Lizzo will serenade Saturday Night Live through its last performance of 2022, with the Grammy-winning performer replacing scheduled musical guests the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for the NBC show’s Dec. 17 episode.
The swap was revealed during the Dec. 10 episode along with a message from the alternative rock band on Instagram, pointing to an ongoing health issue for their guitarist.
“As many of our fans know, Nick [Zinner] has been sick with pneumonia the past month and it’s been an up and down recovery process,” the musical group wrote. “The band’s top priority is supporting Nick through a full recovery. As a result we had to pull out from our engagements at Kroq’s Acoustic Christmas and Saturday Night Live.”

Picture the 1970s in your head, and chances are a Mick Rock image has come to mind. David Bowie managing to be the sexiest man alive despite a red mullet, a business suit and a saxophone? That’s Mick Rock. Topless Iggy Pop bending over backwards in a moment of rock ’n’ roll abandonment? Mick Rock. Debbie Harry looking like the girl next door (if you live next door to CBGBs circa 1974)? That too was done by certain Mr Michael David Rock. Yes, Rock is his real last name.
With that sort of pedigree, ‘Shot! The Psycho-Spiritual Mantra of Rock’, a new documentary on Rock’s life, would have probably got four stars if it had just been a few of those pictures on the big screen alongside a few anecdotes about doing drugs with David Bowie. However, director Barney Clay (husband of Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs...

From ages 9-17 I went to a school that required a uniform, so I, without protest, donned an ill-fitting button-down every day. I was quiet in the hallways, raised my hand before asking questions, and dutifully adhered to all traffic signs. From the outside I had all the markings of your run of the mill Shy Teen Girl.
But as soon I got home from school I’d sprint to my bedroom and turn on Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Or Arctic Monkeys. Or Taylor Swift. And still dressed in that same button-down I’d sing (shout) the lyrics, jumping around that blue room with all my idols, joyfully exhausting myself. I’d stop, catch my breath for a moment, then reload the music video and start the ritual all over again. My favorite line to belt was from Yyy’s “Cheated Hearts.” I’d turn the volume all the way up...

Beyoncé's Lemonade dropped over the weekend, and the first thing that most of its listeners noticed was that it seems to paint a not-stellar picture of Bey and Jay Z's marriage. At least one celebrity has already been caught up in the firestorm: Rachel Roy, who's the rumored focus of the line "He better call Becky with the good hair" in the album's fourth track, "Sorry." But there's a lot more to unpack with Lemonade, so let's go track-by-track and do this, shall we? (And if you're looking to stream along, you're out of luck unless you have a Tidal account,...

Is it okay for a critic to say, “I respect this work of art, and I am not fully qualified to speak to the profundity of the text?” Because that’s where I find myself with Beyonce’s Lemonade, a remarkable visual album that she released under a cloak of complete secrecy last night. HBO made the one-hour program available twice on their channel during their free-preview-weekend, and it was also available for 24 hours via HBO Now, the app that I have. I don’t have cable, and I don’t like cable. I want the right to consume things a la carte, and anything I can do to support that media model, I do. I will pay providers for content, but I want to do it the way I want to do it. Because it was on HBO Now, I’ve been able to watch the film repeatedly, stopping it,...

Is Scarlett Johansson‘s A.I. character in Spike Jonze‘s Oscar-winning drama “Her” based on the director’s ex-girlfriend, Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O? That’s one intriguing fan theory proposed on Reddit that is gaining traction among the site’s community of film fans. Jonze was married to fellow director Sofia Coppola from 1999 to 2003, and Coppola clearly based Giovanni Ribisi‘s character in “Lost in Translation” on her perception of Jonze, which may explain where he got the idea. After Jonze and Coppola divorced in 2003, he began dating Karen O, who was nine years his junior and just beginning to take off.

By 2005, Interpol was quite the known entity within New York's downtown rock revival, which had emerged in the mainstream a couple years earlier. The consummate downtown tastemaker, David Bowie kept up with many of these bands, as well as the burgeoning indie-rock scene in Brooklyn and beyond. From the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to LCD Soundsystem to Arcade Fire to TV on the Radio, "artists co-signed by Bowie early on" is a small but significant class of '00s acts. At their second Hammerstein Ballroom show in 2005, Interpol became one of those "Bowie bands," after the legend magically materialized outside their dressing room before the gig. Interpol singer Paul Banks recalls the occasion to us — or at least what he remembers of it ("If it was before ’06, there’s a good chance that I’m not going to remember," he says) — and the confidence boost it afforded the band,...

It’s reassuring that even after spending a large chunk of 2015 making radio-ready pop music with the likes of Justin Bieber, Skrillex can still throw down a set of bone-rattling bass music when the situation calls for it.

Mixing grating bass wobbles with saccharine melodies and borderline chipmunk-esque vocals in the style that Skrillex is known for, the performance succeeded in energizing the thousands-deep crowd in attendance on the evening he played.

Women rarely make it into the main rock categories at the Grammys, but this year, the two solo female and women-led groups that managed to squeeze in to two categories took home the honors. St. Vincent's self-titled album scored the Best Alternative Album win, and Hayley Williams-led Paramore earned Best Rock Song for "Ain't It Fun." "St. Vincent" was up against Alt-j, Arcade Fire, Cage the Elephant and Jack White; and Paramore was up against songs from Ryan Adams, The Black Keys, Beck and White. Frequent listeners of the Sound On Sight podcast would have heard me discuss my day job working with kids. For the unfamiliar, I am the director of a community center, and the coordinator of a summer camp here in Montreal. At the start of the summer, I was talking to my kids about music and I discovered that none of them knew what a mix tape was, much less an audio cassette – so, I decided it would be a good idea to make them some complications. Of course, I’m not recording these on actual cassettes, but nevertheless, they get the idea. As it turns out, the kids love it, and now that the storyline in Guardians of the Galaxy revolves around a mix tape, they keep asking me to make more. Here’s the most recent compilation I’ve produced following Making Time. This one is simply titled, Awesome Mix Tape Vol.

R.I.P. Emmy-winning television pioneer and comedy legend Sid Caesar died Wednesday at his home in Beverly Hills. He was 91. Caesar was one of the most beloved entertainers in America during the '50s and one of TV's first true superstars thanks to the success of his 90-minute sketch comedy/variety program Your Show of Shows, which eschewed the vaudeville-influenced slapstick comedy of the day for absurdist sketches containing characters and situations. Legendary actor, comedian and producer Carl Reiner praised his good friend, calling him the "greatest sketch comedian-monologist that television ever produced" in an interview with Knx-am in Los Angeles, via Variety.

Oscar voting kicks off on Friday, and Warner Bros. really want that Best Song trophy. With "The Moon Song" Ep hitting digital outlets this week, and Karen O playing an Oscar nominees party, the awareness campaign for the song continues. Today, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman, director Spike Jonze and production designer Kk Barrett stopped by Kcrw's famed "Morning Becomes Eclectic" and wouldn't you know it, the trio performed a rendition of "The Moon Song." Jonze and Barrett provide the musical accompaniment and backing vocals, while Karen O leads things by singing the tune. And it's good practice for the performer who will have her biggest audience yet when she gets on stage at the Dolby Theater in a couple of weeks to sing it live during the Oscar ceremonies. Until then, watch Jonze, Barrett and uh, O, play the song below. [Pitchfork/The Wrap]...

Having started his directing career overseeing pop videos, it's clear that music is still an integral part of how Spike Jonze works as a film director. From Christopher Walken boogieing to Fatboy Slim's 'Weapon of Choice' to Greta Gerwig's carefree dance to Arcade Fire's 'Afterlife' at the recent YouTube music awards, Jonze is an expert at intertwining sound and image.

This morning Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O earned her first-ever Oscar nomination for "Moon Song," the tune she penned for Spike Jonze's acclaimed film Her. Needless to say, she was shocked. "Holy smokes. I had zero clue! To say this was unexpected is an understatement," she tells Rolling Stone. "It's wild because 'The Moon Song' was written and recorded in the most humble of circumstances; at my dining room table, a few paces away from the couch I read the script for Her for the first time."
