With the 2024 Overlook Film Festival now officially in the rearview mirror, the annual New Orleans celebration of all things horror has announced the winners of its audience and jury awards.
The festival’s top prize, the Audience Award for Feature Film, went to “Oddity,” Damian Mc Carthy’s home invasion horror flick that was a breakout from the SXSW 2024 midnight lineup.
“’Oddity’ delivers a brilliant, bespoke, and tightly entertaining string of ideas that work stronger as a collection — with even these missteps feeling like they branch from a unified center,” IndieWire’s Alison Foreman wrote in her Overlook review of the film. “Similar to Mc Carthy’s earlier ‘Caveat,’ this 98-minute treat demands to be reassessed a second time. Thank the wooden boy it’s coming to streaming: a triumphant addition to the director’s growing filmography and a standout in Shudder’s carousel of kick-ass ghost stories.”

From pressed pennies to serial killer trophies, collections come in all shapes and sizes. Special assortments do not have to be uniform, nor does their common trait need to be immediately apparent. Just take the menagerie of artifacts in the basement from “Cabin in the Woods” or the museum of haunted items central to “The Conjuring” series. In fact, some of the best collections are really puzzles holding the solutions to even more arcane mysteries.
Such is the case with “Oddity,” writer/director Damian Mc Carthy’s second feature film, which premiered at SXSW as part of festival’s midnight lineup on March 8. Featuring a steely blind psychic (Carolyn Bracken) as its supernatural star and a menacing wooden mannequin as its scary centerpiece, this mostly single-location thriller is made in an almost-but-not-quite vaudevillian style that feels spiritually akin to “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.” It’s a richly...

Damian McCarthy sure does love a creepy antique. If you don’t recall the director’s previous effort Caveat, you at least remember the film’s desiccated stuffed bunny which featured heavily in its plot about sick family secrets hiding within the bones of a remote Irish house. McCarthy scales-up the prop-fetishism (and scares!) in Oddity, which centers around a terrifying human-size wooden effigy that may hold the key to righting a wrong committed against an innocent women.
Carolyn Bracken (You Are Not My Mother) stars as Dani, who answers the door one night and is greeted by a mysterious man named Olin Boole (Tadhg Murphy) who claims that she has an intruder in her home. Initially skeptical, she decides to let the man in before the film leaps forward. A while later, Boole has died after taking the fall for Dani’s murder and her doctor husband Ted (Gwilym Lee...

There are quite a few movies with two things that I wouldn’t put together normally that get thrust into each other for our entertainment. Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus, Ninjas vs Zombies, Cowboys vs Vampires (yes these are all actual movies that I have seen) and now the apocalypse and clowns.
Like many movies with crazy-sounding themes, the title alone does get your attention but the story itself is actually as simple as it could be. An electrical and technological blackout has hit Ireland and now anarchy and chaos have hit the country. A group of mostly failed clowns have ended up together travelling the country and trying to survive. But, it might give them one last shot at the big time.

The original "Time Bandits" was likely a pivotal movie for many of our readers growing up, as it helped bring the wackiness and chaos of Terry Gilliam movies to younger audiences. I know that it was certainly my introduction to the director. Now, a brand new generation will be able to experience "Time Bandits" thanks to Taika Waititi.

"What we're doing is insanely risky." Uh oh, that doesn't sound good. Hulu has revealed the official trailer for an emotionally-charged new series called Conversation with Friends, adapted from the book of the same name by Sally Rooney - who also wrote the book "Normal People" that became a hit BBC show. This new series is about two Dublin college students, Frances & Bobbi, and the strange, unexpected connection that they forge with married couple, Melissa and Nick. Frances falls for Nick, but gets into trouble with this four-way relationship. "However amusing Frances and Nick's flirtation seems at first, it begins to give way to a strange--and then painful--intimacy." The series stars Alison Oliver, Joe Alywn, Sasha Lane, and Jemima Kirk as the main four, plus Tadhg Murphy and Emmanuel Okoye. This looks like a painfully authentic series about the trials & tribulations of love, and how intense and beautiful it can be.

In the opening scene of Chino Moya’s grimmer-than-Grimm dystopian fairy tale collection, “Undergods,” a pair of grungy near-future garbagemen scour the ruins of a ghostly former metropolis looking for bodies. Like the Black Plague cleanup crew in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” — the occasionally too-efficient “bring out your dead!” guys — it doesn’t matter whether the corpses they come across are even fully deceased: The collectors toss the bodies into the back of their cart either way. Should the poor souls turn out to still be alive, they can always sell them for precious cans of scarce food back at the depot.
Moya’s vision may be bleak — and “vision” is the right word to describe the Spanish-born director’s stunning capacity to create images and atmosphere — but there’s something unnervingly familiar about the world he creates in his feature debut. Between that twisted introductory vignette and...

I’ve mentioned it many times before but I really enjoy a good anthology movie. I’m not sure exactly why but from the classic eighties horror anthologies to the more modern takes on genres, they always grab my attention. Undergods manages to have a style and tone like no other anthology I have seen before.
The ‘wrap-around’ works much better than many other anthology movies, as we see two street scavengers, K & Z, who are loading dead bodies into their truck while chatting about their dreams. These chats lead to the other ‘segments’ of the movie. This wrap-around introduces us to the world that it is all set in. A bleak, industrial ‘future’ that is full of grey,...

The only question is – was Dolly Wilde the right girl to build?
Directed by British director Coky Giedroyć and written by Caitlin Moran, based on her beloved number one Sunday Times bestseller of the same name, the film also stars Alfie Allen, Paddy Considine, Chris O’Dowd, Emma Thompson, Sarah Solemani, Laurie Kynaston, Joanna Scanlan, Arinzé Kene, Frank Dillane, Tadhg Murphy and Ziggy Heath.

Enda Walsh knows his Samuel Beckett. Walsh’s play “Ballyturk” is a 21st- century variation on “Waiting for Godot,” and it opened Sunday at Brooklyn’s St. Ann’s Warehouse after a run at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre. Besides the mash-up of pop tunes that actors Tadhg Murphy and Mikel Murfi dance, run, exercise or shimmy to while dousing each other with baby powder, the major departure from Beckett’s classic is that Godot or God or the Angel of Death (Olwen Fouere) shows up halfway through this 90-minute play to make her case. Stephen Rea played the role in the original National Theatre production three...
