If I’ve learned anything from Trick ‘r Treat, it’s that you don’t disrespect Halloween. “I hate Halloween,” says Emma (Leslie Bibb) in the opening scene. She blows out the lone jack o’lantern and whines to her husband Henry (Tahmoh Penikett) about taking down the decorations on Halloween night. Moments later, she gets her comeuppance and becomes bloody and artsy décor on the front lawn. Her head is chopped off and her limbs hung with rope in the trees, a pumpkin lollipop shoved into her gaping mouth. Sam might be tiny, but he suffers no fools when it comes to the beloved holiday. It’s a gnarly image that drives home the film’s central theme: Halloween is sacred and should be treated as such.

Carol’s Second Act has flatlined: CBS has cancelled the Patricia Heaton-led medical comedy after one season, TVLine has learned.
Through its 18-episode freshman rotation, Carol’s Second Act averaged a 0.63 demo rating and 5 million total viewers (in Live+Same Day numbers), down 25 and 17 percent from what CBS’ Murphy Brown revival did in the time slot the season prior. Among the eight sitcoms CBS has aired this season, it ranks a distant last in both measures.

We're ready to round out today's entertainment news.
We have news about a TV series reboot, a movie franchise to television project, and a whole lot more.
Let's dig in!
First up, it appears Greg Berlanti has no desire to slow down.
He's getting back into business with ABC with Riverdale creator Ricardo Aguirre-Sacasa, the latter of which is working on getting as prolific with Berlanti.
They're developing a new series based on the Brides of Dracula called "The Brides."
Interestingly, this isn't the first time a Brides of Dracula-based series has been considered, and it's not even the first time This series has been on the table.
Described by ABC as a vampire soap about empowered, immortal women and the things they do to maintain wealth, prestige, legacy -- and their nontraditional family, a show with the same logline was offered to NBC five years ago.
While that didn't go forward,...

Exclusive: We’ll be seeing more of Nurse Dennis on CBS’ comedy Carol’s Second Act. Cedric Yarbrough, who has recurred as the character since the series’ launch, has been promoted to series regular.
Yarbrough’s Nurse Dennis is a hospital veteran who runs the town, and has little patience for nonsense from interns. Though he’s described as generally dry, he does have a mischievous side and isn’t above holding a grudge.
Carol’s Second Act, starring Patricia Heaton, hails from Trophy Wife creators Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins, Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, Heaton and David Hunt’s FourBoys Entertainment and CBS TV Studios. Written by Halpern and Haskins, it centers on Carol Chambers (Heaton), who after raising her two children and retiring from teaching, embarks on a unique second act: she’s going to become a doctor.
In addition to Heaton, the series stars Kyle MacLachlan as Dr.

CBS has ordered additional episodes of all five of its freshman series. Drama Evil, which was designed to produce 13-episode seasons, has been renewed for a second season to premiere in 2020-2021. New drama All Rise and comedies Carol’s Second Act, The Unicorn and Bob ♥ Abishola all have received back orders for the 2019-2020 broadcast season.
Per usual, CBS calls them full-season orders, though I hear at least some are partial ones. Like all Chuck Lorre-CBS series, Bob ♥ Abishola is believed to have received a Back 9 pickup; the orders for the others are about five episode each, I hear.
While none has been a breakout hit, CBS’ freshman series have been solid performers in total viewers by this fall’s ratings standards.
Boosted by a delayed viewing bump, Evil, created by Michelle and Robert King, is averaging more than 7.1 million viewers in Nielsen Live+7. The thriller drama will...

Everybody Loves Raymond‘s Patricia Heaton returned to CBS on Thursday night with the series premiere of Carol’s Second Act.
The two-time Emmy winner plays Carol Kenney, a retired high-school science teacher who pursues her dream of becoming a doctor at age 50. We meet her when she introduces herself to the other interns — Daniel Kutcher (Baby Daddy‘s Jean-Luc Bilodeau), Lexie Gilani (Baroness Von Sketch Show‘s Sabrina Jalees) and Caleb Summers (Raising Hope‘s Lucas Neff) — all of whom assume that she’s their supervisor because she’s “old.” She then gets off on the wrong foot with...

“Carol’s Second Act” is aiming to be Patricia Heaton’s third, a defining hit series for a performer who’s previously had defining roles in “Everybody Loves Raymond” and “The Middle.” But compared to those shows, built around families whose dynamic informed the shows’ stories, this sitcom has an awful lot of situation. We meet Carol, a medical resident, at the same time her cohort does; they assume, because of her age, that she’s their supervisor, and are instead frustrated and baffled by Carol’s eager, uncynical attitude.
A retired science teacher rebooting her life after a divorce, Carol is sunny and eager to what her younger peers would consider a fault. The actual chief resident (Ito Aghayere) seems burdened by an underling with so much more verve than decorum, while a distinguished doctor around Carol’s own age finds her pleasantly refreshing. Refreshing, too, is the fact...

After nine seasons on The Middle and Everybody Loves Raymond, Patricia Heaton was asked whether she was looking forward to another nine season run on CBS comedy Carol’s Second Act.
“My perfect scenario, as I see death getting near, is that I’d die on a sound stage, that’s how I want to go. Just as long as I’ve had full hair and make-up,” she jokes.
Heaton was front and center of the show’s TCA summer press tour panel, joking alongside creators Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins and co-stars Kyle MacLachlan, Ito Aghayere, Jean-Luc Bilodeau, Sabrina Jalees and Ashley Tisdale.
The show, which is produced by CBS TV Studios in association with Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and Heaton and David Hunt’s FourBoys Entertainment, is based around Carol Chambers (Heaton), who after raising her two children and retiring from teaching, embarks on a unique second...

CBS has picked up three dramas and four comedies for the 2019-2020 season.
The dramas are “Evil” from Robert and Michelle King, the spinoff “FBI: Most Wanted,” and the legal drama “All Rise,” formerly known as “Courthouse.” The comedies are the multi-cams “Broke,” “Carol’s Second Act,” and “Bob Hearts Abishola” and the single-cam “The Unicorn.”
Interestingly, two former stars of the now canceled Marvel-Netflix series “Luke Cage” will appear in CBS’ new shows, albeit on different series. Mike Colter will star in “Evil” while Simone Missick will star in “All Rise.” Another Marvel-Netflix alum, Wilson Bethel, will star in “All Rise” with Missick. CBS has ordered seven pilots to series for the 2019-20 season ahead of its upfront presentation to advertisers next week. The seven series are made up of four comedies and three dramas.
Among the comedies ordered at the broadcast network are Chuck Lorre’s “Bob Hearts Abishola,” Patricia Heaton’s “Carol’s Second Act” and “Broke” from “Jane the Virgin” creator Jennie Snyder Urman. The Peyton Reed-produced “The Unicorn” with Walton Goggins and Rob Corddry was also picked up.
Heaton starred on CBS’ “Everybody Loves Raymond” and “Broke” will see “NCIS” star Pauley Perrette return to the network. The pickups will maintain Lorre’s — who already has “Mom” and “Young Sheldon” coming back next season — strong relationship with the network, after “The Big Bang Theory” says farewell next week.

A quartet of comedy pilots just landed a spot on CBS’ schedule for the 2019-20 season. The Eye Network has ordered to series Bob Abishola, Broke, Carol’s Second Act and The Unicorn, TVLine has learned.

Hailing from Ep Chuck Lorre, Bob Abishola (or Bob Hearts Abishola, for the emoji-averse) stars Mike & Molly‘s Billy Gardell as a middle-aged sock businessman from Detroit who suffers a heart attack. Baby Daddy star Jean-Luc Bilodeau can tackle any challenge with a smile.
Even after being rushed to the hospital last October when his Halloween costume caught on fire, the actor posted a photo of himself giving a thumbs-up from the emergency room.
"I'd say it was a good night," he captioned a Snapchat photo of himself in the hospital at the time.
But "it was frightening and life-changing," Bilodeau, 25, says in the current issue of People about the burns he suffered on his arms and legs.
Still, the incident did not delay production on the fifth season of his hit Freeform sitcom.
