Image
If you were a kid or teen in the 2000s, it's likely that you watched at least one movie featuring Josh Hutcherson, and it's also likely that you had a favorite movie with him in it. Hutcherson began acting in the early 2000s and had minor roles in a variety of TV shows before making his film debut in 2003's "American Splendor." From there, Hutcherson was launched into stardom and starred in a number of popular films throughout the decade, including "Kicking & Screaming," "Zathura: A Space Adventure," and "Journey to the Center of the Earth." By the 2010s, Hutcherson took on more mature roles and arguably landed his most popular role as Peeta Mellark in "The Hunger Games," which he would reprise for the remaining three movies in the beloved film series.

Saint Teresa of Jesus Fiction Feature, Directed by ‘The Bride’s’ Paula Ortiz, Swooped on by Filmax (Exclusive)
Image
Spanish mini-major Filmax has picked up international sales rights to “Teresa,” the new feature by Paula Ortiz, a fictional story turning on the prominent Spanish mystic and religious reformer Saint Teresa of Jesus.

“Teresa” marks the big screen adaptation of Spaniard playwright Juan Mayorga’s stage play ”La lengua en pedazos,” which narrates a meeting between Saint Teresa of Jesus – also known as Teresa de Ávila – and a character called The Inquisitor.

The feature is not a classic biopic, but rather a free adaptation of the text written by Mayorga – a winner of Spain’s National Prize for Dramatic Literature – which in turn, is based on “The Book of Life,” by Saint Teresa herself.

In the movie, Teresa patiently awaits the Inquisitor’s arrival and judgement. His visit and his words will determine her future. They will hold a religious and dialectical duel, where the question will be if she is set free,...

Benicio Del Toro in Paradise Lost (2014)
Criminals are often harrowingly perceived to be dangerous people who would ruthlessly do whatever it takes to defeat their enemies, obtain power and indulge their every corrupt desire. But once the public begins to delve into their private lives, in an effort to better understand why they make the decisions they do, the world begins to understand that these mobsters often feel that they’re not completely morally corrupt, as family is the most sacred thing to them. That powerful insight is grippingly presented in the thriller ‘Escobar: Paradise Lost,’ which marks the feature film writing and directorial debuts of actor Andrea Di Stefano. The drama emphasizes that the real-life title [ Read More ]

Benicio Del Toro and Josh Hutcherson: The Hollywood Interview
Benicio Del Toro and Josh Hutcherson Find Paradise Lost in Escobar

By Alex Simon

Most people know Paradise Lost as the title of John Milton’s epic poem, first published in 1667, concerning the Biblical story of the Fall of Man: the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Milton's purpose, stated in Book I, is to "justify the ways of God to men.” With this metaphor in mind, writer/director Andrea De Stefano has fashioned a new piece of historical fiction, Escobar: Paradise Lost, putting a wide-eyed Canadian tourist named Nick (Josh Hutcherson) who has traveled to 1988-era Colombia looking for surf, sand and fun with his brother (Brady Corbet) at the story's center. After falling hard for a local beauty (Claudia Traisac), Nick is introduced to her favorite uncle, one Pablo Escobar (Oscar-winner Benicio Del Toro), who takes...

Benicio Del Toro in Paradise Lost (2014)
Movie Review: Escobar: Paradise Lost Could Have Used More Escobar
Benicio Del Toro in Paradise Lost (2014)
There’s a good idea floating around somewhere inside Escobar: Paradise Lost. This thriller, about a young Canadian surfer who finds himself tight with infamous Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, starts before Escobar had become Public Enemy No. 1 in his own country, back when he was a popular politician. Showing the allure and gradual corruption of power through the eyes of a third party — sort of a mixture of The Great Gatsby and Scarface — is a solid conceit. But Andrea Di Stefano’s underbaked film doesn’t quite know what to do with it.Josh Hutcherson is Nick, a young man surfing the waves of Colombia’s beaches with his brother Dylan (Brady Corbet) when he meets the beautiful, energetic Maria (Claudia Traisac). She, it turns out, is the niece of Pablo Escobar (Benicio del Toro), a popular figure who lives on a sprawling hacienda and gives away just...

Drug War Diaries: Di Stefano’s Peripheral Take on Famed Drug Lord’s Activities

For those wishing to learn much of anything about famed Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, the logical place to start is not with Andrea Di Stefano’s feature directorial debut, Escobar: Paradise Lost, a starry depiction relegating its titular drug titan to the sidelines. True, there are aspects worthy of admiration, thanks mostly to moments with a paunchy Benicio Del Toro as the notorious “King of Cocaine.” But Di Stefano chooses to focus on the perspective of a token white outsider, presented in a formula used to design mainstream comedies—idealistic young man meets sexy young woman, inadvertently leading to his involvement with her ‘kooky’ familial environment.

In 1991, Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar (Del Toro) has resigned himself to the fact he must turn himself into authorities. He rallies a small crew together, including nephew-in-law Nick...

Escobar: Paradise Lost Review
Escobar: Paradise Lost is a fine thriller that cannot live up to its title’s pretensions. Both parts before and after the colon promise a dramatic heft the film does not quite achieve. It is neither a probing, complex character study of Colombia’s most notorious drug kingpin nor is it a rich drama of sordid themes that its Milton-alluding subtitle suggests. Instead, the debut from Italian actor Andrea Di Stefano is an exciting cat-and-mouse thriller between a monstrous villain and his niece’s aloof, Canadian husband, the man who gets caught up in a whirlwind of Colombian corruption.

The young man on the run is Nick Brady (Josh Hutcherson), a Canadian surfer who we first see with his older brother (Brady Corbet) on the idyllic Colombian coastline. Boarding and working at equal measure, Nick finds his deepest salvation in the form of Maria (Claudia Traisac), a beautiful native who quickly falls for him.

Trailer for Escobar: Paradise Lost with Benicio Del Toro
Another trailer has been released for the Pablo Escobar film Escobar: Paradise Lost. The movie was previously just called Paradise Lost, but I guess they wanted to make sure audiences knew that the movie revolved around the Columbian drug lord.

The film is based on a true story, and Benicio Del Toro plays Pablo Escobar. The film follows a young Irish surfer named Nick (Josh Hutcherson), who visits his brother in Colombia. While on his little surfing vacation, he unexpectedly falls in love with Escobar's niece, which doesn’t seem like the best idea.

The movie was directed by Andrea Di Stefano (Life of Pi screenwriter), and it has been getting great reviews. Apparently, Del Toro has given an incredible performance. Here’s a detailed synopsis:

More than twenty years after his death in 1993, Pablo Escobar’s impact on Colombia is still impossible to measure. His cocaine trafficking empire made...

Certainly Josh Hutcherson's character understand this in "Escobar: Paradise Lost" —a new trailer for the drama has arrived today. Benicio Del Toro talks Escobar
Josh Hutcherson
Actor discusses his portrayal of the Colombian drug lord alongside Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson at Zurich Film Festival.

Benicio del Toro has said that he tried to capture the contradiction in Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar while portraying him in thriller Escobar: Paradise Lost:

“The film is clear. Escobar had two faces. He was a family man. He seduced a whole country but at the same time he brings it down. That was Pablo. He became a Robin Hood who also bled the country out.”

Speaking at a Zurich Film Festival press conference, the Che star said he had mixed feelings about the infamous Escobar:

“I have pity for him. I don’t like what he did. He was a talented man who wasted his talnet. But he brought a lot of suffering to a lot of people. He isn’t someone to emulate.”

Del Toro stars alongside Josh Hutcherson and Claudia Traisac in the...

Jennifer Lawrence in Hunger Games (2012)
So Josh Hutcherson’s Escobar: Paradise Lost Character Is Just Peeta, Basically
Jennifer Lawrence in Hunger Games (2012)
In Escobar: Paradise Lost, the debut film from Italian actor Andrea Distefano, Benicio del Toro stands out as Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. Despite the title, the movie gives more attention to the unwitting protagonist caught in Escobar’s crosshairs: a young Canadian surfer named Nick (played by The Hunger Games’ Josh Hutcherson), who falls in love with the dangerous cocaine king’s niece (newcomer Claudia Traisac). On the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival, Distefano director told Vulture that he cast Hutcherson before The Hunger Games had turned him into a global teen heartthrob, but you’d be forgiven for thinking that Hutcherson was chosen to play Nick on the strength of the actor’s portrayal of District 12’s resident nice guy, Peeta, because the two characters might as well be twins. Here are eight ways they are the same:1. Love is the root of all his problems.

Escobar: Paradise Lost Review | Tiff 2014
Did you know Pablo Escobar was a bad guy? It’s true! He was a powerful, charismatic drug lord who won the love of the people with charitable acts, but he was also a ruthless murderer because that comes with the job description. Andrea Di Stefano’s Escobar: Paradise Lost is painfully predictable as it latches onto Escobar’s reputation to tell a bland, generic thriller that wastes the talent of its lead actors. Di Stefano does flirt with the notion of turning a blind eye to evil, but it’s buried in unbearable melodrama and pretentious religious imagery coupled with a slightly racist undertone of how a first-world guy could get caught up in third-world problems. As for Escobar, we learn he had an odd sense of fashion. Nick (Josh Hutcherson) is a surfer living in Columbia in the late 1980s, and he ends up falling for Maria (Claudia Traisac...
