The popular 1990s animated TV series ‘Gargoyles’, which defined the childhood of many, has been up for a live-action adaptation for a long while now. Now, Oscar winning actor-director Kenneth Branagh is rumoured to direct a live action movie of ‘Gargoyles’.
As reported by ‘Collider’, the news comes as courtesy of the English actor’s hometown paper of the Belfast Telegraph reported that the director-actor will be at the helm of affairs.
‘Gargoyles’ became a very big pop-culture hit in the 1990s, with attempts of adapting it into a feature film dating all the way back to the late 1990s. However, the attempts didn’t pan out leading to the project going into development hell. It was later brought back into development in 2010 when ‘X-Men’ movie producer Lauren Shuler Donner and ‘Wolverine and The X-Men’ writer Zoe Green began working on a film treatment.

The next edition of Universal’s 1988 cult classic comedy Midnight Run is finally happening after fits and starts throughout the years this time as a sequel we’re told. Regina Hall is set to star and produce in the feature which is being written by Brooklyn Nine-Nine scribe Aeysha Carr and also produced by Jesse Collins.
The details of the new version are being kept under wraps. The original movie marked multi-Oscar winner Robert De Niro’s pivot into broad mainstream comedy, the actor playing Jack Walsh, a bounty hunter whose job it is to collect mob accountant, Jonathan Mardukas, played by the late Charles Grodin, and get him to Los Angeles. The only thing is the accountant can’t fly, putting the easily irritable bounty hunter and fastidious accountant on an endless road trip in which they’re pursued by the Feds and a rival bounty hunter, Marvin Dorfler,...

Disney’s Gargoyles may have only lasted for three seasons and 78 episodes between 1994 and 1997, but fans of a certain age remember it as one of the best animated shows of the era. The series centered on a group of the titular creatures that found themselves reanimated in present-day New York having spent a thousand years encased in stone, and followed their adventures as the Big Apple’s new nocturnal protectors.
Gargoyles has long been acclaimed as a show that was well ahead of its time, adopting a darker tone than most of its contemporaries and incorporating both complex story arcs and elements of Shakespearean melodrama. Fans have been clamoring for the short-lived series to be rebooted for a long time now, and actor Keith David, who voiced main character Goliath, seems just as eager to reprise the role.

Back in the spring of 2012, a sequel to the action comedy Midnight Run starring Robert De Niro and Charlies Grodin was being developed with a script from Tim Dowling (Role Models), rewritten by David Elliot and Paul Lovett (G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra), and Brett Ratner being lined up to direct. We've yet to hear anymore information on that potential plan, but at the time De Niro was excited to do the sequel, but the mostly retired Grodin wasn't ready to jump at the opportunity. The last movie Grodin made was The Ex in 2006, but now The Wrap reports he's taken a role in Noah Baumbach's new film While We're Young. The film follows a free-spirited Brooklynite twenty-something couple who inspires an uptight documentarian and his wife to loosen up. Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts are playing the older couple in this scenario while Amanda Seyfried and Adam Driver...

"G.I. Joe" screenwriters David Elliot and Paul Lovett claim their ideas for the sequel were snatched, and now they're suing. Lovett and Elliot have filed a $23 million copyright infringement lawsuit against Paramount, MGM, Hasbro, and production company Di Bonaventura Pictures, along with a "breach of implied contract," according to Deadline. Deadline reports, "Not long after that film came out, they were requested to put together some ideas for a sequel with the understanding that they would get the scribe gig on the movie if their ideas were accepted." Lovett and Elliot are claiming that, more than tossing ideas around, they discussed their pitch for the sequel with the producers in person, over the phone, and through email. The complaint, which you can read on Deadline.com, notes that their pitch included "original plotlines, themes, characters, relationships, settings, scenes, sequences, dialogue, mood, pacing and fictional inventions for the Sequel." With the eagerly-anticipated (at least by me) sequel set to hit cinemas this Wednesday I thought – as part of our <<Rewind strand – I’d go back and re-watch G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, the original live action adaptation of the 80′s cartoon series and long-running action figure line, directed by Stephen Sommers.
Set in the not too distant future, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra opens with Army buddies Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) transporting a deadly nanomite weapon that’s been manufactured by Scottish arms magnate McCullen (Christopher Eccleston). However McCullen, who is also a member of terrorist organisation Cobra, is playing both sides and plans to steal his own device back and unleash the nanomites on an unsuspecting world.

With a fifth Midnight Run film seemingly back on the radar, Robert De Niro has been discussing the possibility of a further sequel...
Last month, it was reported that a long rumoured Midnight Run sequel was moving ahead, and that Brett Ratner was attached to direct. Seemingly this sequel will gloss over the three made for TV sequels Another Midnight Run, Midnight Runaround and Midnight Run For Your Life.
Whilst the addition of Mr Ratner to a wholly unnecessary sequel was enough to induce high levels of scorn, one area of promise was the fact that the initial pass at the script was written by Role Models scribe Tim Dowling. We like Role Models a lot.
Sadly though his script has been passed onto G.I. Joe screenwriters David Elliot and Paul Lovett to do further work, and it’s their draft that has been passed to Robert De Niro.

At the end of April, Universal Studios celebrates its 100th anniversary. To mark the milestone, the studio has a heavy presence at the eleventh annual Tribeca Film Festival. Its upcoming comedy, "The Five-Year Engagement," opened Tribeca on Wednesday night, and on Thursday, the fest hosted Judd Apatow and Robert De Niro for an hour-long discussion about their contributions to the studio.
De Niro has made twelve films for Universal throughout his lauded career, including "Meet the Parents," "Cape Fear," "The Deer Hunter," "Casino" and "Midnight Run." All four of Apatow's directorial efforts ("The 40-Year-Old Virgin," "Knocked Up," "Funny People" and the upcoming "This is 40") were released by Universal, as was the Apatow-produced comedy "Bridesmaids." (He also produced "Five-Year.") As Universal president and CEO Ron Meyer said at the beginning of the presentation, the two men are "an integral part of [the] organization."

We all issued a collective cringe and heavy sigh when, last month, it was announced that Brett Ratner would be helming a sequel to 1988′s Midnight Run. Robert De Niro‘s not raising his hands in objection — something tells me the original isn’t entirely “sacred” to him — and he’s even taking the extra step here, telling a group of attendees at Tribeca that he’ll be doing some writing on the film.
Although Tim Dowling‘s screenplay was already been the old once-over by David Elliot and Paul Lovett, De Niro offered this quick update; it was also revealed that the “in development” piece would pair his character, Jack Walsh, with the son of Charles Grodin‘s embezzler from the first time out. This is basically what we’ve heard for the past two years and, no, that doesn’t sound much better now that it’s official.

Sure, Midnight Run came out in 1988, but why not try to turn it into a franchise 20-odd years later?
Screenwriter Tim Dowling (Just Go with It, Role Models) was hired two years ago to write a sequel script that would allow Robert De Niro to reprise his role as bounty hunter Jack Walsh. Now the sequel may have a director in Brett Ratner (Tower Heist, the Rush Hour trilogy). Deadline reports that Ratner is in talks to direct the sequel for Universal, which has also hired screenwriters David Elliot and Paul Lovett (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Four Brothers) to rewrite Dowling's script.
De Niro is still attached to the project, but it's unlikely Charles Grodin — who played the embezzling mob accountant (Jonathan "The Duke" Mardukas) Walsh escorted to L.A. in the first movie — will step out of retirement to return.
This isn't the first attempt to create a Midnight Run franchise.

Universal Pictures is moving ahead on Midnight Run 2. Deadline reports that the studio has hired writers David Elliot and Paul Lovett to rewrite the script. They are also negotiating with Brett Ratner to direct the sequel that has Robert De Niro attached to reprise his role as bounty hunter Jack Walsh. The film will be produced by De Niro and Jane Rosenthal's Tribeca along with Ratner’s Rat Entertainment.
Tim Dowling wrote the first draft of the film early last year. The sequel will "continue the storyline of Walsh, the ex-Chicago cop who, when last seen, set free the turncoat mob accountant The Duke at Lax and walked away with a wad of cash he'd use to open a coffee shop." At this time, it is not known if Charles Grodin will reprise his role.
Ratner has a lot of experience directing buddy comedies after getting his start with Rush Hour.

Back in the eighties there were several decent comedies that defined that era with Midnight Run being one of those films. Robert De Niro was in his prime, it had a strong supporting cast, and a decent storyline, but there’s a reason why it was "one and done". I didn’t see Martin Brest’s “Midnight Run” until just a few years ago. Don’t get me wrong — it’s a fine motion picture, and I thoroughly enjoyed the back-and-forth between stars Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin. However, the film didn’t live up to the hype, due in part, I think, to my dislike for Grodin. The guy just rubs me the wrong way. Apparently a lot of people adore this flick, so much so that someone wearing an expensive suit believes that we need a sequel. Universal recently hired David Elliot and Paul Lovett, the literary masterminds behind “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”, to pen a sequel to the 1988 comedy, which will chronicle the on-going adventures of badass ex-cop Jack Walsh (De Niro). There have been a lot of small, brilliant pieces of movie news lately. Cool ideas and interesting people attached to projects with potential. That’s why it’s particularly bitter to hear news that feels a lot like gargling acid. This specific swallow comes from Deadline Fredericksburg who report that Universal is back to mining their own library to come up with Midnight Run 2. Maybe a sequel would be a good idea. Who knows. Martin Brest had his own sins as a director, but Beverly Hills Cop and Midnight Run were his best. It’s tough that he ended his career on Gigli, but it might be even tougher that Universal is working with Brett Ratner to direct a sequel to the Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin-starring flick about an accountant trying his best to keep breathing while the FBI, some bounty hunters and the mob are on his tail. Deadline reports that Brett Ratner (Tower Heist, Rush Hour) has now entered talks to sit in the director’s chair which has sent the Internet film community into a furious rage but just like his recent attachment to the MTV origins movie “I Want My MTV”, I actually think this is a property where he could deliver something decent out of. The long rumoured sequel to Midnight Run 2 might just be pressing ahead. And Brett Ratner is apparently in talks to direct...
I like to think that, at some point last week, Michael Bay and Brett Ratner got together for a drink. The topic of conversation? How to start baiting movie nerds again.
“I’ve got it!”, piped up Bay. “I’ll talk for 16 seconds about a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, and see if I can melt the Internet!”. “You going to throw in that alien shit?”, asked Ratner. “Hell yes!”, retorted Bay, as he downed his luxurious cocktail and promptly threw the gauntlet down to Ratner. “You’re going to have to do something to top that”, he smirked.
Midnight Run 2, then.
It’s a project that’s been in quiet gestation for a little while, having been talked about to not much warmth a year or two ago.

Brett Ratner is looking to go on the run with Robert De Niro. The "Tower Heist" director is reportedly in talks with Universal to helm "Midnight Run 2", a sequel to the 1988 film that starred De Niro as a bounty hunter tasked with bringing in a white-collar criminal (Charles Grodin) wanted by both the Mob and the FBI. De Niro is already on board to reprise his role in the follow-up, which he is also producing, with "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" scribes David Elliot and Paul Lovett hired to rewrite a script by Tim Dowling ("This Means War",...

Brett Ratner is in negotiations to direct while David Elliot & Paul Lovett have been brought on to rewrite the script for the "Midnight Run" sequel at Universal Pictures says Deadline.
The profanity-laced original 1988 action-comedy road movie starred Robert De Niro as a bounty hunter on a cross-country journey attempting to bring back his latest catch, an embezzler (Charles Grodin).
Though not a major hit, the film was critically well-received and has scored a strong following in the two subsequent decades since its release.
Elliot & Lovett ("Four Brothers," "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra") will re-write an earlier script by Timothy Dowling ("Role Models") which teams De Niro's character with a young comedic foil.
De Niro remains attached to reprise his role and will produce along with Ratner and Jane Rosenthal.

"Looks like I'm walking."
Those were the last words uttered by bounty hunter Jack Walsh (Robert De Niro) just before the closing credits rolled in "Midnight Run," stranded in Los Angeles because his would-be cab driver couldn't break a thousand dollar bill.
Now, 24 years later, we'll soon be seeing whether Jack opened that coffee shop with the $200,000 given to him by his former bounty, mob accountant Jonathan 'The Duke' Mardukas (Charles Grodin), in "Midnight Run 2," according to Deadline.
Brett Ratner, who admittedly gave us another pretty great mismatched pair in the "Rush Hour" series, will be directing the sequel, with De Niro set to reprise his role as Walsh. No word on whether all but retired actor Charles Grodin will be returning as Mardukas, but he apparently expressed interest in doing so if the project became a reality.

Rumblings of a sequel to Midnight Run started to arise two years ago, when it was reported that Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin coming back together for a sequel to Midnight Run, the film that followed bounty hunter Jack Walsh (De Niro), a former Chicago cop, hunting a mob accountant played by Grodin in order to collect a $100,000 fee. The movie would be based on a script written by Tom Dowling, but news about the sequel hasn’t surfaced until now.
According to Deadline, new writers have been hired to pen the script and word is that Brett Ranter is ready to direct the movie for Universal. David Elliot and Paul Lovett (G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra) will rewrite Dowling’s script.

And you thought the dark and gritty Twain update would be today’s worst news? Wouldn’t that have been nice.
Deadline reports that Universal are putting their resources into Midnight Run 2, which Brett Ratner will direct from a Tim Dowling script that’s been rewritten by David Elliot and Paul Lovett. Before you ask, yes, Robert De Niro will return as bounty hunter Jack Walsh; he’s the one who started this whole discussion in 2010, anyway. Charles Grodin is a different matter, however. Although the (now retired) actor expressed a little basic interest nearly two years ago — and is reportedly “open to participating in this one if it comes up” — his participation still remains a big question mark, on account of his completely inactivity in recent years.
Some have hinted that, plot-wise, Midnight Run 2 would see Walsh going after the son of Grodin‘s character, Jonathan Mardukas.

Save for Al Pacino, there's no actor in Hollywood who has worked harder in the last ten years to undercut his own legacy than Robert De Niro. Formerly known as one of the greatest actors of all time, the two-time Oscar winner has spent the last ten years making absolute dreck like Showtime, Hide and Seek, Righteous Kill, New Year's Eve and the Meet The Parents sequels. But apparently he's not content with just making a mockery of his current career - he has to besmirch his legacy as well. Apparently a Midnight Run 2 is now in development with De Niro attached as Deadline reports that Universal has hired David Elliot and Paul Lovett to write the script and is currently in negotiations with Brett Ratner to direct. In the original, directed by Martin Brest, De Niro played Jack Walsh, a bounty hunter who has dreams of retirement but...

Talked about for years and years, we figured the proposed sequel to "Midnight Run" was one of those things -- like "Ghostbusters 3" -- that was never going to happen for a variety of reasons. But who knew that Brett Ratner, of all people, was going to be the guy to get this thing rolling?
Well, that appears to be the case, as Deadline reports that the shrimp enthusiast is now on board to direct, with Robert De Niro returning to star as well. The script by Tim Dowling ("Role Models") has been kicking around for a while, but now David Elliot and Paul Lovett ("G.I. Joe: Rise Of The Cobra," "Four Brothers") will do a rewrite. That doesn't instill confidence. Ages ago, it was said the story would team De Niro's bounty hunter Jack Walsh with up a younger convict who may or may not be the son of Jonathan "The Duke" Mardukas,...

Well, now a new writers have been hired, and Brett Ratner is ready to direct, so a play may be made to get him back. As for the writers, Deadline says David Elliot and Paul Lovett (G.I. Exclusive: Universal Pictures is picking up steam on Midnight Run 2, setting scribes David Elliot & Paul Lovett to rewrite it, and negotiating with Brett Ratner to helm a sequel that has Robert De Niro attached to reprise his role as bounty hunter Jack Walsh. De Niro and Jane Rosenthal’s Tribeca is producing with Ratner’s Rat Entertainment. The studio and Tribeca put the wheels in motion on the sequel early last year, when they hired Tim Dowling to write a draft. Elliot & Lovett, who were writers on G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and are working on the sequel to Four Brothers (which they also scripted) will continue the storyline of Walsh, the ex-Chicago cop who, when last seen, set free the turncoat mob accountant The Duke at Lax and walked away with a wad of cash he’d use to open a coffee shop. When news broke about...

Depending on your feelings towards the man and his films, this news will either have you high-fiving the nearest available pet / loved one / friend / stranger or contemplating building an apocalypse shelter out of old tin cans and cardboard boxes: Brett Ratner is now in negotiations to direct Universal’s long-gestating Midnight Run sequel. The return of Robert De Niro (who has been looking to make this happen for a while now) and Charles Grodin’s mismatched buddy comedy duo is a truly divisive issue. Some are itching to see more of Jack Walsh and Jonathan Mardukas while others would prefer that all involved simply be happy with the 1988 original.Universal is ploughing ahead with the idea, which, if pulled off well, could be one for the ages. Role Models co-writer Tim Dowling was hired early in 2010 to punch out a draft, but now De Niro and his co-producers have hired G.

Deadline has learned that Universal Pictures is negotiating with Brett Ratner ( Tower Heist ) to direct Midnight Run 2 and has set David Elliot and Paul Lovett to rewrite the script. Robert De Niro will reprise his role as bounty hunter Jack Walsh. Here's the synopsis of the 1988 action comedy: Jack Walsh (Robert De Niro) is a tough ex-cop turned bounty hunter. Jonathan 'The Duke' Mardukas (Charles Grodin) is a sensitive accountant who embezzled $15 million from the Mob, gave it to charity and then jumped bail. Jack's in for a cool $100,000 if he can deliver The Duke from New York to L.A. on time. And alive. Sounds like just another Midnight Run (a piece of cake in bounty hunter slang), but it turns into a cross-country chase. The FBI is after The Duke to testify - the Mob...

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra writers David Elliot and Paul Lovett sold their pitch of an action fantasy about stone gargoyles on buildings coming to life to Disney. Variety reported that producer Lauren Shuler Donner and Disney exec LouAnne Brickhouse joined the project as producers with the goal of creating a major franchise with multiple films, spin-off merchandise, TV shows, theme park rides and video games. Lovett and Elliot came to Disney with an original idea for Gargoyles as a replacement for the longtime movie project based on the animated cartoon series Gargoyles. Greg Weisman’s Gargoyles, originally aired from 1994 through 1997, followed the adventures of gargoyles from medieval Scotland who come back to live in ‘90s New York City and battle supernatural villains while adjusting to the modern world.

Quell your excitement, 90s nerds. According to Disney, this live-action exploration into the world of those stony skyscraper protectors, Gargoyles, will have nothing to do with the super awesome 90s cartoon they produced of the same name. Of course, the story is described as following statues on buildings coming to life who act as guardian angels over their city. So, yeah it.s pretty much the story from the Gargoyles cartoon. Another solid reason to cool your nerd jets is that scribes David Elliot and Paul Lovett are at the pen putting this one together. They have written some decent flicks in the past, The Watcher and Marky Mark vehicle Four Brothers, but their most recent claim to fame is the abomination that was G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra. If I need to tell you why having these two writers on board is a bad thing, you.re...

No, before you get too excited, this is not a re-imagining of the old TV movie of the week of the same name which features some of the late great Stan Winston's amazing monster effects. We're talking an entirely different property.
According to Variety, writing duo David Elliot and Paul Lovett (G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra) are the latest scribes to tackle a project that explores the world of gargoyles at Disney.
The two, whose credits also include Paramount's Four Brothers, pitched an original take to the Mouse House that the studio is keen on exploring as a live action film. Lauren Shuler Donner (the X-Men franchise) will produce.

Don't get your hopes up, this Gargoyles film is not an adaptation of the awesome animated series. Disney is developing a previously announced original Gargoyles film, and for some reason they've hired G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra screenwriters David Elliot and Paul Lovett to rewrite the script previously written by Zoe Green. The script for G.I. Joe was crap, so whatever excitement I had in this film project has now died.
The film is being produced by Lauren Shuler Donner of the X-Men franchise, and the story "centers on a world in which the stony statues on buildings come to life. Elliot and Lovett would portray them as guardian angels for the cities in which they reside."
It's basically the same concept of the animated series, but I'd much rather see an adaptation of the classic series than this! Why in the hell hasn't Disney done that yet?...

Disney has been trying to get a Gargoyles project to fly for some time now. The proposed film isn't tied to the animated series or the made-for-television flick of the same name. Instead, this is a new property the Mouse House hopes to exploit across various platforms - film, television, video games, theme parks, etc. That said, Variety reports Disney has hired writers David Elliot and Paul Lovett to pen a script. They're the duo that gave us G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra . Lauren Shuler Donner will produce. The film is being considered for live-action.
