Luke Combs is the man of the hour. The 59th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, April 9, and Combs came out on top with eight bids, including Entertainer of the Year. Check out the complete list of nominations here.
This is Combs’s fifth nomination in a row for Entertainer of the Year, an award he has yet to win. This year he’s up against Kane Brown, Jelly Roll, Cody Johnson, Chris Stapleton, Morgan Wallen and lone female nominee Lainey Wilson. Women are consistently underrepresented in Entertainer of the Year, though Carrie Underwood won in 2020 (in a tie with Thomas Rhett) and Miranda Lambert finally prevailed in 2022. But we mustn’t underestimate Wilson here. She pulled off a huge upset at the CMA Awards last fall, claiming Entertainer of the Year despite being relatively new on the scene.

Brittany Howard’s career has been one of ever-expanding sonic exploration, from the nakedly retro rock ‘n’ soul of the Alabama Shakes’s Boys & Girls to the gleeful eclecticism of her solo debut, Jaime. Howard’s sophomore effort, What Now, finds her once again stylistically untethered, exploring funk-rock, psychedelia, techno, soft jazz, new age, and more. Sonically, it’s a triumph, a delicately textured musical realm that begs to be luxuriated in.
What’s missing from the album is the same level of songwriting that elevated Howard’s previous work. There are a few standout tracks, but no burrowing hooks on the level of “Don’t Wanna Fight” or “Stay High.” The only time she comes close to those earlier songs is on the propulsive “Red Flags,” its circular melody continuously building in intensity as Howard recounts a toxic relationship morphing from euphoria to abuse. Jazz drummer Nate Smith, the album’s sturdy backbone,...

Nate Smith reckons with the memory of an old flame in the music video for “World on Fire.” The song first rolled out in April for the deluxe version of his self-titled debut album and follows the success of his breakout radio hit, “Whiskey on You.”
The clip sees the country singer and his band perform against a blazing background as Smith roars out the chorus, “You set my world on fire/Yeah, it’s all long gone/I’m watching flames get higher/And I can’t move on.

Jenny Lewis has readied a new album called Joy’All. The project is out today, June 9th, via her new label Blue Note/Capitol Records.
A lot’s changed since Lewis’ last album, 2019’s On the Line — namely, a global pandemic that shut the world down and inspired the songwriter to approach music differently. Some songs on Joy’All predate Covid, while others came out of a world-class songwriting group Lewis joined, led by none other than Beck Hansen.
“I started writing some of these songs on the road, pre-pandemic… and then put them aside as the world shut down, and then from my home in Nashville in early 2021, I joined a week-long virtual songwriting workshop with a handful of amazing artists, hosted by Beck,” Lewis shared in a statement. “The challenge was to write one song every day for seven days, with guidelines from Beck. This year’s Stagecoach Festival was a love letter to country music’s past and a nod to its wide-open future. While the festival — the genre’s largest, most rollicking reunion that takes place in California’s low desert the week after Coachella — was sparse on guest appearances (no Axl Rose, this time), the level of showmanship and raw talent was high.
