It’s been one week since Edgar Wright’s heist movie masterpiece Baby Driver (read our five star review here) screeched onto the big screen, offering audiences a fun and, more importantly, unique alternative to the usual Summer blockbusters. It’s success has even seen Sony approach Wright about a potential sequel. But few people know that this movie has been in development since 1994. Proof of that can found in the music video for Mint Royale’s Blue Song that Wright directed way back in 2003. Starring Noel Fielding (as well as Fielding’s Mighty Boosh co-hort Julian Barret and Wright regulars Michael Smiley and Nick Frost) in the role that would eventually go to Ansel Elgort, it adapts the movies opening and showcased what the director had planned for the future hit. The worst thing about it is that it makes me long for a version of the movie with this cast.

Can’t wait to see “Baby Driver,” the new Edgar Wright film? Get a feel for the hit action pic by watching the music video for “Mint Royale” by Blue Song. The video is conceptually simple. A getaway driver, played by British comedian Noel Fielding, waits for the bank robbers — played by Julian Barratt, Nick Frost and Michael Smiley — to come back from their heist. He gives them the length of the song to get in and get out. In the meantime he encounters a number of obstacles. A man in a suit walks by and peaks in. A security guard approaches.

Edgar Wright's films are often likened to musicals, with his precise use of editing and shot choices giving us some of the most stylish comedy films of the century. His latest, Baby Driver, isn't a comedy per se, but “a musical with car chases”, or “An American In Paris on wheels and crack smoke”, as an elated Guillermo del Toro described it on Twitter.
Centring around Ansel Elgort's Baby, a getaway driver who does his best work while listening to a personal soundtrack, it seems like the film Wright was born to make. He had the idea for the film after making his first feature,...

Now this is what I call a summer movie. Baby Driver has it all: thrills, laughs, sex, nonstop action, a killer soundtrack, a star-making performance from Ansel Elgort and a director – Edgar Wright – who can knock the wind out of you. When was the last time to got pumped by a car chase? This revved-up ride of a movie is loaded with them, and they're spectacular.
Ok, let's back up and get our bearings. Elgort, the teen dream of The Fault in Our Stars, plays Baby, an Atlanta getaway driver with chronic tinnitus.

So this one's been on the slate for a while. I hear you had the idea for it something like 20 years ago now?
Yeah, it's funny, when I've mentioned that kind of timeline - having the idea 22 years ago - it's true in a sense that I heard a song and visualised a car chase, which is John Spencer Blues Explosion's Bellbottoms,...

The best cinematic action of 2017 in three parts from the movies of SXSW.
It was heavier than I had anticipated. At the age of 16, if my memory serves me correctly, it was the first time I’d ever held a real gun. In the midwest, surrounded by a family full of avid hunters, this was a right of passage. At some point an uncle or two would want to show you the awesome power of a real firearm, both as appreciation for the weapon’s power and as a lesson in the seriousness of its deadly potential. The weight of the revolver in my hand brought both of these concepts to life with immediacy. It’s hard to hold a real gun and not be in awe and at least a little terrified. It’s a feeling I’ll never shake, perhaps one of those moments in which a teenager’s journey toward adulthood was accelerated a...

Twenty-two years ago, writer-director Edgar Wright was constantly listening to the album “Orange” by the rock group The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.
“The first track on the album, ‘Bellbottoms,’ which is a fantastic rock track, I just listened to that song over and over again,” said Wright at a Q&A during the 2017 SXSW Film Festival. “I don’t know what it was, but I just thought that would make a great car chase song.”
Wright laid in his bedroom listening to the song on repeat, visualizing a car chase set to “Bellbottoms.” He also started coming up with the idea of a character: a getaway driver for a bank heist, who cannot do his job properly without the right music playing.
That core idea is the premise of Wright’s new film,...

Like every Edgar Wright movie since “Shaun of the Dead,” the director’s fifth feature, “Baby Driver,” takes a ludicrous concept and turns it into a brilliant exercise in high style and a rush of big ideas. The director’s most ambitious work to date is a wildly successful romantic heist comedy, propelled from scene to scene with a lively soundtrack that elevates its slick chase scenes into a realm that develops its own satisfying beat.
If Busby Berkeley made “Grand Theft Auto,” it might look something like this exuberant comic caper, in which young getaway driver Baby (Ansel Elgort) speeds through highways and back alleys seemingly impervious to police advances so long as he has a smooth beat to guide his maneuvers. Operating under the employ of robbery maestro Doc (a stern Kevin Spacey), Baby quietly works off a debt to his boss by hauling two-bit criminals out of harm’s way,...

On the eve of production firing up on Edgar Wright’s crime drama Baby Driver, Daredevil actor Jon Bernthal has inked a deal to join the director’s enviable ensemble.
Deadline has the scoop, revealing that Bernthal is on board to play Griff, a key member of the star-studded picture that revolves around Ansel Elgort’s baby-faced getaway driver – hence the title. Partly inspired by the music video for Mint Royale’s “Blue Song” music video, one which Wright himself directed, Baby Driver has Elgort’s gifted speedster carry out a series of white-knuckle rides for different mobsters.
A hearing condition and his trusty personal soundtrack is enough for our unlikely hero to blur out the white noise, but things go from bad to life-threatening after one planned heist is sent careering off the rails, and it seems to have something to do with Kevin Spacey’s criminal kingpin, Doc.

Straight from Star Wars Celebration V, it's a deleted scene from "Return of the Jedi." Just kidding. That clip's been taken down, unfortunately, and all I've got is a consolation. The below video is a "Special Edition" of a video posted to YouTube last fall of an Imperial Stormtrooper dancing to Mint Royale's remix of "Singin' in the Rain." The funny thing is it's making fun of the "Star Wars" Special Editions by inserting unnecessary CGI mini-troopers and an R2-D2, but this is simply just another meme. But I figured I'd post it, because I was reminded of the connection…...

The cast of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World were collectively required to master a vast array of new skills for the third film from British director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz). Those many non-musicians who essay band members in the movie had to learn how to play instruments so that they could convincingly thrash along to songs penned by such real-life acts as Beck and Canadian rock band Broken Social Scene. Meanwhile, those involved in the film’s numerous fight sequences were made to attend an intensive martial arts course that preceded the film’s six month Toronto shoot.

If you've seen "(500) Days of Summer," then you might know it's screenplay is highly unusual. There's a non-linear structure, an omniscient narrator, a dance number, a sequence entirely unfolding in split-screen, and huge block letters in 20 point font. But at one point it was even more unusual.
Screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber actually included an "appendix" at the end of the script, a series of disconnected pages designed to make the relationship at the story's core feel like something that really took place. Appendix A, for example, was a page of ticket stubs from concerts Tom allegedly took Summer to. Appendix B was a hand-written letter she once wrote him from a plane. And Appendix C was the tracklistings for three very different mix tapes Tom made Summer during their brief but memorable relationship.
The appendix idea was eventually scrapped but some of those pages survived. Thanks to Scott Neustadter,...

Transforming from cult favorite to international sensation, surrealist comedy troupe The Mighty Boosh offer up a third season, employing the familiar blend of anarchic fantasy and bizarre musical numbers to once more wreak their own singular brand of havoc on the unsuspecting laws of time, space, and good taste. Continuing to follow the adventures and mishaps of hapless duo Howard Moon (Barratt) and Vince Noir, still desperately trying to raise the profile of their shambolic musical act (the titular Mighty Boosh), season three ushers in yet another change of venue.

Britain's Got Talent producers have been accused of stealing the concept for George Sampson's winning dance routine. Young breakdancer George was voted as the winner of the ITV1 talent series last weekend after impressing the public with his 'Singing In The Rain' performance. Failed Talent hopeful Howard Fifer, 28, has now claimed that he performed an almost identical routine at the show's auditions. He used the same Mint Royale track for the performance, as well as many of the same dance moves. "My act was break-dancing in the rain. George's routine was exactly the same as mine and I can't believe it was a coincidence," Howard told the News of the World. "I believe the producers saw me and thought it was a good concept, and wanted George to perform it on the show. They still have my audition (more)...
