison the Wall,” which clocks in at less than two and a half minutes, features the band’s signature angular indie rock sound alongside singer Isaac Brock’s growling croon. As the track builds,...

Modest Mouse lead singer Isaac Brock admits falling asleep while driving -- which caused a chain reaction wreck -- and only a stroke of luck separated him from Caitlyn Jenner's fate. Remember when Blink-182's Tom DeLonge claimed he had an alien encounter? Well, maybe it's a rock-and-roll trend: While discussing a single from Modest Mouse's forthcoming album Strangers to Ourselves (out March 17), front man Isaac Brock told Studio 360 he might have endured something similar. Brock recalled being stuck in a plane in a holding pattern while flying from Montana to Arizona in 1997. At the time he had no idea what was going on, but he essentially sat through the infamous Phoenix Lights sighting, in which Arizonans claimed they saw a V-shaped object, polka-dotted with lights, fly silently through the night sky. Brock said that for years he told no one but his mom and a close friend. "I didn't want to be that dude with the alien, with the UFO," he explained. The purported aliens didn't inspire anything directly (because Brock wouldn't have seen them), but Modest Mouse's...

Is your Christmas feeling a little bit safe, ordinary and routine? Are you looking for something decidedly different, or maybe a little freaky? Leave it to The Flaming Lips to spike your eggnog. Way back in 2008, the tripped out Oklahoma City band dropped their long-in-the-works feature film, "Christmas On Mars." Though the production values on the 16mm, black-and-white movie weren't high, it was just as odd as you might expect, with the movie telling the story of an astronaut colony hallucinating inside a dying space outpost on Mars. The result? As our review from way back when basically sums up, it's an interesting experiment rather than a completely satisfying or fully realized project (which is sorta the case for many things from The Flaming Lips camp). Still, the Wayne Coyne and Brad Beesley co-directed movie boasts cameos by Fred Armisen and Adam Goldberg (though scenes shot by Elijah Wood and...

Like many of his fellow British musicians, Johnny Marr has very strong opinions on recently deceased British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. "My thoughts are that if you see the word 'Thatcherism,' it’s not a word that stands for something good," Marr told Rolling Stone when we met him in his trailer backstage at Coachella. "I don’t think there’s any getting around that."
The guitarist was particularly put off by praise from the current regime in England. "I thought that the British government’s statement that she made Britain great again was false and really arrogant because everybody knows, left or right, that Margaret Thatcher didn’t make Britain great," he said. "If that was the case then why isn’t it? I felt like that was very, very disrespectful to generations of families who have never recovered from her legacy.

It would seem unreasonable to suspect that anyone who saw last year’s Country Strong thought that the film would be improved with some jokes about mental retardation, but here we are. Coming from documentary duo Ryan Page and Christopher Pomerenke, Queens of Country has one of those on-paper pedigrees that sound like comedic magic — a cast that includes Lizzy Caplan,Ron Livington, and Joe Lo Truglio, a plot that sounds both sorta silly and kinda touching, and a score written by Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock. And then there’s whatever in sweet Hell this is. Caplan stars as Jolene Gillis, “the prettiest girl in a small Arizona town” who is obsessed with classic country jams (we’re talking all those real queens of country — Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton — so at least there’s a smattering of truth in the film’s title). When Jolene finds an iPod stuffed with all her favorite songs...

Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock has been busy in the studio working on his group’s latest album – with Outkast’s Big Boi producing some tracks – but the enigmatic singer has just tacked another project on to his to-do list: scoring a film.
Brock has signed on to provide the audio accompaniment to a western comedy film (don’t see those very often) called Queens of Country. The movie is to be directed by Ryan Page and Christopher Pomerenke – the same fellas who brought us Blood Into Wine, a wine documentary starring Tool’s Maynard James Keenan. Rather appropriate since the singer is set to appear in the film as the antagonist – a bigger role than the cameos he’s used to.
Meanwhile, the lead actors are Ron Livingston, Sex and the City’s Jack Berger and star of the cult classic Office Space, and Lizzy Caplan of my favorite canceled show,...

A forthcoming high concept comedy is about to get a bit of twang thanks to an indie rock frontman, as it has been announced that the Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock will score the forthcoming Lizzy Caplan-starrer "Queens of Country." To recap, “Queens of Country” finds Caplan leading the cast playing a young woman obsessed with the titular singers, the likes of Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynette. When she discovers an iPod full of songs by those artists, she becomes intent on tracking down its owner, convinced that it’ll belong to her true love. The film is directed by…...

Modest Mouse showed off some brand new music this weekend. The Sasquatch! headliners set free a few tracks from their upcoming sixth album, which is being produced by Big Boi. It’s hard to tell whether or not Sir Lucious Left Foot has had his hands on these tracks. “Poison” revisits the raw musical power the group is known for and sounds like it could have been cut from the band’s debut release This is a Long Drive For Someone With Nothing to Think About. Isaac Brock’s screeching vocals stitch together driving guitar riffs and pounding drums. The other new track,...

The Heart Is A Drum Machine is a music documentary with a laundry list of notable interviewees, from film (Jason Schwartzman, Tim & Eric, Fairuza Balk, Elijah Wood) and music (Isaac Brock, Kimya Dawson, George Clinton, John Doe). The Heart Is A Drum Machine (The Score) is, of course, the music behind the movie, created by The Flaming Lips’ multi-instrumental genius, Steven Drozd. Remember "Christmas On Mars"? No? That film, a very low-budget sci-fi tale, took about seven years to complete with The Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne calling in favors to a plethora of people including Steve Burns, Modest Mouse leader Isaac Brock, Adam Goldberg, Fred Armisen and Elijah Wood. And when it did finally come out, no one really saw it (and it wasn't that great). Wolf Parade are back -- all together -- for the first time since 2008's "At Mount Zoomer," and are trying to bend their sound back to a more fun, warmer mount, apparently. Two songs were released by Sub Pop today, culled from the forthcoming "86 Expo," due June 29. "What Did My Lover Say?" has a hulking, moody rhythm section playing under the dramatic vocal declarations, with hard-working, high-end synths trying to overpower the darkness.
