Dwayne Johnson, Joe Ballarini Get ‘Ripped’ for 20th Century Studios (Exclusive)
Image
In a pre-emptive purchase, 20th Century Studios has muscled in on the rights to Ripped, a short story by Joe Ballarini for an adaptation to be produced by Seven Bucks and 12:01 Films.

Seven Bucks’ Dany Garcia, Dwayne Johnson, and Hiram Garcia, as well as 12:01’s Scott Glassgold are the gym rats, um, producers, on this one.

While Johnson is not currently attached to star in Ripped, there does seem to be a character for which he could go beast mode. The logline concerns an insecure man who, in anticipation of his wedding day, enters a hardcore underground training facility led by a magnetic fitness guru, who commands cult like devotion with the promise of peak performance at any cost.

Ballarini is set to adapt his short story. Separately, the writer has landed a deal with Simon & Schuster/Atria new horror imprint 12:01 Books to expand the short story into a novel.

Disney Near Deal For Hawaii-Set Crime Pic With Scorsese, Dwayne Johnson, DiCaprio & Emily Blunt: The Dish
Image
Exclusive: One of the biggest pic packages is about to land at Disney, Deadline hears.

This is the pitch for a Martin Scorsese-directed drama that would star Dwayne Johnson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt. The thumbnail description: Imagine Robert De Niro’s Jimmy the Gent character from Goodfellas but as a ruthless Hawaiian crime boss, also based on a real figure, who battled encroaching rivals for control of organized crime on the islands.

Deadline broke the project in February. It is a pricey package given the local and above-the-line star power, and numerous distributors were bidding. This being a decidedly adult film, it fits nicely under the 20th Century banner, home to upcoming films including Deliver Me From Nowhere, the Scott Cooper-directed drama about the existential crisis that led Bruce Springsteen to hole up in a room and generate his seminal Nebraska album. The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White plays The Boss,...

Now, there’s another Scorsese / DiCaprio project being pitched, as Deadline reports that Jungle Cruise and Smashing Machine co-stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are attached to star in a Scorsese-directed, Hawaii-set crime drama alongside DiCaprio.

Nick Bilton is set to write the screenplay for the film. Here’s what Deadline has heard about it: Imagine Robert De Niro’s Jimmy the Gent character from Goodfellas, but as a ruthless Hawaiian crime boss, based on a real figure,...

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio Attached to Hawaii-Set Crime Film From Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt
Image
Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are attached to produce a new film based on an original idea from Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.

The Hawaii-set crime caper, which is currently being shopped to studios and streamers, is drawing comparisons in the industry to “The Departed” and “Goodfellas.” Even in spirit, there are no deals in place and the viability of the project depends on a distributor, according to multiple sources familiar with the package, but the untitled drama is set to be written by author and journalist Nick Bilton, who helmed the 2021 HBO documentary “Fake Famous.”

Johnson and Blunt, who previously worked together on “Jungle Cruise,” brought the project to Scorsese and DiCaprio, and once they expressed interest, they all went to Bilton to ask him about writing.

Producers on the forthcoming film include Scorsese, Johnson, Blunt, DiCaprio, Bilton, Dany Garcia, Lisa Frechette and Rick Yorn.

If the filmmakers seem ambitious,...

Martin Scorsese
Leonardo DiCaprio, Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt Eyeing Hawaii-Set Crime Film for Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese is looking to make a splash with a star-studded crime package set in Hawaii.

A new package that hit the town would star Dwayne Johnson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt. Scorsese would direct the feature from a script by journalist and author Nick Bilton.

The fact-based untitled movie is said to be in the mold of Goodfellas and The Departed and center on a mob boss vying for control of the Hawaiian islands in the 1960s and 1970s.

Scorsese, Johnson, Blunt, DiCaprio, Bilton, Dany Garcia, Lisa Frechette and Rick Yorn serve as producers.

Bilton is known for such previous projects as HBO’s The Idol and the Netflix series Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal.

The Hollywood Reporter reported last month that DiCaprio was in talks to star in a Scorsese-directed adaptation of Erik Larson’s best-selling book The Devil in the White City. The pair are known...

Town Says Aloha To A Hawaii-Set ‘Goodfellas’ Meets ‘The Departed:’ Scorsese, DiCaprio, Dwayne Johnson & Emily Blunt Top Crime Drama Package
Image
Exclusive: The hot package in town is a pitch for a Martin Scorsese-directed untitled drama that would star Dwayne Johnson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt.

The thumbnail description: Imagine Robert De Niro’s Jimmy the Gent character from Goodfellas, but as a ruthless Hawaiian crime boss, based on a real figure, who battled encroaching rivals for control of organized crime in Hawaii.

To be written by Nick Bilton, the film focuses on a turbulent time on the island paradise when an aspiring mob boss battled rival crime factions to wrest control of the underworld of the Hawaiian islands. It was a bloody battle, the kind of terrain Scorsese covered in both Goodfellas and The Departed. In 1960s and 70s Hawaii, this formidable and charismatic mob boss rises to build the islands’ most powerful criminal empire, waging a brutal war against mainland corporations and rival syndicates while fighting to preserve his ancestral land.

'This Does Not Look Like $250M': VFX Artists Criticize the CGI of Dwayne Johnson Film 3 Months After Box Office Flop
Image
Red One can't catch a break. The 2024 Christmas action film premiered on Nov. 15 to unfortunate reviews, and it's being criticized again, three months after its release in theaters.

Red One stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Chris Evans in a Christmas action film with a mission to save Christmas. J.K. Simmons takes the role of a very different Santa Claus, and the film earned positive reviews from the audience, despite being critically panned. Unfortunately, it flopped at the box office, and now VFX experts further criticized the film on the YouTube channel Corridor Crew.

YouTuber VFX Artists Corridor Crew Criticize 'Red One's CGI
Image
Red One, the 2024 Christmas blockbuster starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, has already been slayed by almost every critic around. But now it's time for professional VFX artists to take their fair shots at the most expensive movie of last year, as the beloved Corridor Crew have lined up Red One in their CGI crosshairs. Red One starred Johnson as Callum Drift, the head of security at the North Pole, who enlists the help of a professional hacker, Jack O'Malley (Evans), to rescue Santa (J.K. Simmons) when he's kidnapped. The movie was ravaged by critics, currently sitting at 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, but the opinions of VFX artists might be even harsher.

"So this is a $250 million movie, huh?" said Corridor Crew's Niko before being shown the snowmobile chase. "This does not look like $250 million worth of CGI," was his immediate reaction after watching five seconds of the scene. The crew...

Red One Sets New Record on Prime Video ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

In its opening weekend, Red One attracted a record-breaking 50 million worldwide viewers, becoming Amazon MGM Studios’ most-watched film debut ever on Prime Video.

“Given the audience response to Red One both in theaters and on Prime Video, the film will be a perennial holiday favorite for years to come,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios. “Every film is different, and we are so grateful for the partnership with our filmmakers in collectively finding the right strategy to get this film in front of the widest possible audience. With Red One, there was no doubt that strategy needed to include a theatrical release and associated marketing campaign, which drove audiences to theaters and generated awareness for the film with viewers who would ultimately tune in on Prime Video. Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans Christmas Flick ‘Red One’ Becomes the Most-Watched Prime Video Film Debut Ever
Image
As of December 15, 2024, Red One has grossed $92.5 million in the United States and Canada and $83 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $175.5 million.

In the United States and Canada, Red One was projected to gross $30–35 million from 4,032 theaters, with some independent sources predicting a debut as low as $25 million or as high as $40 million. The film made $10.9 million on its first day, including $3.7 million from Sunday and Thursday night previews. It debuted to $32.1 million, topping the box office.

In its second box office weekend, the film dropped 59% to $13.3 million, finishing in third behind newcomers Wicked and Gladiator II.

After a somewhat disappointing box office run, Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’s Christmas flick found its new home on Amazon Prime.

‘Red One’ Becomes Most-Watched Prime Video Film Debut Ever With 50 Million Viewers After Modest Theatrical Run
Image
It’s a December to remember for Prime Video. Per the streamer, the Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans Christmas flick “Red One” attracted a record-breaking 50 million worldwide viewers in its opening weekend on Prime Video (measured over four days), becoming Amazon MGM Studios’ most-watched film debut ever on the streaming platform.

It’s a true Christmas miracle for the film, which boasted a Santa-sized $250 million budget and opened to just $32 million in the U.S. last month. Amazon MGM head of theatrical distribution Kevin Wilson hinted at the studio’s justification for spending big without requiring a lot of ticket sales in return, telling Variety in November, “Whether or not people like it, the value of these movies is different for our business model. … If we can put these movies out theatrically and cover our P&a [print and advertising] costs, why wouldn’t we? We’re getting a massive marketing campaign that’s...

When Dwayne Johnson Defied Hollywood: Refusing To Change His Physique & Name, Becoming An Unstoppable Icon
Image
Dwayne Johnson Refuses Hollywood’s Demands (Photo Credit – Instagram)

In his early Hollywood days, Dwayne Johnson—yes, The Rock—faced an uphill battle. He wasn’t just asked to learn lines and hit his marks; Hollywood wanted him to rewrite himself. Lose weight, stop working out, drop “The Rock,” and never mention wrestling again. The message was clear: fit the mold, or you’re out.

But Johnson didn’t play ball. “I wasn’t gonna conform to Hollywood. Hollywood was gonna conform to me,” he later revealed. That defiance became a game-changer.

Hollywood’s cookie-cutter expectations hit Johnson hard. Studios wanted him to shed the larger-than-life persona he’d built in wrestling and blend into the industry’s leading-man blueprint. To them, “The Rock” was just baggage.

Dwayne Johnson's Red One Gets Good and Bad News Amid Box Office Struggles
Image
Red One has two more achievements to stuff in its stockings this holiday season. However, the Dwayne Johnson-led Christmas blockbuster looks even more unlikely to make back its hefty budget.

Via Collider, Red One made $12.8 million in North American cinemas during Thanksgiving weekend, bringing its domestic total to $76 million. Combine that tally with the $72 million Red One has earned in overseas territories, and the action comedy now stands at $148 million globally, bringing it closer to the $150 million mark. Along with that feat, Red One is now one of the top 25 highest-grossing movies of 2024, nipping The Beekeeper, the film led by Johnson's Hobbs & Shaw co-star Jason Statham, to make the list. These achievements add to a recent career box-office mark Johnson reached thanks to the film.

Writer-producer Chris Morgan was on the set of Hobbs & Shaw when Dwayne Johnson’s right-hand man, Hiram Garcia, started sharing his idea for Red One. Red One Dashes to Major Box Office Milestone, But Faces Tough Sledding to Make a Profit
Image
Red One decks the box-office halls by achieving its first major milestone since its release earlier this month. However, the Dwayne Johnson-led Christmas movie may not receive many more gifts during its theatrical run as it faces stiff competition from new and upcoming blockbusters.

Via Collider, Red One is expected to cross the $100 million mark at the global box office on Nov. 22, with $55 million coming from overseas territories. The news is encouraging considering Red One endured tough sledding with an underwhelming opening weekend in North American cinemas, making $32.1 million over its first three days. The film's early tally also helped Johnson cross the $14 billion mark for his career as he searches for his first major commercial hit since Jumanji: The Next Level in 2019.

As ‘Red One’ Hits Theaters, Seven Bucks Productions Contemplates Life Beyond Dwayne Johnson
Image
The principals of Seven Bucks Productions –Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia – are between The Rock and a hard place.

The 12-year-old film and TV shop was one of the earliest prototypes for a modern production company built around a megastar. These were businesses created to give more control and equity to figures like Johnson and his contemporaries. But as Hollywood struggles with consolidation and a cash crunch, scaling past the big name behind the brand may be essential for their long-term survival.

Some celebrity-backed companies have chosen to move into ancillary businesses beyond the movies and shows that made an actor an A-lister. Witherspoon, for instance, has become more consequential to book publishing than anyone might have predicted when Hello Sunshine launched. And Robbie and her partners at LuckyChap haven’t just made projects for the “Barbie” actress. Guided by great taste, they’ve partnered with cutting-edge creatives...
