As Bwe’s resident Angry Pointer-Outer That Super Hot Actresses Aren’t F***ing Nerds, I am obligated to call everyone’s attention to the latest perpetrator, one Anne Hathaway. To be clear, I don’t dislike Anne Hathaway, and I’m not totally sure why she’s the latest celeb to slip into that “60% Of My Female Friends Randomly Hate Her” Zone (previously the “ScarJo Zone”). But on last night’s Daily Show episode, Hathaway became the latest very attractive actress to attempt to appear self-deprecating and down-to-earth by co-opting the (now basically meaningless) term “nerd,” opening her interview with this crowd-pandering exchange: Hathaway: [Gesturing to crowd] So these are the nerds? [Referencing a "nerd" joke Jon Stewart made earlier in the ep] [Crowd Woos] Hathaway: My people!!! [More cheering] Stewart: …How are you doing? So when you say ‘nerds,’ what would you consider nerdly pursuits, do you have nerdly pursuits? Hathaway: I’m a Scrabble fiend. The New York Post — a publication characterized by its capacity for objectivity and restraint — exhibited both of its trademark qualities in spades with this morning’s highly anticipated “Osama Bin Laden Is Dead” cover: That’s it? Just the ol’ standard newspaper headline-phrase “Nailing the bastard”? No giant F-words in all caps? Or added speech bubbles with the phrase “warm up the virgins”? Or V-j Day crowds celebrating Paris Hilton’s prison release with an Std pun? It is this extreme professionalism whichALRIGHTALRIGHT, point made. Though in a way, as my colleague Eric Cunningham put it when the news first broke, “Tonight, we are all the New York Post.”...
