Even tantalizing glimpses of 20th-century Anglo-Irish modernist Eileen Gray’s most iconic designs, including scenes shot in the seminal E-1027, a seaside villa she built for her former lover Jean Badovici on France’s Côte d’Azur, fail to compensate for the rest of the treacle comprising “The Price of Desire.” Essentially a recounting of how envious Swiss architect Le Corbusier effectively undermined Gray’s artistry and for many years obscured her place in the design pantheon, this tedious 2014 production from Irish multi-hyphenate Mary McGuckian (“Man on the Train”) receives a belated digital and on-demand release via Giant Pictures on June 2.
Gray’s remarkable life, talent and legacy receives more inspiring treatment in “Gray Matters,” a companion documentary helmed at the same time by Marco Antonio Orsini, available on iTunes.

Kevin Costner came into the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday for the world premiere of his powerful new drama, Black And White, a stirring story dealing with our racial divide, but mostly a riveting human tale from writer/director Mike Binder. It’s unflinchingly honest and contains a crackerjack courtroom scene that’s priceless. In that scene, Costner delivers perhaps the best performance of his career, or at least since the period of his career circa Field Of Dreams. It played to a packed house yesterday at Roy Thomson Hall and won a strong ovation from the crowd.
Costner told me that even the though the hard-hitting film is not a comedy, the audience responded with laughs in just the right places and really seemed to be moved by what they saw on screen.

Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs John Michael McDonagh's The Guard, reportedly the most successful independently made Irish production ever, won four top prizes at the 2012 Irish Film and Television Awards, held this evening in Dublin. The story of a tough, cynical, hard-drinking cop who goes after three drug dealers, McDonagh's comedy thriller won awards for Best Irish Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay (also McDonagh), and Best Supporting Actress for Fionnula Flanagan — who also happened to be the recipient of the Irish Film and Television Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award. Additionally, the London-born McDonagh received the Irish Film Board Rising Star Award. [List of Irish Film and Television Drama winners.] The Guard's star, Brendan Gleeson, lost the Best Actor Award to Shame's Michael Fassbender, who, in the United States, was recently bypassed by both the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Academy Awards. In the New York-set, mostly British-made Shame, the German-Irish Fassbender plays a man deeply troubled by a very,...

Meryl Streep thanked "everybody in England" for allowing her to come and "trample all over their history" as she picked up her Golden Globe award for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher.
The Oscar-winning actress spoke of the "thrill" of winning the prize for best actress (drama) after playing Baroness Thatcher in the film The Iron Lady.
"This is such a thrill but really, really embarrassing in a year that saw so many extraordinary performances by women in leading roles - by my friends, by people I do not know, by people that I am so inspired by," she said in her acceptance speech.
The 62-year-old, who received her award from British actor Colin Firth, remembered during her speech that she did not have her glasses with her and would have to give her speech from memory.
"Oh, I am going to have to remember my speech!" she said. She added:...

When it comes to the Oscar for Best Original Song your guess is as good as mine. The Academy announced 39 songs vying for the category at the 2012 Oscars back in mid-December and of those 39 I have thrown a dart at the board and come up with five songs I felt may have a shot at the nomination. If I was to look for any kind of indicators from the awards handed out so far I would say "Hello Hello" from Gnomeo and Juliet and "The Living Proof" from The Help sure look like solid contenders as both were nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press and the Broadcast Film Critics, but neither of them ended up winning. At the Globes it was Madonna winning for "Masterpiece", which isn't even eligible for a nomination at the Oscars, and at the Critics Choice it was "Life's a Happy Song" from The Muppets, a...

The 69th Annual Golden Globes may have begun as a story about unleashing the risqué Ricky Gervais on the industry for his third and final time as host, but the narrative ended with more of the same this dull awards season. The Globes’ split categories predictably anointed presumed “best pictures” The Descendants and The Artist, the only two horses to bet on for Oscar glory in six weeks. As the returning host said truthfully, “It’s just like the Oscars, without the esteem.”
Earlier: Ricky Gervais toothless after all that talk
The Hollywood Foreign Press’ reputation for fawning over high-profile celebs and, allegedly, accepting under-the-table encouragement also loomed large Sunday night as both films solidified their front-runner status in the spotlight.
Johnny Depp, last year’s inexplicable double-nominee, emerged early then disappeared, though not before playing the good sport about The Tourist (again) and unofficially passing the torch to George Clooney,...

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association presented the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards last night and there were a few surprises, not least how tame controversial comedian Ricky Gervais was in hosting. More on that later but for now the results are important (although are they, really? – Isn’t this the 6th cousin to the Oscars who the Oscars barely recognise and like a disgruntled relation has to contend with once a year?) and the two big winners were Alexander Payne’s The Descendants and Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist with two major awards each.
George Clooney won Best Actor Drama for The Descendants, which also won Best Motion Picture Drama above critics darling The Help, but a lot of pundits were expecting this going in. The Help, because of it’s civil rights story, was thought to be a tough sell to this crowd and is still likely to be the...

I was actually beginning to believe Cliff Martinez's score for Drive may actually have a shot with all the love it has received in the precursor awards, but last night the Academy announced the list of 97 scores eligible for Best Original Score at the 2012 Oscars and, oops, what do you know, both Drive and Attack the Block didn't make the cut. The only other score I had on my current list of predictions for the category to not make the cut was Howard Shore's music for David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method. Why? Well, I would assume somewhere inside there the rules for requirement weren't met. As per the Academy, "To be eligible, the original score must be a substantial body of music that serves as original dramatic underscoring, and must be written specifically for the motion picture by the submitting composer. Scores diluted by the use of...

Yesterday the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences released the 97 original film scores that will running for the final five nominations for the Best Original Score category at the upcoming 84h Academy Awards. Billy Crystal will be hosting the annual awards show, which be presented on February 26, 2012. Some how I am not surprised that Attack the Block got nixed, seeing that Tron: Legacy pretty much got the same treatment last year. Glad to see that Henry Jackman’s X-Men: First Class is getting a nod, and of course Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross had to be in it. Check out the full list below.

The International Press Academy handed out its 16th annual Satellite Awards last night. While The Descendants may have won the Best Motion Picture and Adapted Screenplay, it was Drive that was the biggest winner of all. The ambient indie took home four awards, including the Best Actor trophy for Ryan Gosling and Best Director for Nicolas Winding Refn. Elsewhere, awards-season frontrunner The Artist turned in a relatively modest performance with only one award for Best Art Direction & Production Design. See the full list below.

hollywoodnews.com: “The Descendants” and “Drive” sped away with the most wins at the Satellite Awards Sunday night, including Best Picture for Alexander Payne’s bittersweet drama and Best Director for Nicolas Winding Refn.
“Drive” actually topped “Descendants” on the evening, claiming four trophies including Best Actor for Ryan Gosling and Best Supporting Actor for Albert Brooks.
Elsewhere, Viola Davis won Best Actress honors for her role as a Southern housemaid in “The Help,” while Jessica Chastain (who appears alongside Davis in Tate Taylor’s drama) took home Best Supporting Actress honors for her work in Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life.” At this stage of the race, it appears like Chastain’s the one to beat in the Best Supporting Actress race … so long as voters can come to a consensus on which performance they’d like to honor.

Angelina Jolie and musicians Madonna and Elton John are celebrating after their works were recognised by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards following the release of the full list of nominations.
The main list of motion picture nominees were announced during a live telecast in America on Thursday morning - and released by WENN - but a complete list put out by officials at the HFPA has since been made available.
Jolie's directorial debut In The Land of Blood and Honey is up for Best Foreign Language Film, and Madonna and Elton John will go head-to-head in the Best Original Song category - for their work in W.E. and Gnomeo & Juliet respectively - alongside Mary J. Blige (The Help), Chris Cornell (Machine Gun Preacher) and collaborators Brian Byrne and Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs).
Silent film The Artist is the outright nominations leader with six nods, including Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical), Best Screenplay, Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius) and Best Performance By An Actor in the Comedy Or Musical category (Jean Dujardin).
The Help and George Clooney's The Descendants have four nominations apiece.
Meanwhile, in the TV categories, British drama Downtown Abbey and Kate Winslet's miniseries Mildred Pierce both picked up four nominations, while acclaimed Us series Boardwalk Empire, Homeland, comedy Modern Family, The Hour and Too Big To Fail all landed three nods.
The 69th annual Golden Globe Awards will be hosted by comic Ricky Gervais on 15 January in Los Angeles.

Here they are... the first major movie and TV award nominations of 2011. The Golden Globes has always been a solid representation of what we might see for the Oscar nominations. The winners end up being a little different though. There are a few surprises on the list that I didn't expect to like Hugo, The Ides of March and War Horse being nominated for best picture. I just didn't think these films would get that big of a nomination. It is good to see that Rooney Mara got a nomination of best actress from her role in The Girl With the Drgon Tattoo, and Ryan Gosling for Best actor in the Ides of March. I'm not sure if they will win or not, but it's good to see them get a nomination. There were really a lot of fantastically great movies this year and it looks like it's going to be a fun reward season.

Want to know who’s up for a gong at this year’s Golden Globe Awards? Here’s the full list of 2011’s nominations…
A nod of recognition. A slap on the back for a job well done. We all like to get them from time to time, and the Golden Globes are but one of the American film industry’s annual celebrations of filmmaking greatness.
And while it’s not always the very best films that get the praise they deserve, it’s refreshing to see some of the nominations for this year’s Golden Globes straying somewhat outside the obvious. Brendan Gleeson is more than deserving of a nod for his sterling performance in The Guard for example, but we didn’t necessarily expect him to get the nomination he did here.
It’s also great to see Rango get a nomination for best animated film, too – if...

Who'd have thought a silent movie would lead the nominations for a Golden Globe in 2011? But sure enough, PG-13 The Artist tops the pack with six nods including Best Comedy.* Also up for that award is Bridesmaids, 50/50, My Week with Marilyn and Midnight in Paris.
Best Drama is filled with family-friendly films: The Help, which is tied for second in total nominations with five, as we as Hugo, War Horse, Moneyball as well as Rated R entries The Ides of March and The Descendants.
Also interesting is that George Clooney raked in the nominations: Best Actor for The Descendants, Best Director and Best Screenplay for his movie The Ides of March. If you include that both those movies are also nominated for Best Drama, Clooney has five nominations. (The Descendants alone has five nominations as well).

The 69th Annual Golden Globe Award nominations were announced this morning from Beverly Hills, and once again it looks like Michel Hazanavicius' silent film The Artist is leading the way with a total of six nominations in the film categories, followed closely by The Descendants and The Help with five each. As always, there is some debate over what belongs in the Comedy or Musical category with My Week with Marilyn somehow sneaking in there, and they decided to go with 6 nominees in the Drama category, seemingly just so Steven Spielberg's War Horse wouldn't be left out. Speaking of Spielberg, I think one of the more interesting nominations is The Adventures of Tintin in Best Animated Film category considering that it was done with performance capture. Monster House was nominated back in 2006, but with Pixar's entry being pretty weak this year, it could be the first time a...

Earlier this evening, I had the pleasure of spending some time at a reception in Hollywood with the folks from the film Albert Nobbs, including stars Glenn Close (who, along withJohn Banville, co-adapted the script from a short story), Janet McTeer (who just this week began working with Close on the TV series Damages), and Mia Wasikowska (who was also magnificent this year in Jane Eyre and Restless); director Rodrigo Garcia (who twice previously directed Close and gave Wasikowska her big break by casting her on the recently canceled HBO show In Treatment); and composer Brian Byrne (who became involved with the project in his native Ireland).

Exclusive Glenn Close could lose the Best Actress Oscar to Meryl Streep or Viola Davis and still leave the Kodak Theater with a shiny golden statuette next Feb. 26. And if she does, she'll be able to thank Brian Byrne, Sinead O'Connor, Skype and a confounding, makeshift recording process that linked her home in Maine with a kitchen in Ireland and a recording studio in Bulgaria. That unusual, cobbled-together setup was required to produce the song "Lay Your Head Down." The gentle and evocative ballad, co-written by Close and Bryne, concludes the film...

Brian Byrne is scoring the upcoming drama Albert Nobbs. The movie stars Glenn Close as a woman who must pass as a man to survive life in 19th century Ireland. Close also co-wrote the script based on a short story by Irish author George Moore and makes her feature producing debut on the project. Mia Wasikowska, Aaron Johnson, Janet McTeer, Brendan Gleeson and Jonathan Rhys Meyers are co-starring. The film is directed by Rodrigo Garcia who has worked with composer Edward Shearmur on most of his previous features, including Mother and Child and Passengers. No release date has been set yet for the film, but it is expected to come out later this year.
Byrne is an up-and-coming Irish composer who has been working both on American and European projects over the last couple of years. To find out more about Byrne and listen to samples of his work, check out his official webpage.

Earlier in the week, some news and images surfaced that told us that Justin Bieber had gotten a tattoo. As a part of his 16th birthday celebration at the beginning of March, Bieber went to Son of a Gun Tattoo and Barbershop in Toronto with his dad in tow to get an impression of Jonathan Livingston Seagull (a tattoo also possessed by Bieber's dad and his uncle) on his hip. On Tuesday (May 18), MTV News caught up with Son of a Gun co-owner Brian Byrne, who laid out the narrative of the event. It's a great story that inspired us to graft other celebrity tattoos on him.
But the name "Brian Byrne" stuck out and seemed awfully familiar. Then it became clear: Byrne is a rock star himself, having fronted Canadian psychedelic rockers I Mother Earth around the turn of the century. The band first formed in 1991 and had several major hits in Canada,...

The co-owner of a tattoo parlour has confirmed that Justin Bieber recently got a tattoo. Photos of Bieber sporting a tattoo of a bird on his hip have recently surfaced on the web. Brian Byrne, who co-owns Toronto's Son of a Gun Tattoo and Barbershop, revealed to MTV that the popstar did indeed come into his shop to get the ink. "It was back in March, March 4th or 5th. The guy who tattooed him, Charlie, is a lifelong friend of Jeremy's, Justin's dad - they're all from Stratford," Byrne said. Hollywoodnews.com: There are various rites of manhood.
Some fathers like to take their sons for a spin at the brothel. Other fathers share a beer with them, while a whole other subset take their male spawn to the shooting range.
Jeremy Bieber, father of Justin, took his pop singer son to get a tattoo when he clocked 16 back in March, outside the U.S. of course. Recent photos surfaced on the internet of Bieber receiving a tattoo according to MTV news – and it’s on his hip (of all the crazy sensitive places to get one. Oi vey)

MTV got down and dirty and literally got Brian Byrne, co-owner of Son of a Gun Tattoo and Barbershop in Toronto where Bieber was bronzed, on...

The "bird in flight" symbol is a popular one among Bieber men. Brian Byrne, co-owner of Son of a Gun Tattoo in Toronto told MTV: "It was back in March, March 4th or 5th" Byrne said. "The guy who tattooed him, Charlie, is a lifelong friend of Jeremy's, Justin's dad -- they're all from Stratford. When it came up, he called Charlie and asked if he could do it and keep it quiet.
