In 1952, Shantz won the American League Most Valuable Player Award. A
left-handed pitcher, Shantz finished the season with a 24-7 record for
a Philadelphia Athletics team that won barely half its games.
Was selected to Major League Baseball's American League All-Star team
three times (1951, 1952 and 1957)
Played Major League Baseball for 16 years, mostly with the
Philadelphia/Kansas City Athletics and New York Yankees.
On April 10, 1962, Bobby Shantz started and won the first game in the history of Major League Baseball in Houston, defeating the Chicago Cubs 11-2 in a sparkling 9 inning complete game effort for the Houston Colt .45s.
